Times are hard for the Farrells of Shay Mountain. WGN America has cancelled its Outsiders TV show after just two seasons. That there will be no Outsiders season three comes as a bit of a surprise, because the (albeit low-rated) Appalachian family drama was the cable channel’s top performer in the Nielsen ratings. The April 25th season two finale will now serve as an unintentional Outsiders TV series finale.
Outsiders stars Joe Anderson, David Morse, Ryan Hurst, Gillian Alexy, Kyle Gallner, Thomas M. Wright, and Christina Jackson. The WGN America drama follows the Farrell clan. This tight-knit isolationist family has lived atop Shay Mountain for over two hundred years. They are constantly at odds with those who live outside of their community.

Sony Pictures Television to Shop Outsiders TV Show to Other Networks
Deadline reports Sony Pictures Television will try to shop around a third season of Outsiders, but it’s kind of late in the year to do so. The news outlet also mentioned the possibility that parent-company Tribune Media is looking to sell off WGN America as a reason for cancelling its highest rated show. Here’s more.
Speculation about a potential Tribune sale, which has been going on for years, intensified recently with a report about a potential merger with Sinclair. There have been rumors about potentially stripping the company to get it ready for a sale though in a statement about Outsiders‘ cancellation, Kern stresses that the company’s intends to “expand” WGNA’s original content and to “be reallocating our resources to a more diverse programming strategy and to new structures.” Here is his full statement:
After three years of investing in marquee, brand-defining dramas, WGN America has successfully expanded its audience, its reach, and its presence in the minds of viewers. In our next phase, we intend to expand our original and unique content to continue growing our relevance and appeal to the widest possible audience. To achieve this, we will be reallocating our resources to a more diverse programming strategy and to new structures, enabling us to expand both the quantity and breadth of content aired by WGN America.
This move is designed to deliver even more value to our advertising and distribution partners. To free up the resources to reach this goal, we will unfortunately not be renewing Outsiders. We are grateful to our production partners at Sony Pictures Television and the terrifically talented people who made the show possible.

Season 3 season 3 Season 3…. Too much left undone. We need closure
I’m so mad they quit this show it is very good and it leaves so much untold. I hate cliffhangers, and this is as intense as they get, they NEED to finish the show

They really suck leaving the series a cliff hanger!!!
We, too, are late to watching “The Outsiders”. Both my husband were transfixed to every episode. We are heartbroken that there will be no closure and/or a Season 3. It would be great to know who we can contact to share our disappointment.
I’m a late watcher…it been out since 2016 and I’m watching in 2023!! They need to reevaluate the rating…We need season 3!!!! Show is amazing!!
I would love for Netflix to pick up the outsiders. The show was unique and intresting very entertaining. The last episode has us all guessing. This was seriously an awesome show and it needs to comeback great cast, great story line hard to find shows like that today!
Love the show.. I want a season 3
Love the Outsiders. It seems the good shows always get canceled because they want to reach younger people. The younger people are not home watching tv!
This show is too good to cancel forever
I am completely in LOVE THE OUTSIDERS. What a shame it was canceled after two season. Anything Appalachian is always interesting but add great actors who are easy on the eyes and viewers love…. Like I’ve never loved a show ever as much as I was enjoying this. I’m very sad
I agree. Was loving the whole show, every character and their backstory. Was just starting to get very interesting and then poof, was taken away
Please bring the show back. This is such a great show!
Really big bummer they’re not going to tie up all the loose ends on this show. I loved it besides a few things. I didn’t feel a lot of remorse for the death of characters for some reason, which I believe could be substandard character development maybe. I mean, on Peaky Blinders I cried when Tommy’s wife took bullets and died in his arms. Even after she was a informant and whatever else. Off point tho. The point of my comment is I’m bummed about the cancellation of season three. I really wanted to see the Sheriff take down the… Read more »
This is a terrible shame to not continue this show, leave us hanging. It was one of the best if not the best series out there. Something refreshingly different and nail bitingly intense. What do they mean by more diverse audiences, more of the same old stuff? This show is as diverse as it gets!!! I am extremely disappointed, NOT happy about this blunder.
Dont leave this awesome series incomplete.
It’s such a shame. ….
I don’t see how they could keep the original cast even if they did.
