Jason Ritter, star of The Event, tweeted today that, “I finished my last day of shooting on The Event. These last four episodes have been amazing! Catch up on old ones so you’re ready Monday!”
Talking about the show’s future, Ritter also wrote, “I would say if the ratings keep doing what they did on Monday, Season 2 is very likely! But we need all of your help to spread the word!!”
While we don’t know exactly what NBC has in mind for their 2011-12 schedule, it seems that Ritter is being overly optimistic about The Event’s chances for a second season. The show started off with very healthy ratings back in September but they quickly declined to very unhealthy levels.
The Event premiered with a 3.6 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 10.88 million viewers, and then quickly slid downward. By November, the numbers fell to a 1.7 rating and 5.54 million viewers. They stayed at that level for the remainder of 2010 and then NBC put the series on hiatus, promising a relaunch in early 2011.
When The Event returned in early March, it seemed like a lot of people had lost interest and/or figured that the series had already been cancelled. Since the return, it’s been averaging a 1.2 demo rating and 4.39 million viewers. Those are horrible numbers, even by NBC’s present standards. Remember, the network cancelled Undercovers when it was averaging a 1.4 rating and 5.97 million viewers.
This week’s episode of The Event was up by 18% in the demo. That’s very encouraging until you realize that the percentage increase is based on the numbers from a week earlier, a 1.1 rating and under four million. Those are CW-size ratings and it’s not hard to improve on those.
If fans of The Event can rally and the numbers keep increasing for the last four episodes of the season, NBC could very well consider renewing it. That’s going to be tough at this point.
If that doesn’t happen, let’s just hope that the writers wrap up the season in a fulfilling way for the fans who have stuck with it. The finale airs May 23rd.
What do you think? Does The Event still have a chance for season two? Will you watch the final episodes of the season? Do you think they’ll give enough closure in case it’s cancelled?

I wonder if the network executives take into account time-shift viewing? It sounds like they are still relying on just overnight ratings. This sort of programme tends to be recorded a lot, rather than watched live (especially when they mess with the time-slots). In Britain the gold standard is supposed to include any viewing in the previous 7 days but I worry executives still tend to make decisions purely on the basis of overnight ratings, nevermind DVD sales and the like.
I watched in 2 days the whole season 1… I think it was excellent! CAN’T WAIT for season 2 !!!! DO IT, damn’it!!!
Regards from Romania.
we need to know what happens next – so we need season 2
I love the series. Event was great. At first i didnt know about the show because of the title. Now that i saw it. I want more. I also want V to come back.
Please continue the show. Best cliffhanger in years, and now the news it will not be continued. The Netherlands can’t wait
Here in holland we just cant wait for season 2. Its the best serie ever.
Fantastic series!! We can’t wait for season 2 in Holland.
I have just watched the last episode and we want more!!!
Come on with the second season!!!!
This show really needs to go on! It would really be a shame if they quit the show now.. Especially the cliffhanger pushes me to watch more episodes.
THE EVENT NEEDS TO GO ON!!
Hi i’m fron Isreal and we watched the all season. we would like for the serioues to continue to season two.
Please, please SYFY pick up The Event and create Season 2 and going forward. It is such a terrific show….I love the cast and the premise of the show!! Surely some network with more insight than NBC will pick it up…..I think it would have had a better fan base if there had been more advertising of it…I have never seen anything promoting it at all…holding a good thought….
Series like 24, V and The Event must always go on!!!
Please please ,
keep it alive
After that cliffhanger, I hope true fans of such a wonderfully done show willy rally together in demand of more. Screw the networks, Breaking Bad does fine with a hardcore fan base.
not a chance, because it’s a good show.
please do a season 2!!!
