Although CMT cancelled its Sun Records TV show after just one season, the song may continue. The Memphis Flyer reports producers are pitching season two to Amazon and The CW. A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, Jonah Lees, Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
In Sun Records, Sam Phillips (Murray), shepherds young musicians Johnny Cash (Fonteyne), Elvis Presley (Milligan), Carl Perkins (Dustin Ingram) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Christian Lees). These up-and-coming white musicians combine hillbilly country music, with the ’50s R&B sound of African-American artists like Muddy Waters, B.B. King (Castro Coleman), Fats Domino, and Ike Turner (Holliday).
According to the report, Memphis Film and Television Commission boss Linn Sitler said Kevin Kane, president of the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, paid the rent on the show’s soundstage here for another month, to give the producers time to pitch the show to other outlets. Here’s more:
CMT already paid for scripts and outlines for season two of the show, Sitler said. So, they are “ready to go” for a second season. She said she has her “fingers crossed” for the meetings with the other networks, though she said “it may be a long shot.”
About $9 million is already set aside in the state budget for season two and season three of “Sun Records.” However, if the show is not renewed, that money all goes back to Nashville in a pot set aside for other film and television projects across the state.
Sun Records hails from Thinkfactory Media. Leslie Greif executive produced the first season with showrunner Gil Grant. Barry Berg served as co-executive producer and Herb Nanas and Colin Escott served as producers. The series is based on the book, Million Dollar Quartet, written by Floyd Mutrux and Escott. CMT confirmed the series cancellation, back in May.
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV show? Would you follow it to The CW or Amazon for a second season?
If they could stick to the facts, I would love to see this show come back. That wasn’t done in the original airings. The facts are what make this series interesting seeing as it’s history we are supposed to be watching and learning about. The actors and the atmosphere of this series were superb.
The show to me showed great success
I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s
We nee shows like this one.
Baby boomers still should have a say what good or not
Please bring it back! They’re all great actors, and I’m loving Chad Michael Murray!
I hope so. I loved this show and was looking forward to seeing how the singers besides Elvis got started. I would even join Amazon prime so I could see it.
Yay! I’m glad it’s not cancelled anymore. I love to watch a season two on cable tv. Can’t wait for it to come back on cable tv.
It still has not been picked up by a network. As of now, it is cancelled.
Can’t wait till season two. Season one was amazing and I bet season two will be twice that love ❤️ the show. Please people make it work.
Yes would definitely follow season two and beyond. Unbelievable cast and so well written. Please Amazon or CW pick it up!!!
One of the best shows on tv, no other reason to watch CMT, really.
Without a doubt. Perhaps the lower audience numbers was due to the competition of that particular time slot. This was a great series and we are disappointed to say the least about it being dropped. We will keep watching and hoping it is picked up for seasons 2, 3 4 & more!
I think it was one of the best shows ever produced to show the air of music under sun records my wife and I both enjoyed it so much we were very disappointed when it didn’t come back
Yes i would follow season two. A great show.
Please give Sun Records a second season! With the right Network and Marketing Team it would be an International Success. I don’t think CMT put it on the talk show circuit or promoted it enough. The writers, set designers and actors were all outstanding! I will, along with most everyone I’ve talked to, tune in for the second season even if we have to pay for Amazon or Netflix! TCB!!⚡️
I think that was one of the best shows ever and I would be glad to follow it where ever it went
Fantastic! I hope one of them picks it up. It was a really really good show.
Amazon needs some help for good shows. They should pick up the new seasons. Win, win!
My husband and I are 73 years old and we looked forward each week to watch Sun Records. We could not believe that CMT cancelled it since that was the only show we watched on that channel. I’m hoping that CW is the one that picks it up since we get that station on cable.
