To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

I loved this show, and I never missed an episode. I watched them on Hulu! You screwed up, bring this super funny well written show back for a second season. Please
This sucks!!!
The show was great!!!
Please bring this show back. It was worth staying home on Friday night to watch it. I thought the cast was great together and I enjoyed every show.
I’m really gonna miss this show. It’s sad when the network gets rid of a show because they are unwilling to realize the shows potential audience if given a better time slot or day of the week. I hope another network takes a look at it.
My husband & I loved this show. Old school cop really funny. Thought it was a great quirky show and looked forward to watching it each week.
I’ve been waiting for Good Guys to start up again and am REALLY sad & SUPER disappointed it has been cancelled. I hope they find a way to get it onto cable. These guys are hilarious. Where there’s a will there’s a way. If they really like this show they’ll find another way to keep it going – putting it somewhere where it will succeed with the right audience. There are so many great things about this show, I haven’t looked this forward to watching a TV show since Seinfeld. – That’s how much I’ll miss it.
Don’t cancel !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My husband and I absolutely loved this program!!!A laugh out loud show-yes it should definitely should be on a cable network channel!! I agree about all the reality junk that is on.
Terrible move by Fox….they keep on these terrible reality shows and when they have a quality, funny, quirky show with a lot of humour, they cancel it. Too bad. It was an excellent show.
Very disappointing that this show didn’t make it. Very funny duo and great group dynamics in Good Guys. Lots of laugh-out-loud writing. I hope cable reconsiders – it’s a gem, and I miss it.
I think this sucks. Good Guys is a funny show and I absolutely loved it. Bring back Good Guys Fox!
Wow , I’m shocked, I was so looking forward to the new shows . These guys are hilarious and what a fun show , one of the few shows I have to watch every week. So disappointing. I guess if they put a vampire in it or make it a mindless reality show it might of had a chance. Fox has no taste and doesn’t know a good , funny, original show when they see one!!!!! I agree give them another chance and put them in another time slot. Please bring back the Good Guys they were great!!!!
Wake up, Fox! This was a funny, quirky show with great actors. You could have tried it at difference time slots or just given it more time. There are so many stupid shows on now – one that is the crudest and most stupid is “2 1/2 Men” with Charlie Sheen. How that show can draw so many people is beyond me. It’s not funny – it’s just crude. Good Guys had humor that is so lacking in many shows these days. It made you actually laugh. It was two cops – one old school and one new school. They… Read more »
I loved the show and am really disappointed that it was canceled…..when I first saw the previews for it, I thought no way I wanted to watch it….I don’t watch much T.V. so the show I watch, better be really good. Then a friend of mine told me to watch The Good Guys, that it was his favorite show, so I told him I would, and I did, and I LOVED it! Couldn’t wait for the next episode… Dan Stark was a great character and it just worked. Funny and sweet with action….Please bring it back!!!!!!!
I’ve been waiting for “The Good Guys” to return; please reconsider this cancellation. This show was really something different and refreshing and the cast was perfect. Please bring this show back. Thanks. mbs
