While the press information for last Thursday’s finale of The Astronaut Wives Club promoted it as only the “season finale,” it seemed pretty clear that, once the episode aired, the show had ended for good. Many viewers had a tough time envisioning what a second season could be.
Now that the finale has aired, ABC has confirmed that episode 10 was indeed the last episode of the low-rated series, eliminating any question that there will be a second season.
For her part, series creator Stephanie Savage agrees with that decision and told TV Insider, “To us on the creative side, it’s always been a mini-series with a beginning, middle and end, with no possibility of a Season 2 because we told the story. I love that a lot of people love the characters and the world, but I don’t really see how this story gets told over again.”
Based on the book by Lily Koppel, The Astronaut Wives Club focuses on seven women who were key players behind some of the biggest events in American history. As America’s astronauts were launched on death-defying missions, the lives of their young wives were transformed — seemingly overnight — from military spouses to American royalty. The cast includes Yvonne Strahovski, Dominique McElligott, Odette Annable, Joanna García, Erin Cummings, Azure Parsons, Zoe Boyle, Bret Harrison, Aaron McCusker, Wilson Bethel, Kenneth Mitchell, and Desmond Harrington.
What do you think? Do you like The Astronaut Wives Club TV show? Would you have been open to watching a second season?
I really enjoyed this show and it is a terrible shame that the network decided that it wasn’t worth keeping. Although I am not from that generation it really did a great job of bringing me back to a time in history with a new perspective on the space program’s launch. I agree with others stating that it will be missed.
I also firmly believe that historical pieces based on “real life” American accomplishments should be celebrated. What a glorious responsibility to teach our younger generations what an amazing fete NASA and our astronauts achieved in the midst of tumultuous times. Knowledge through entertainment is the perfect genre to enlighten all of us.
I am in complete agreement with you ladies. What a wonderful journey back in time. As the widow of a space and history enthusiast, I reveled in the memories that I shared with my late husband. How little faith the major networks have in thoughful, intelligent programming and the people who watch them.
I was so looking forward to seeing more about the wives lives together as time goes on and I wasn’t pleased that this was a show but now it’s said that it’s a mini series. Even if you didn’t use the same wives, the space program has had many different astronauts and you could have made a show series out of each generation of wives. This is so disappointing because I felt this show was worth watching and even my fiance would sit down and watch ever episode with me and he likes car shows usually. You created some thing… Read more »
Annoying that abc cancels good shows. I also was a fan of pan am
I am SO disappointed! This is an amazing show, I read all about these events as a child, worshipped the men who went up there and made history, but never until now considered what it must have been like for their wives and families. I loved that they told it from the wives’ angle, it was educational and a real eye-opener. I would have LOVED to have seen a second season.
Oh darn! Such a good show! Another one bites the dust! How awful!!!!! It was educational as well as entertaining. It was nice to see the NASA from the women’s point of view. This was my generation and it was good to see it all again. Loved it. The ladies were super! Will definitely miss it .
I used my DVR to record the show so I would not miss an episode. As a Baby Bommer I enjoyed the era of the show and even more the story of the early astronaut program and what the families went through. I am so saddened only one season was allowed. Is there any way possible the decision will be reconsidered?
I’m so sad, this was such a great show! There was depth, and humor. Not to mention our history , that all of children really aren’t learning amymore. This show is about what helped make America and shaped our country. All the wonderful shows get cancelled. Loved the clothes too!!
A great documentary of a very important phase of American life.
It is told from a female perspective, but with a very real background of the drama of the space program. Why do all shows have to be shoot ’em ups? The reality of the danger for both the men and the women in the space program is forceful and brilliantly portrayed.
I am so disappointed there is no season 2.
What a major disappointment!
As a lifelong resident of Brevard County Florida, I was elated to see a series about the magnificent beginnings of the space program. It fascinated me to hear the stories of the great women who were behind these brave men.
Great show with an awesome cast ……… at least the show had a conclusion episode to tidy up and actually finish……..unlike so many other series that the networks just cancel and leave you hanging.
ABC does not always finish a show when it is cancelled. They left everyone hanging when they cancelled Off the Map.
It is a shame. There were SO many stories behind the astronauts, including the ones from the first years, that they would have had no problem coming up with a Season 2 and more. Of course that would involve in depth research, going over the countless hours of interviews and stories the men themselves have told in numerous documentaries that were not the ‘everyday’ things people heard about. Still just as interesting to say the least. ABC is notorious in this regard for their lack of foresight in programming. Not to mention cancelling shows that don’t get top ratings right… Read more »
i am so annoyed!!! why does every show that i end up loving always get cancelled!?! I wish people weren’t so mainstream and took more of an interest in these types of show that have some depth to them! I looked forward to this show every week and I’m so sad to know that it’s ended! 🙁
Truly Bummed!!! Yes, at least one more season. Please, reruns.
