To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

Loved the show! Bring it back! Quirky is good.
We LOVED The Good Guys! Can’t believe ratings were low…just don’t believe that!
My husband and loved the show and miss it terribly! We would love to see it back on!!
I still sit down to watch TV and hope to find an episode, any episode, of The Good Guys – they are all great! Nothing good on TV anymore, except the same ol’ choices of violence or reality…. why do those continue and good shows like “The Good Guys” get cancelled! Please bring them back! Life needs more good clean comedy!!!!
What killed The Good Guys was moving it from mondays to friday. Get rid of bones, house, american idol, bobs burgers, human target, glee, traffic light, raising hope, these are shows that show be cancelled . They are sooooo boring and have no sense of witty humor. Fox TV sucks big time. Your sunday programming sucks too… American dad, and family guy with all that gay innuendo humor , that im sick of seeing and hearing. It makes me wonder about the human race , when stupid shows like Friends stay on forever and a cool show like THE GOOD GUYS gets cancelled. FOX TV… Read more »
Why is it, everytime I like a show, some idiot network csncels it? Then what are we left with, garbage like Jersey Shore and the Bachelor. Give us something decent and entertaining to watch, not junk.
The Good Guys was one of my favorite shows lately! Very upset its canceled!
I just found out the Good Guys was cancelled! This was one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time, and the chemistry between Hanks and Whitford was fabulous!!! There’s no justice if shows like this get cancelled and all the reality crap shows keep getting renewed. Reaper was another good show that deserved another chance. I hope that the 1st and only season of Good Guys at least gets released on dvd!!!
Deb, ive been trying to find out if THE GOOD GUYS are going to be released on DVD but no one seems to know. I know HULU has the episodes . But i cant get it to work with my computer. We lose a cool show and stupid crap like american idol and hell’s kitchen and kitchen nightmares stays on. Lame. Fox tv is very lame!!!
You guys are idiots for not continuing to do another season of the Good Guys. It was new and refreshing to see a show we could love and laugh at and get new quotes to throw around. I loved this show and I’m extremely disappointed that it’s been cancelled!!!
Why can’t FOX Entertainment achieve even a slight parity with FOX news channels?
For a media empire started by Rupert Murdoch, the man who rescued TV Guide (a magazine devoted to network entertainment), why can’t FOX Entertainment maintain one show that displays a unique writing style that pokes fun at itself.
The parodies of 70’s cop films, combined with the best aspects of classic “buddy films”, smartly overlaid onto a modern cop drama made for the perfect escape for those of us who are tired of the same old two-and-four.
What’s next; thinking of canceling Bones?
Well congratulations. You did it again. Finally we consumers get a great tv show that is upbeat and leaves us feeling good, and you cancel it!
I loved the show and I hate everything on network television. It was literally the only network show I felt was worth watching. Everything else is just poorly regurgitated versions of other shows that were garbage in the first place. What’s wrong, did we need to clear a slot for another crappy NCIS/CSI/Law and Order-esque crime drama? Or was it the desperate need to see the train wrecks of has been celebrities or talentless amatures dance or sing some more? This is the reason I have premium cable, and why their shows consistantly smoke network shows every year for awards;… Read more »
I hate you, Fox. Get your head out of your ass. American Idol and that related crap is so trite and overdone. A lot of us are tired of it, and just want to tune out of reality by watching something that isn’t…well, reality. You’re slowly and surely robbing us of that opportunity by cancelling all your quality programming. Bob’s Burgers and Family Guy? Really? Not everyone in America is a drooling, lazy imbecile like most of those shows’ viewers. I am so disappointed. Thanks for nothing.
You are soooo right. I will never watch those dumb reality shows on Fox. We are not all teenagers who watch cartoons either. The Good Guys was my favorite show too. Whitford is a hoot.
My husband and I absolutely love The Good Guys. We are so unhappy that Fox dropped it. You had to have a sense of humor to appreciate this show. Now we are stuck with what’s left. Thanks Fox, thanks for ruining our evening!
im really sad atm knowing there;s no S2!!! the show is pure fun and entertaining!!! i was about to introduced the series to my parents overseas but too sad there;s no kicking anymore!! real sad here!!!
