AMC has decided to cancel Rubicon after one season of 13 episodes.
Billed as a conspiracy thriller, Rubicon is set in a government intelligence agency where nothing is as it seems. The cast includes James Badge Dale, Dallas Roberts, Jessica Collins, Christopher Evan Welch, Lauren Hodges, Arliss Howard, and Miranda Richardson.
The TV show was previewed back in June and attracted a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.07 million viewers. When the series officially kicked off in August, the demo dropped to a 0.3 rating with 1.9 million viewers. The demo dropped to a 0.2 after that and the whole season averaged a 0.3 rating and 1.25 million viewers.
That wasn’t enough for AMC to want a second season and the cable channel has now cancelled the series.
Of the cancellation decision, AMC released the following statement, “Rubicon’ gave us an opportunity to tell a rich and compelling story, and we’re proud of the series. This was not an easy decision, but we are grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such a phenomenally talented and dedicated team.”
The 13th and final episode of Rubicon aired on October 17th.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that it’s been cancelled? What would you liked to have seen in season two?

I think we should bring the people who cancelled the show to the most beautiful restaurant in the most exciting setting. Bring them a fine glass of wine and appetizer. Then, show them a menu that promises the most out-of-this-world food. Let them order, and then, as the waiter brings the dishes to them, make them stop and dump the food on the floor. That is what they did to us with taking Rubicon off the air. If you’r going to create these type of evolving and slow-paced shows, then commit to three seasons. Otherwise, why should we bother getting… Read more »
I watch a lot of TV and Rubicon was easily one of the best shows in years. I am deeply saddened to see it go. I thought AMC would take a leap and give this show a chance, like they did with Mad Men, but I guess not. It is too bad that more people can’t appreciate quality storytelling when they see it. And for the record, I did not find the show “slow” at all. It was very interesting to me.
I loved Rubicon. Though a bit slow, it was intelligently written and required some thought on the part of the viewers. What a perfect example of the dumbing down of America. We watch Real Housewives but not Rubicon. It’s hard to invest yourself in an open-ended serial program that has a high probability of being cancelled after one season. Is there no intelligent life left out there? I’m going back to books!!
I totally agree…I’m sick of TV pandering to the lowest common denominator..this show was made for those of us who enjoy intelligent conversation and good stories..I’m going back to books, too!
You have got to be kidding!!!!!! We have anxiously awaited more shows only to hear now that there will not be any. This is (was) a show full of wonderful, talented actors working with gifted writers. This was an outstanding show for suspense lovers.
I want to propose that a network we all thought would give great writing and actors a chance does not exist after all. Mad Men got slow and the only reason they didn’t cancel Mad Men was because Mad Men was there first step into programmed television. Now with Mad Men and Breaking Bad giving them publicity they are now acting like the ******** we all hate. AMC You just crossed the line into the realm of NBCs and FOXs. Eventually you will pull shows after two episodes and us viewers will once again be fucked. You could have given… Read more »
The show was not geared for the mass audience on TV. It required too much concentration – which made it a special show.
This is it for me for TV serials like this– I will not watch open ended serials on TV any longer
Canceling a quality show like this is my last straw
AMC should feel the wrath of the viewing public
Wow, seriously… it did start out a bit slow (only for my tastes, I’m sure), but it just got so damn good, without falling into cliché. Not that I know that much about the TV industry, but I really think it was a bad decision to cancel. Sure, it was probably a bit too cerebral for the general populace (as sad as that may be), but sometimes it’s just not about numbers. They kept the original “Star Trek” going for three seasons, even though ratings deemed that it should be canceled after the first. Long term thinking is missing here,… Read more »
What– it’s cancelled again– AMC– are you guys flirting with us? Because “coy” has been cancelled– so last-century… changing the time slot and giving viewers a chance to appreciate writing that lets characters emerge slowly, that would be refreshing. Even the least sophisticated among us gets that we can’t expect a series about real conspiracies to be popular, but that’s just the point. Look at the quality of the camera work, the layered dialog, the opportunities for surprising turns from characters that seemed tame at first– of course we had fun!
LOVED the show Rubicon. Great writing, great acting and you actually had to use your brain for the plots. What a shame it was cancelled!
Best new show. Jeez, this sucks.
I loved this TV show. It is strange to find any show dealing with conspiracies and false flag attacks. It was quite realistic and the characters were well shaped. The plot was really intriguing and pretty intelligent. Not the typical TV show so “politically correct” where any “out of the box” situation has no place, and cosequently just suitable for people with 12 years old mind.
It’s a real pity.
This is one of the shows even though I grew to hate it because of the pacing that should of been more enjoyable.
After this show ended, I was left with the incomplete feeling as I did with the show John from Cincinnati.
I can think of 6 people off the bat who planned their Sunday nights around the next episode of Rubicon. AMC: Your network has to be out of its collective, corporate mind to cancel this extraordinary series. . .with its brilliant set designs, ingenious use of New York City, and, of course, James Badge Dale with his cat-like movements. . .Bring it back!!
A show that you actually had to pay attention to and missing an episode meant something. Gee, could that be the problem?
Hats off to the writers & actors. Please know that you were done in by network hacks.
A real loss for the viewing public. Thanks for 13 wonderful shows!
