After some very lackluster ratings, NBC is shutting down production on Outlaw. Is it the next to be cancelled?
The Outlaw TV show follows the crusades of a Supreme Court Justice (Jimmy Smits) who decides to step down and go back to being a lawyer to fight injustices. The NBC series also stars Carly Pope, David Ramsey, Jesse Bradford, and Ellen Woglom.
Outlaw debuted via a special preview on Wednesday September 15th, following the season finale of America’s Got Talent. The series premiere was reasonably sampled with a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 10.68 million viewers.
In its regular timeslot a week and two days later, episode two attracted only a 1.1 rating in the demo and 4.89 million total viewers. Last Friday, Outlaw garnered only a 1.0 rating and 4.72. Though expectations are lower on Friday nights, this performance is terrible.
NBC has now shut down production of the series while execs mull over how to proceed. They supposedly want to see how the series performs over the next couple weeks but there’s no reason to expect that the numbers will get any better.
Eight episodes of Outlaw have been produced and five haven’t aired yet. While it seems likely that NBC will air them all at some point, it seems even more likely that Outlaw will be cancelled soon.
What do you think? Do you watch Outlaw on NBC? Do you think the show could be saved? What would you change?

Keep this show on the air…What are you going to replace it with another Law and Order? NBC did not give the show a chance…Just like some of the other shows they cancelled Mercy, Trauma, and Lipstick Jungle. What’s going on????
I really like the show – probably because I’m crazy about Jimmy Smits, all the way back to Victor Sifuentes in L.A. Law, then Bobbie Simone in NYPD Blue, then President elect at the end of West Wing. He’s gotten a little heavier and a little older but still retains the charm, the sexiness, and the range of emotions in his acting so that he is a pleasure to watch. Also, the show’s premise – though a bit unrealistic, is still interesting, and the secondary characters are also (though the blonde female lawyer is a little boring – she is… Read more »
I’ve watched all the episodes until tonight. In the first, the liberal writers changed the Arizona law. I ignored that, but tonight when they attacked the “tea party” was the final straw. I’m done with it. I’m glad to know it’ll soon be canceled.
Keep this show on, just move it to another night other than Friday so my 18-49 demographic can be home and not at a new release of a movie or out drinking with their boys
The unimagination of the writers is the reason for this potential demise. Everybody I know likes Jimmy Smits, but he continues to get poor writing as in his last show, making him into a dubious character in Florida. Trying to make him into a philadering former judge and gambler is just bad judgement and very poor writing that says they don’t think Jimmy is up to the task, so they kick start the writing. Give him a decent role, with a decent script and he will do just fine. But you need some writers who are not juvenile delinquents themselves.… Read more »
Please keep this show. My husband and I love it!!!
Daring inside look at Judicial System…this is not just another lawyer story, this deals with their kingpins, the judges. Wonder if the ratings were garnered by agast Judges who feared their solid jobs might be impacted…or that the public might voice concern over who is in those chairs…I find it refreshing, insightful and brave…lot it…It is in competition with other good choices…maybe a change of the time it airs might make it a keeper.
keep it on!!!! it’s getting better each week and i love ellen woglom.
i know who you are…and i agree with YOU…ellen is EXCELLENT!
I can’t stand when a network doesn’t even give a show a chance at one season. If they have committed the air time and the production costs to doing the show it doesn’t make much sense not to keep it at least one season. Maybe announce that the rating haven’t been great and see if the show can rally more viewers before announcing a cancellation.
This show is excellent – there aren’t too many shows that are entertaining anymore – this one is a keeper!!!
love dis show. plz keep it. clever creating of a supreme court justice steppin dwn to help da ppl mor dis show keepz my interest da whole hr. plz keep da camera rollin.
Please keep Outlaw
I think the show is. I like it better than Undercovers-now that show sucks.
I think that TV viewers have lawyer-show fatigue. There are too many similar shows already, and some very good ones with an established viewership. That’s why I didn’t get too excited about this show, even though I like Jimmy Smits. Can’t the TV folks come up with some new ideas for one-hour dramas besides shows with lawyers and/or cops?
The ONLY thing I hate about this show, is Carly Pope’s character…UGH! …in my opinion, her annoying ass is the reason the show’s getting axed!
I couldn’t agree with you more, the show can do without her
