To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

I’ve reviewed some of the most popular shows in their early stages during preview and feedback, such as the X-Files, and several different shows on various networks over many years. With most people on the computer these days and watching shows online, the ratings system going by only TV viewing only through cable is totally outdated and inaccurate to today’s standards of viewing content. This show was a good show I watched it online regularly and looked forward to each new episode, I am shocked this was cancelled and figured it had atleast 2 to 3 more seasons. With the… Read more »
The BEST comedy cop show I have ever seen. Bring it back!!
WHAT??!! NOOOOOOO!!!! Another great show lost in the sea of mediocrity. Well, this is more proof that networks always go to the lowest common denominator.
I dont watch much tv because most of it is not funny or entertaining. Now I will be watching even less, thanks FOX!
yes, very disappointing. was’nt given a fair shake. where was the advertising for this show? Came across it on my own and really enjoyed it. Had to search to find out when it was on because unlike “Bones”, “NCIS” etc. where you get sick of seeing all the comercials , I cannot recall any for “Good Guys”. Hopefully at least i will be able to purchase the 1st and only season at the video stores and due to the fact that you felt it was a poor sitcome you will not feel it necessary to charge the people who did… Read more »
I really enjoyed the show. Afte working hard all week, it gave me a release from reality and left me laughing and enjoying life.
Very sorry to just learn today that The Good Guys was cancelled. We thought it was just on a break and I looked it up to see when it would start again. It was really a funny show and we loved the characters. Maybe FOX was just too slow to understand the whimsy and plots.
We really had some good chuckles and looked forward to it. It seemed to be a neat spoof of all the over serious CSI’s and Law and Order and all those others which were the same old thing each week and which we didn’t watch.
The show was witty and the characters were great……beside the Mentalist it was about the only show I watched that wasn’t on TLC or National Geographic
I only watch basically three shows on tv. Burn Notice has been my favorite for a long time. When the Good Guys came out by the same writer as Burn Notice I was excited. I loved the show too. I couldn’t wait to watch it on Friday nights and was never disappointed. I think the show needs to run somewhere still. I hate hate hate hate (did I mention HATE) reality shows. I don’t watch much tv outside of Burn Notice and the Good Guys, except for FX’s Justified. I hope they come up with a better solution than just… Read more »
I’m really sorry this series has been cancelled, my husband and I really enjoyed it, it was funny, stupid, but really enjoyable. Bring it back.
I too, loved this show.. It’s impossible to find a decent comedy on TV. This was the only show that my husband and I would watch together. I kept waiting to see it show up on the schedule…but, NOOO. Fox keeps stupid crap like ‘Lie to Me’ and drops one of the best shows I have seen in years! Darn!
eh… once again another great show bites the dust.
I can’t believe this show has been cancelled !! We have been waiting for the new season and have been checking the lineup every week for it. FOX is making a huge mistake.. this show is a riot ! I agree with the others, try it in another time slot… we will watch it whatever night they decide on .. just don’t take it off PLEASE. This was the one show that we actually made time to sit down and watch each week.
Really disappointed to hear that this show was cancelled!!! It was fun, quirky, entertaining and we looked forward to watching it on Friday nights. It’s a shame Fox gave up on this so quickly. Loved Dan, “Jacko” and the guest appearances by Gary Cole.
I think FOX is being very stupid on this decision. It’s a great, funny show. I am really bummed about this. I wish there was a way to convince FOX to give the show a chance.
