After some very lackluster ratings, NBC is shutting down production on Outlaw. Is it the next to be cancelled?
The Outlaw TV show follows the crusades of a Supreme Court Justice (Jimmy Smits) who decides to step down and go back to being a lawyer to fight injustices. The NBC series also stars Carly Pope, David Ramsey, Jesse Bradford, and Ellen Woglom.
Outlaw debuted via a special preview on Wednesday September 15th, following the season finale of America’s Got Talent. The series premiere was reasonably sampled with a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 10.68 million viewers.
In its regular timeslot a week and two days later, episode two attracted only a 1.1 rating in the demo and 4.89 million total viewers. Last Friday, Outlaw garnered only a 1.0 rating and 4.72. Though expectations are lower on Friday nights, this performance is terrible.
NBC has now shut down production of the series while execs mull over how to proceed. They supposedly want to see how the series performs over the next couple weeks but there’s no reason to expect that the numbers will get any better.
Eight episodes of Outlaw have been produced and five haven’t aired yet. While it seems likely that NBC will air them all at some point, it seems even more likely that Outlaw will be cancelled soon.
What do you think? Do you watch Outlaw on NBC? Do you think the show could be saved? What would you change?

What a shame. This was one of the BEST tv shows on. I do not watch much television and look forward to this show every Friday.
Please give it a chance – – –
How about giving this show a chance? It is an excellent show with wonderful story lines. Give it a better time slot. If I am not mistaken, shows like Seinfeld did not garner top ratings at the beginning but eventually caught on. With the absence of Law & Order it is a perfect replacement. I’ve had enough of silly sitcoms and reality shows. Outlaw is a smart show and will gain a following if given a chance.
Outlaw is one of my favorite new shows. Seeing Jimmy Smits in a new show is great. Of course Tom Selleck is opposite him in Blue Bloods. I love them both and I watch one and tape one every week. The story line about a judge leaving the Supreme Court and being a crusader for justice is great. Portraying him as being addicted to gambling and women so extremely perhaps turns some viewers off. Maybe if the gambling wasn’t so all consuming.
I have truly enjoyed when I heard that there was a chance that this show might be cancelled I was surpised I said Jimmie Smit can’t catch a break his other show on CBS was cancelled. I think might it might be a good idea if you moved the show from Friday. I think the show was great. Maybe the TV exces are not talking to the right people. KEEP THE SHOW PLEASE
I love this show! if it did better on Wednesday put it back onto Wednesdays. I dont know why they dont just give shows a chance. I download on itunes every week i hope they count people who do that in their ratings.
The biggest problem was using America’s Got Talent as its lead in. I would never watch that show. And obviously the people who do, lack the intelligence and deep to watch Outlaw. The people I know that love Outlaw say the same thing. They do NOT watch America’s Got Talent. They should have used a more brain intensive program as Outlaw’s lead in.
P.S. Jimmy Smits is great,too!!
Hi! I think the show should be given a chance;it was hardly aired ;my husband and I really like the unique plot from judge to lawyer-crusader with his own personal addictions.
Fri. eves. are not the best nights to air new shows, also. Can change times?
i love this show. jimmy smits is awesome. it should be givin more of a chance.
If you are reading any of these comments at all you will know that cancelling Outlaw is a big mistake as far as the viewing public is concerned. I always have to tape shows in order that I can enjoy at a later time. Does that mean NBC doesn’t acknowledge those of us who rely on TIVO/DVR’s? Listen to us for a change! Too many good shows are dropped before they even get a chance to take hold! Have the decision makers read these comments and take heed! The majority are saying Wake up NBC you are dropping the ball… Read more »
This is a terrific and envoled series that has a charismatic leading character. Why would you put it opposite Blue Bloods, with Tom Selleck? These shows appeal to the same audience. I do hope you will consider changing Outlaws to a 9:00 p.m. time slot on Saturday, Sunday or Monday. It is especially appealing to middle aged women that do not want to watch football. For goodness sake, please give us an option with a terrific alternative. Please do not give up on Outlaws. It’s an appealing and great show. Please allow it to develop and grow!
This is an excellent show and I agree that it deals with todays issues. Dateline has run its course. A few things that may have turned people off is that as a former Judge, Cyrus is portrayed as a womanizer and someone with a gambling addiction. Though these two are in todays society, it may be to much of an “in the face” for viewers.
My husband and I really like Outlaw and of course Jimmy Smits. I think NBC should have given it more of a chance. We are DVRing every new eposide and will watch it no matter what night they move it to – kicked this week to Saturday because of a two hour Dateline. NBC should have put it in a better time slot in the first place!!!!!
This is an excellent show and should not be cancelled. Dateline is too long. Needs to be 1 hour only. Outlaw deals with current issues and how a person can stand up for people who would not otherwise be helped. Jimmy Smits is an excellent actor and should not be treated this way. We need more people Cyrus Garza who are willing to give up person gain for others.
I am truly surprised! I thought this was a unique idea. I really
liked the show, one of my favorite this season. I do ,however
think the sub-plot (the gambling) is unnecessary, and may dilute from the main plot. As always, love Jimmy Smits
