To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

I thought the show was great. The chemistry between the characters was wonderful. From the detectives to the DA to the snitch everyone seemed to click. Now i wish i had kept all the episodes on my DVR!
What a shame! It was very funny and there is absolutely nothing else on Fri evenings worth watching!
Should never have been canceled. Great chemistry between Hanks and Whitford. But mainly, Jenny Wade. ‘Nuf said.
This was one of the best shows on TV and of coarse like other great programs it’s been cancelled. We looked forward to every episode, the actors were so funny and had great chemistry together. We hope the show gets picked up by some cable network so we can have our Good Guys back!!!
R.I.P. The Good Guys…keep on busting those punks!
Quite surprised such a well made series ends so abruptly. Was it the relentless flashbacks that made it unpopular with viewers – or else why did the ratings fall?
We are so disappointed to hear the show has cancelled. Loved the actors and the fun, clever, over-the-top plots. It is nice to have a show with imagination that doesn’t follow all the cookie cutter cop shows out there. Hopefully, a cable network will grab it.
That show was one of a few good shows (if not the only one) to crop up out of the garbage of other shows that have shown up recently in TV history. I’m just sad to see a true gem of a show to die like that.
Gah, I was wanting a second season!! I loved it!
We love that show! We looked forward to watching it (and we don’t watch a lot of
tv shows!) We are super bummed about it being cancelled. We hope someone else
will pick it up.
This was such a great show!!! I’m 66, so out of their target audience, though why they wouldn’t want over 49 year olds watching and buying stuff, I don’t know. The show was funny, never predictable, the acting was great — I hope some other show will partner these two guys!!!
Great show. I wasn’t in the United States during December but I just got the time to catch up on some great shows, and The Good Guys was one of them. Sad to see the show end. But I think the last episode, “Partners”, was great and I think it was a good episode to end the whole thing.
I loved this show!! I am sooo sorry that it is no more. My husband and I really looked forward to it and watched faithfully it in both time slots. We loved the quirkiness.
Too bad. It was a funny, original show. Put it on cable!
Loved the show!!! Loved the chemistry!!!! Sorry to see it end!!!
