Today, ABC airs the final episode of their daytime series, The Chew. Last month, the network announced that the cooking-themed talk show had been cancelled after more than 1,400 episodes. Will you miss it? Was this the right decision?
Launching in September 2011, The Chew replaced the All My Children soap opera after its 41 years on the network. A talk show that incorporates cooking and lifestyle-related segments, the series was initially hosted by Mario Batali, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly, Daphne Oz, and Michael Symon. Oz departed the show after six seasons and Batali left following sexual misconduct allegations in December 2017.
ABC decided to cancel The Chew in order to expand their Good Morning America series to three hours. NBC’s Today show has had a third hour (with various titles) since October 2000. The current incarnation is Megyn Kelly Today.
While the third hour of Today typically followed the regular program’s two-hour broadcast, hour three of Good Morning America will air separately, in the afternoon. The new hour of GMA is expected to be taped and not presented live, as the regular program is. ABC is making this move as Today has been taking the lead in various demographics in the morning ratings race.
If ABC had wanted to expand GMA to three hours, couldn’t they have replaced either The View or Live with Kelley and Ryan? That was unlikely to happen since both perform better in the ratings than The Chew. In particular, The View has been growing its audience and has been seeing its best ratings since the 2014-15 season (a rarity in today’s landscape). Meanwhile, The Chew has been in last place, ranking 13th out of 13 daytime series.
While ABC may have high hopes for a third hour of GMA, they no doubt have an uphill battle ahead. Daytime audiences often don’t like change and some viewers still hold a grudge against The Chew for replacing All My Children. Time will tell if the new hour of GMA will fare any better than The Chew did.

I truly believe The Chew should not have been cancelled. The show was fun, entertaining & informative. I learned a lot of great tips & how-to’s on cooking, as well as, crafting ideas. The hosts, Clinton, Carla & Michael had great chemistry together & when they had guest stars cooking along side them, it was awesome. I looked forward to watching The Chew every day for a hour full of cooking, laughter & surprises! Bring back “The Chew”!!!!!
Bring it back. Every time their is a good show they cancel it. Get rid of Kelly and Ryan, and the third hour of GMA.
I enjoyed watching the Chew on my Lunch Hour with my Mom it was a great stress relief and they had great recipes. Who needs another Talk show there all the same. Hopefully they can be picked up again in the Future. SAD!
The Chew should never have been canceled. The best show ever! You learned so much about cooking, you laughed a lot everyday….and you looked forward to seeing it the next day! Bring it back!
I strongly believe The Chew should NOT have been cancelled. It was not only an informative cooking show, it brought humor into every home. You didn’t have to be a professional chef to learn these recipes. I am not knocking other shows, but I don’t believe TV needs another hour of GMA. The Chew won awards! It was actually getting better. While I also am not knocking the 2 original hosts who were now gone, I believe the show got better with the 3 remaining! Bring it back, PLEASE!!!!
ABC made a big mistake cancelling this show and then by replacing it with another talk show with two boring people. They should be replacing The View! I won’t be watching!
The Chew was a great show. It was a fun show and an informative show. The Chew Crew was funny and it felt like you were with family. You got to know everyone. Like I’m going to miss Micheal stories while he becomes a granddad, Clinton feud with the chipmunks this summer, Carla travels!! I don’t believe the show has low ratings check our Facebook page on Save the Chew !! I think a lot of people tape the show. I won’t be watching Good Morning America . The Chew was informative, fun and a great way to learn how to cook. It also inspired some great friendships among the hosts. So very sad to see it go.
The Chew was watched by so many in our rural area. We learned a lot about cooking, crafts, decorating and so many other things. There was so much laughter and fun times they had on the show together which brought the laughter back to viewers. They will truly be missed!! Best wishes to all, and hopefully another station will pick them up!
The Chew team is the best! They are family. I’ve enjoyed their shows for many years and have picked up so many tips from each of the hosts. I am so sorry that they will no longer be part of my afternoon. I hope Carla has fun with Michael on the premier show, but don’t expect Chew fans to be won over. I can’t believe The Chew was cancelled. In my opinion it is the best show on channel 7. It entertains and teaches at the same time. I will not watch Michael and Sahara!!!!! The ABC news is already boring. We get the news all day long why not put on a program like ” The Chew” for our entertainment and education.
The Chew should not have been cancelled, It is a show that everyone could get a good laugh from, and learn some tips and recipes. Carla, Michael & Clinton are the greatest. Will not be watching GMA
There is enough of these so called news entertainment shows. The Chew was one of the best shows on daytime tv. The View on the other hand is the one that should have gone. I am tired of watching the same thing over & over again. The Chew was fun to watch & you learn from it also.
NO, The Chew should not have been cancelled. Please, any network, restart The Chew. Well, maybe with a new name. Wouldn’t want to get into trouble with ABC over rights!
