Last May, NBC announced that it would be adding two new medical shows. Trauma would begin airing in the Fall and Mercy would come in early 2010. That plan got messed up when production on Parenthood, another new show, was delayed, and Mercy was brought in early to take its place.
With two new medical dramas on the network, many suspected there was going to be one too many. A few months later, one is struggling to survive and the other has been effectively cancelled.
Trauma revolves around a group of first responder paramedics in San Francisco. The high-action series is populated by an ensemble cast that includes Derek Luke, Cliff Curtis, Anastasia Griffith, Kevin Rankin, Aimee Garcia, Billy Lush, Jamey Sheridan, and Taylor Kinney.
The drama has had problems attracting viewers from the beginning. Its premiere only attracted 6.68 million viewers and a 2.2/5 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers sank to 5.36 million and a 1.7/4. The numbers have been rising slowly since then but not by much. Monday’s episode hit a post-premiere high of 5.77 million and a 1.9/5, putting the show in fourth place for the timeslot.
To no surprise, NBC has decided not to order additional episodes of Trauma. While all 13 episodes of the series will be aired, the network won’t be ordering any more. It’s unknown if the cast and crew will be able to give the show any closure by the last episode.
What do you think? Are you disappointed that Trauma is ending or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?
UPDATE: Trauma returning with new episodes.

Why is it always the good ones that get cancelled. Please please please
keep this show going, it is getting better and better every episode!!!
I totally agree that Trauma should have been given a chance…..I really enjoy watching the show, and the characters are pretty good…..I never thought I would like another medical show after ER was cancelled…..this show kinda reminds me of Third Watch which I absolutely enjoyed as well….very disappointed about it being cancelled.
This is a great show! What are you thinking, get rid of Leno instead!!!!
I have really enjoyed this show and am very disappointed it is being cancelled. I find the protrayal of peoples personal lives entertwined with the drama and action in the field is very entertaining and hope NBC changes its mind. They haven’t given it a chance. Wait till the winter months come and more people are at home watching T.V. The ratings will go up. It sure beats all these reality shows………. they are all becoming very old! Since ER was cancelled I was thrilled when a new medical show was created. And the actors are great and believeable.
This show wouldn’t been terrible if nbc didn’t falsely depict fire/ems providers. None of the material was accurate and makes us look bad.
I work as EMS/Fire dispatcher, and even though the entire show is completely misrepresented, it is, (in context as a TV SHOW) entertaining and funny. Beats all the reality TV shows coming out, now if only NBC was no longer allowed to create excellent ideas only to cancel them before playing out.
I’m disappointed that NBC has decided to cancel Trauma. I enjoy Trauma, even though I’m not a part of the EMS Community. There’s the human element that I found attractive about the show. It’s not just about Trauma… it’s about People.
This show is demaning to the FD/EMS community…. I’m glad its off the air or pretty soon the public will expect a bunch of crap that we cannot provide.
man i like this series alot and hope maybe someone else picks it up or they switch it to another night after a while.
This show never should have been telecasted. Absoloutly awful. Such inaccuracies for the EMS/ Fire sevice.
I am getting really sick and tired of NBC cancelling every show I like. These are the only two I watch on that station now aside from Law and Order series. What are they going to do next, cancel the L&O shows too?
This surprises me because I think Trauma is a great show. I always watch it and DVR it each week. It’s much better than some of the other stuff on TV right now and I think that Trauma and Mercy fill the gap that ER left behind. I really wish NBC would re-consider and keep Trauma in the line-up.
When are the ratings people going to learn how to pull ratings from DVR’d shows? Some people just don’t have the time in their evenings to watch these shows live, or prefer to watch shows at their leisure. I wonder if you combine the DVR’d events if the rating would be high enough to keep.
That stupid show Chuck gets a 3rd season, but Trauma gets canceled. Go figure.
Get with technology and figure out how to rate DVR’d events already!
what a shame its ending,it was a nice break from the cop drama shows and the getting old house series.it was nice to see a drama show giving some credit to the life saving heros of the the fire depts, emts.the network is making a huge mistake by cancelling this one………
Trauma was one of few shows I was really enjoying. I’m sorry to see that it’s been dropped.
