To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

This stinks. I really liked this show. Great writing, great acting and all around fun. I’m so sad.
I am so disappointed Good Guys was cancelled. I looked forward to it each week.
This show was our favorite. I was wondering when are they coming back when I found this site. If anyone from FOX follows anything that is posted here then please listen…. your numbers lie… there are so many people I know loves it…
Please reconsider!!
Good Guys was a good show. Humour and enjoyable, It had a believable “bromance” between Hanks and Whitford’s characters. Sad to see it go
I am soooo upset we love this show, so very funny!!!!! Please bring it back.
Please bring it back!
loved that show
COME ON!! It’s more than a little ‘crimey’ that Fox is even entertaining the thought of cancelling. The Good Guys will join the ranks of shows cancelled because the masses couldn’t understand witty writing (ex. Arrested Development). What’s next? There hasn’t been a clown-related reality show (Jersey Shore doesn’t count), so how about “When Clowns Go Bad” Fox execs?!?
Bring back The Good Guys
bring it back
Good Guys is my absolute favorite TV show. I refuse to use past tense. I have been waiting for it to come back on. I can not believe a show of this quality is even being considered for cancellation. Oh, but wait–it’s on Fox which has a history of canceling some of the best shows in recent years. The decision makers at Fox need to seriously wake up and realize that not everyone out there follows the masses. Give the show a chance. Where do these ratings really come from anyway? Was Seinfeld given a chance? GOOD GUYS HAS IT… Read more »
This show was great and I looked forward to watching it on Friday nights. No wonder that we watch TVland! All you want to promote is cheap TV. Reaility shows and who in the —– wants to watch that?
I’d have to rank the Good Guys in my top 5. It’s on my TiVo each week. It figures, though. I guess it has to be a reality show to have a chance. Too many lame-ass reality shows have ruined network television. I’ll go back to USA, TNT, and TBS for my viewing. I hope they leave Chase alone. It’s about all Fox has left worth watching now…
It is sad that such a genuinely high quality program lasted only one season. From the very first episode I was surprised and delighted at just how cleverly written and well acted it was. I had expected more of the ususal fare offered on so many shows today. It quickly became one of my top favorites. There was humor, wit, clever plot twists, wonderful acting on the part of everyone involved and a lot of heart. In short, it was a feel good show. I am tired of shows that leave you feeling morose. My life has plenty of depressing… Read more »
this is garbage…Good Guys was a great show! good action, unique characters, GREAT interplay between the characters, and even a good moral of “doing something that is meaningful is more satisfying than clambering up the ladder”. I’m big-time disappointed this show is gone!
