Last May, NBC announced that it would be adding two new medical shows. Trauma would begin airing in the Fall and Mercy would come in early 2010. That plan got messed up when production on Parenthood, another new show, was delayed, and Mercy was brought in early to take its place.
With two new medical dramas on the network, many suspected there was going to be one too many. A few months later, one is struggling to survive and the other has been effectively cancelled.
Trauma revolves around a group of first responder paramedics in San Francisco. The high-action series is populated by an ensemble cast that includes Derek Luke, Cliff Curtis, Anastasia Griffith, Kevin Rankin, Aimee Garcia, Billy Lush, Jamey Sheridan, and Taylor Kinney.
The drama has had problems attracting viewers from the beginning. Its premiere only attracted 6.68 million viewers and a 2.2/5 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers sank to 5.36 million and a 1.7/4. The numbers have been rising slowly since then but not by much. Monday’s episode hit a post-premiere high of 5.77 million and a 1.9/5, putting the show in fourth place for the timeslot.
To no surprise, NBC has decided not to order additional episodes of Trauma. While all 13 episodes of the series will be aired, the network won’t be ordering any more. It’s unknown if the cast and crew will be able to give the show any closure by the last episode.
What do you think? Are you disappointed that Trauma is ending or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?
UPDATE: Trauma returning with new episodes.

That is some BS!!! i am an EMT and i been waiting for a show like this. This really sucks!!
NBC has done nothing but anger me this fall. First off, the Jay Leno show has been nothing short of a let-down of some very high expectations. Secondly, why did Southland get cancelled? I loved that show! And now, just as I finally started to really like Trauma, they go and cancel it too. Well, i’d like to give a big F**k you to NBC. They better hope I dont go all Hulk on them.
I as a fellow EMT am extremely dissapointed. Finally they add a very cool tv show displaying all the interesting things EMTs do and experience and then they cancel the show far to soon. I am one to not come to a situation with a problem, yet a solution. My solution is to let the show continue and give it a chance to become popular. The show hasn’t had a chance to hit mainstream yet, its far to new. I say give it a chance to grow, and pay attention closely because it will become a huge, huge hit. There… Read more »
I am very disappointed. We love it and look forward to watching it every Monday evening. I guess they are going to replace it with some stupid reality show. Give me a break and keep Tramau and cancell Wife Swap. Please.
i am really disapointed that NBC is cancelling Trauma. When i was younger i used to watch Emergency on TV land, which is almost the same as Trauma, which is why i love it. This was the only show that i looked forward to on monday and now its cancelled. we still have a couple of weeks until it is over, you could by each episode including the pilot on itunes, i already have everything up to last nights airing. i would purchase them on itunes know because i dont think itunes would have the full episodes up much longer… Read more »
I’m really disappointed in NBC. They aren’t even giving Trauma a fighting chance. I love watching this show and can’t wait to see what happens each week, both with the character development and the different situations that arise. I hope the network gives it a chance, otherwise it will be the typical NBC cancel-a-great-show-and-play-it-safe routine.
I am SOOOO disappointed!! I absolutely love Trauma, I am completely hooked and can’t wait until the next show and then I hear it’s being cancelled. With all of the stupid reality tv shows that are on tv it was so nice to have a drama with some actual substance. What is NBC thinking?? Great Cast, Great Script, I just can’t believe they are taking it off the air. I agree with one of the comments above, cancel that stupid “Heroes” show and leave this one on the air PLEASE!!
I’m sad. “Trauma” is a GREAT show. The plots for every show develop every character and each episode you can see how everyone evolves and grows. It has all the best elements of a prime time soap opera and can get you hooked quick. You don’t even have to watch every episode from the beginning to catch on. What is NBC thinking? They put Leno in a prime slot and bump off promising shows like “Southland.” I say cancel “Heroes” instead (Butterfly man might as well ink Sylar jumping a shark on that Carnival *****).
I have really enjoyed Trauma this season. I am very tired of all the reality shows and am enjoying the change. The action is great and the connections with the actors is fun to watch. I hope they will reconsider and let it continue.
Yes I am VERY DISAPPOINTED in the cancellation of Trauma, I could not wait until Monday at 9:00 to sit in front of my TV to watch the show. Trauma is a way better show then Mercy!!!!!! I love all the actors and actress on Trauma and it show what our EMT have to deal with not only professional but personal. If they don’t bring back Trauma I will never watch NBC station again!!!!! Finally a show to sit down to watch and you decide to cancel, VERY BAD on your part, I hope others write in to tell you… Read more »
I am extremely disappointed. I have watched Trauma and Mercy and Trauma is by far a better show. I really wish I could stay with a show that I like, like the old days when there was loyalty from the networks. What happened to giving a show a decent chance? Yes, I am very DISAPPOINTED with the loss of the show and with NBC.
Sad to see it go to the waste side. I really liked it.
I am very disappointed that the show has been cancelled.
There are many shows that depicts the lives of professionals differently then are actually are. You think Dr are all like Dr House? Hello!! They would have been fired if they pulled even 1/8 of the stuff he does. How about the nurses in many TV shows. Im a nurse and some of the things they have nurses do, would never happen in the real world. The TV show is for entertainment! I think its great and it reminds me (and apparently others) of Third Watch. I loved Third Watch and now I love Trauma. Bottom line its a great… Read more »
i was really getting into this show. i’m really sad that it’s not being given a full chance. i know there are a lot of medical dramas on the air, i get it. this season alone, we’ve got Trauma, Mercy and Three Rivers. my favorite was Trauma. and yeah, ok.. i love Three Rivers because i’ve missed Katherine Moennig since The L Word ended.
