Over the past year, TNT really cleaned house by cancelling several of their drama series. They’re supposedly now favoring “edgier” series. Does Proof, a show that focuses on death and the afterlife, fit with that new strategy? How will it do in the ratings? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.
On Proof, Doctor Carolyn “Cat” Tyler (Jennifer Beals) recently lost her son, saw her marriage end, and become estranged to her teenage daughter. Cat is persuaded by cancer-stricken billionaire Ivan Turing (Matthew Modine) to search for evidence that death is not the end and this takes her on a deeply personal and emotional journey. The rest of the cast includes David Sutcliffe, Joe Morton, Edi Gathegi, Caroline Rose Kaplan, Callum Blue, and Annie Thurman.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
8/18 update: If you ran TNT, would you cancel or keep this series?
9/24 update: TNT has cancelled Proof after one season. Details here.
Final season averages: 0.31 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 2.12 million total viewers.

What do you think? Do you like watching the Proof TV series on TNT? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
Cancel proof
We gave this show the benefit of the doubt after the first episode, to see if the female lead character would soften her approach to her colleagues and patients. Unfortunately, her ugly attitude and treatment toward those around her continued into the second episode. Cancel or not – we will not be watching this show. There are better things we can do with our time.
Still feeling this out…only 2 episodes in, but so far so good. Jennifer Beals’ character is kind of cold, but I love her ex-hubby, the African intern, and “Papa Pope’s” characters. I liked the main story of the 2nd epi. It was both romantic and sad at the same time…
My favorite part is Jennifer’s character. I think its the first realistic professional women ever on tv. I hate cop show women who act like they can beat up men and they are so street wise., Thats irritating. But a women that is risking her career on research that could make her a laughing stock so no one would ever hire her agin, even though she is an excellent surgeon to waste her time on n on sense like life after death should be irritated, and afraid of discovery. And a strong leader expects a lot of their underlings. They… Read more »
I must respectfully disagree. Those around her are NOT her “followers”. They are her colleagues. Both they, and the patients, are worthy of being treated with respect – something she does not show
One further thing – to call life after death “nonsense” shows a complete lack of respect for those of us who believe there is something beyond the grave. You may believe otherwise, but I would never disrespect you because your belief differs from mine.
I was looking forward to this show. I do not like Debra Wingers character. She’s nasty, rude, arrogant and it really puts me off. She doesn’t fit or something is off with her? I can’t explain what it is?
You mean Jennifer Beals? I don’t think Debra Winger is in this series.
Yes, sorry about that! She’s a good actress, but her character seems out of sync or something? Maybe it’s just me?
I really like her. She is dealing with completely absurd situation, and doing research that could ruin her career. She is acting appropriately. its that ponytailed buttkisser i hate. Ivan is an ass too. How dare he show up at the place she works when the research he hired her to do is so damaging to a career?!
The 2nd show soured me on the legitimacy of the script. I wanted a show based on actual experiences, not voodoo. I won’t waste my time watching drivel when good material is available with very little effort.
There is no material, because there can be no proof of life after death. What did you expect. This is fiction anyhow.
Really enjoyed the premise and the show in general. We will keep watching for sure. Two older adults in this household.
I absolutely LOVE this show!! Now I can’t wait until Tuesday nights!!
I do too
Not a Beals fan but the show was pretty good.
After seeing the trailerr multiple times, I was excited to see this show and it didn’t disappoint. The actors are really interesting and I love the relationship so far of the Mom and daughter. I love the Aftrican-American intern too. Jennifer Beals did a great job. It’s a great concept and I am looking forward to seeing what kind of cases they work on. Thanks TNT!
Well, let’s hope they put some warmth into Jennifer Beals’ character. So far, she’s all ***** and no warmth. There’s not a single character, so far, that I feel that I can connect with. And, if you don’t care about any of the characters, you end up not watching – no matter how compelling or intriguing the underlying theme of the series.
Ron, I totally agree with you. After two episodes I dislike the Beals character. Dislike her enough to stop watching. Such a disappointment.
I loved it. Can’t wait to c the next one episode. Please give us a 2nd season.
Nice show. I DVR’d it and watched last night. Itas a great subject and I want to see how she explores it. You can’t go wrong Kyra and Jennifer.
I lovr Jennifer Beals. The show is great.
Well, I just saw the 1st episode…I decided
Proof needed my attention because
Kyra Sedgewick is the executive producer.
I loved the Closer & never missed an
episode…she would only bring a top
notch concept to TNT & she did. Afterlife
Has my attention…Jennifer Beals, I have seen
In forever…she has just the right edginess
to make the show fascinating. I shall be telling my family & friends…wishing
Proof much success…thank you!
And…how do you feel now? I started watching for the same reason as you. I love Kyra and her role in the Closer, but she’s not as good of a producer as she is an actress. This show (Proof) stinks on casting, writing, and acting. As far as Beals, just the wrong person for this role. If they were looking for the “strong woman” character, they achieved that with Beals, but she exudes zero warmth factor, which makes it impossible to care about her.
Funny, I hated the closer, because I hated the uppity personality of Kyras character. But I like this just fine. I dislike women who try to be tough. But a woman being skeptical , rational, and expecting a lot of her underlings is fine. Most women cops in tv shows irritate me, actually, because they try to be as tough as the men…and its off putting. They should just Just be themselves. Jennifer Beals character is excellent.
@Martine : What’s so incredible about a 5’3″ woman that weighs 120 lbs kicking the a$$ of a 6’2″ guy that weighs 220lbs? After all, isn’t the narrative now that, “anything a man can do, a woman can do too.”? Being PC doesn’t require a foundation in reality.
Love the show
