ABC recently unveiled a new medical drama, Off the Map, which was created by Jenna Bans and is co-executive produced by Bans, Betsy Beers, and Shondra Rimes. All three ladies have been closely involved with Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Will Off the Map be as successful as these other medical dramas or be cancelled after one season?
Off the Map follows six doctors who move to a tiny town in the South American jungle to help the residents and man an understaffed and under-stocked medical clinic. The cast includes Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
This new TV show debuted on January 12th to a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic (the number that really matters) and 7.57 million total viewers. That was the night of the President’s speech in Tucson which caused some disjointed viewing in some areas. ABC decided to rerun the series premiere on the following night to give it more exposure, displacing Private Practice.

Despite that extra coverage, Off the Map dropped by nearly 9% in the key demo in week two. That’s not bad percentage-wise but the debut number was pretty low to begin with. The series attracted a 2.1 rating in the demo and 5.79 million viewers. Last night’s episode dropped 14% to a 1.8 rating and 5.06 million viewers.
After just three weeks, Off the Map is near the bottom of ABC’s demo rankings of scripted series, tying struggling No Ordinary Family. That’s not good at all and since Off the Map’s ratings haven’t stabilized yet, they may keep falling.
In the past, the alphabet network has renewed one or two struggling freshman series for a second season. Unless the ratings start going up, that looks like Off the Map’s only hope for survival. There are 13 episodes in season one and, for now, the finale is scheduled for April 6th. Time will tell if that ends up being the season or series finale.
But, what do you think? Do you like Off the Map? Should it continue or would you just cancel it now?

Please keep the show!!!!!!!!! I love it!!!! i record it every week…If the time would change and come on earlier than 10 pm the ratings and viewers would probably be higher……..GREAT SHOW!!!! BEST ONE IN A LONG TIME!!!! KEEP WRITING IT! PLEASEEEEEE…….
I really like this show and would like to see it continue. It leaves you hanging as far as what is going to happen as far as the heart transplant. I really want to know what is going to happen.
Please keep off the map it is much better than 90% of the other shows that appear in the evening. It may be a doctors show right now but it can turn into much more.
VERY GOOD SHOW KEEP IT PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GOOD STORY LINE AND VERY GOOD ACTORS.!!!!!!!!!
I love this show!!! Peas keep it! It’s awesome!
PLLLEEEAASSSEE keep it. I haven’t been so excited about a serie since ER. Give it more time, there are so many stupid series that shouldn’t be on tv and this is a just a breath of fresh air.
DO NOT CANCEL this show!! I am completely addicted I love this show I think this show is just as good if not better than greys anatomy and greys anatomy is one of my favorites! I know if they give off the map a chance at season 2 everyone will realize that it’s really a great show and you can’t just leave us fans hanging like that and not knowing what’s going to happen!
It’s awesome, they should keep it.
Off The Map is AWESOME! My wife and I look forward to every new episode. The stories that are told are so realistic and the acting is fantastic! I am drawn into the great story telling and back stories of each cast member. It is also very refreshing to see a show that brings you to emotional highs and lows. In the finale I think I tried to break away from crying 3 times (and I don’t think I’m a sissy guy 🙂 In conclusion I would be disappointed in people and viewers in general if they didn’t feel this… Read more »

Please keep the series, I look forward to watching this show every week and have really missed seeing it. It would be a shame to have such a great show cancelled. I hope it can be saved.
It’s a fantastic series, combining fiction and reality. I live in Brazil, in the jungle for the last 25 years, performed and assisted to several medical procedures likewise. It’s a pity it didn’t reach expected audience rates, perhaps for a wrong publicity approach. I’m really sorry.
This is an amazing show, keep it. The plots are great and each show keeps you on the edge of your seat and wanting more when it is over. The time is probably the issue. I use my DVR to record it and in this economy not everyone had the extra money to pay for that additional cable option. Don’t take this show off, give it a second chance and a better time slot.
