To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

What is wrong with you people at FOX? This was a GREAT show!!! My husband and I looked forward to it every Friday night….but we often discussed the terrible time slot it was in. Seriously, people, BRING THIS SHOW BACK!!! Or better yet — maybe a “real network” will have the sense to pick it up and give it a decent viewing time. “The Good Guys” is definitely better than all those stupid reality shows!!!
Love the show, funny humor, old guy with young up and coming cop. Told all my friends over the holidays to watch the show. Now nothing. It’s a shame.
First Firefly, then Family Guy, and now the Good Guys….Fox get a idea of what people like….you suck
What is wrong with Fox? Are they morans? I will not watch this channel again in protest – this was a wonderfully funny show. Fox fails the public again.
This was a great show – we watched it all the time. It’s fun and entertaining – just what one needs from a tv show. Please bring it back – it’s perfect for USA Network.
I seriously need this show back. I don’t care if Fox wont produce it, I will watch it on USA, Spike, whatever. I just can’t believe a show like this got such bad ratings… it is probably Fox’s fault because they didn’t promote the show. I had to hear about it from a friend. This show could be huge if the right network was able to promote it well enough.
I love the Good Guys, it’s a great show, funny and entertaining. I would love to see it back on television. It’s always the good shows that leave and the junk stays. Fox you are an idiot.
i loved the show. Fox does it again. I really wished someone would cancel Fox. So many good shows thrown away. Fox, I hate you.
OK…USA NETWORK…PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PICK THIS SHOW UP!!!
One of our favorite shows. We tire of “blood and guts” shows. Nice to see a show with a little humor. Would like to see Fox bring it back.
stop that BS and bring season two!
My husband and I have been watching “The Good Guys” all season. It has been our favorite, “must-see” program ever since. It is extremely disturbing to us that it has been canceled!! Especially when we take into consideration all of the many graphic, gruesome, dark, ugly programs that consistently get even more so. Not all viewers are entertained by sex, violence and horror. Some of us just want to laugh!! And that is exactly what “The Good Guys” brought to us week after week. In my opinion Brad Whitford should have received a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for… Read more »
I can’t believe FOX canceled Good Guys! My husband and I were hooked from the first episode. We’re in our early thirties and REALLY want it back!
My husband and I are very disappointed as well. We loved the show! It did take a few episodes to understand the characters. I went to college in Texas and I thought Bradford’s character was a hoot! FOX you really should reconsider. Your problem FOX is that you are moving your shows around way too much! For those of us old timers (45-55) we can’t keep up with your scheduling changes and then we get frustrated and then finally give up! If you are just going after American Idol fans, then do it . . . but you are going… Read more »
No wonder I hardly watch the FOX channel – what idiots. This show was excellent! Funny! Great music and acting! FOX you disappointment once again.
