Although CMT cancelled its Sun Records TV show after just one season, the song may continue. The Memphis Flyer reports producers are pitching season two to Amazon and The CW. A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, Jonah Lees, Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
In Sun Records, Sam Phillips (Murray), shepherds young musicians Johnny Cash (Fonteyne), Elvis Presley (Milligan), Carl Perkins (Dustin Ingram) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Christian Lees). These up-and-coming white musicians combine hillbilly country music, with the ’50s R&B sound of African-American artists like Muddy Waters, B.B. King (Castro Coleman), Fats Domino, and Ike Turner (Holliday).
According to the report, Memphis Film and Television Commission boss Linn Sitler said Kevin Kane, president of the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, paid the rent on the show’s soundstage here for another month, to give the producers time to pitch the show to other outlets. Here’s more:
CMT already paid for scripts and outlines for season two of the show, Sitler said. So, they are “ready to go” for a second season. She said she has her “fingers crossed” for the meetings with the other networks, though she said “it may be a long shot.”
About $9 million is already set aside in the state budget for season two and season three of “Sun Records.” However, if the show is not renewed, that money all goes back to Nashville in a pot set aside for other film and television projects across the state.
Sun Records hails from Thinkfactory Media. Leslie Greif executive produced the first season with showrunner Gil Grant. Barry Berg served as co-executive producer and Herb Nanas and Colin Escott served as producers. The series is based on the book, Million Dollar Quartet, written by Floyd Mutrux and Escott. CMT confirmed the series cancellation, back in May.
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV show? Would you follow it to The CW or Amazon for a second season?
That show is great. For anyone with an interest in the history of rock n roll this is a must see. I thought the show was informative as it was entertaining. Please bring it back
It was great. I see no reason why it’s been cancelled. Please bring it back soon.
We LOVED the show! It is my husbands favorite!! Please bring it back!!!
I found the show interesting and enjoyed watching. Please continue it.
Please please continue the show. Please. I need to know what happens next. Please do t do this.
ABSOLUTELY need a Season #2!!!!
I can get CW but not Amazon. I am disappointed with CMT. I may drop it. Please, CW pick up this great show. It was just getting started. So much more to learn about those early years of the Legends. Give it a chance.
Not only does Sun Records bring me back to my youth, it entertains and resonates in my head. Needless to say: “I love it”. Please renew and bring season 2 to folks like me…and if you do, advertise this show like it deserves to be advertised. I’m willing to bet that if more people knew about it viewing numbers would at least triple! .
The CW works but not Amazon! Cable bill too high already and many have no alternative. Too many good shows lost to subscriptions only networks. Why would CMT pay for something and not aire it? Makes no sense. Without “Sun Records” the only reason we’re paying extra for CMT is “Nashville” & “Still The King” but if this trend continues we’ll gladly return to saving the money spent for CMT very quickly!
They canceled it? You’re kidding. Didn’t even get to the good stuff yet, even my 14 yrs old couldn’t wait for season 2. Wasn’t enough murder and dope and rage I guess, mild yet entertaining TV doesn’t sell. PLEASE pick it up SOMEBODY!
Absolutely need season 2!!!
My husband and I are a big sun record fans. Finally a show that doesn’t insult my inntelligence and it’s cancelled. I hope the promoters get out and pitch this show to some other networks. It doesn’t matter where it ends up , I will watch it.
This show is awesome! Someone needs to pick iy up there is so much more history to be shown. Please bring this show back!
I really hope there is a season 2 of sun records, it’s one of mine and my husband’s favorite series.
Please bring it back!!!!!!!
