ABC recently unveiled a new medical drama, Off the Map, which was created by Jenna Bans and is co-executive produced by Bans, Betsy Beers, and Shondra Rimes. All three ladies have been closely involved with Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Will Off the Map be as successful as these other medical dramas or be cancelled after one season?
Off the Map follows six doctors who move to a tiny town in the South American jungle to help the residents and man an understaffed and under-stocked medical clinic. The cast includes Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
This new TV show debuted on January 12th to a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic (the number that really matters) and 7.57 million total viewers. That was the night of the President’s speech in Tucson which caused some disjointed viewing in some areas. ABC decided to rerun the series premiere on the following night to give it more exposure, displacing Private Practice.

Despite that extra coverage, Off the Map dropped by nearly 9% in the key demo in week two. That’s not bad percentage-wise but the debut number was pretty low to begin with. The series attracted a 2.1 rating in the demo and 5.79 million viewers. Last night’s episode dropped 14% to a 1.8 rating and 5.06 million viewers.
After just three weeks, Off the Map is near the bottom of ABC’s demo rankings of scripted series, tying struggling No Ordinary Family. That’s not good at all and since Off the Map’s ratings haven’t stabilized yet, they may keep falling.
In the past, the alphabet network has renewed one or two struggling freshman series for a second season. Unless the ratings start going up, that looks like Off the Map’s only hope for survival. There are 13 episodes in season one and, for now, the finale is scheduled for April 6th. Time will tell if that ends up being the season or series finale.

Please keep this show. Off the map is the only show in a long time that I really cared to watch! The only thing I would change is air it at 9:00pm instead of 10. I can’t wait until the next season so please please bring it back 🙂

I will boycott ABC if they cancel this show. I LOVE ‘ Off the Map’. Give it a chance, ABC! Show reruns during the Grey’s Anatomy slot during the summer or something. Give it a chance. I’m sorry, but it is 1,000 times better than Grey’s Anatomy and I love that show too. Doctors at a hospital are hot. But doctors in South America are caliente! I’m sorry, but I never saw anyone from Grey’s anatomy save a life by transfusing their blood with coconut milk. And the whole black market and cocaine angle could get really interesting.
Please, please, please keep the show!!! I absolutely love it! Its one of my new favorite shows. It’s different, exciting, always keeps u interested and makes u wonder….. Oh, i will we very very disappointed if its over 🙁 I understand that ratings are important, but what about those 5 million viewers who watch the show?!! 5 million its a very high number, well at least to make another season, or maybe…. many more 🙂

This a very good show and it needs to go on. I think one season to determine isnt enough. This is actually one of the shows i look foward to watching its exciting and fresh and sexy, hot, funny and emotional its everything wrapped into a hour episode, when its over u cant wait for next wednesday to see it again. Please give off the map the chance to get on the MAP.

I love this show!!! I hate that it’s on late, tho as I have to be up every early for work, I have to DVR it, but my husband and I have watched every episode. You can’t keep us hanging…please, please bring it back!!

Please keep this series. I think it was great in season one but has ample potential to have a banging season 2! Please please please. I also agree that the time choice could have been better. Make it at 9 and all those people that dont have DVR can watch it too. Fantastic series, keep it going.
