Fans of NBC’s Trauma series have had a season of ups and downs. The TV show got off to a poor start in the ratings and then was essentially cancelled when NBC decided not to purchase any episodes beyond the initial 13 installments. Later, because the peacock network needed additional original programming, they kept it in production and ordered an additional seven episodes.
Unfortunately, the show’s ratings got worse and worse and NBC later cut the final episode order to 18 installments. Last night’s was the last. Looking at the ratings, it’s hard to imagine that NBC would consider ordering another season of Trauma.
Still, one of the show’s star’s, Cliff Curtis (Rabbit), remains hopeful that Trauma will be back for year two and refused to let the show’s prospects influence his work. He recently spoke to USAWeekend and here’s a portion of that conversation…
Have you got any word on if Trauma will get a second season?
We’re still in the mix despite all reports of being cancelled. I’m still contracted till May 17, which will be the day I find out what I’m doing. They haven’t cut me loose to go and take first position on any other projects. We’re all watching.Would your first choice be to have another year of Rabbit?
I love Rabbit as a character, he’s fantastic. We can get better – we’ve come a long way and we started off with a very broad concept: Basically taking a female-skewed audience of a genre show, a medical show, and skewing it toward the male audience. The pendulum swang a little too far in that direction, we’re pulling it back the other way, and we’re getting really good. That must have been pretty disheartening to hear the rumors in the fall of Trauma being cancelled and left for dead.
I skipped over all of that because I didn’t want to focus on it. That is not going to help me enjoy my work and is not going to help enjoy my life. Rabbit as a character is somebody who despite all of his flaws and all the tragedy happening around him, he’s just a fun guy in a lot of ways. He’s not the brightest guy at times – he’s got room to grow in terms of how he approaches life, and that’s what keeps me interested in him as an actor. But I just really love his enthusiasm for life. I really admire people who are clear about what they love, and they just go for it. That’s really helped me as an actor to think, “You know, I’m gonna approach it with the same attitude.” People can say what they say. I’m loving my job, loving my work, love the people around me, and I’m going to come to work every day and have the best time I can.
What do you think? Do you think Trauma has a chance at returning? If it is cancelled, would you like to see Curtis (or even “Rabbit”) to land on another series?

This show is best thing since Third Watch and It’s the best medical show on right now (as good as “Trauma in the E.R.” on Discovery Health). It also beats ‘Mercy” hands down. Please do not cancel this show. Good medical shows are hard to come by.
Somebody should pick up Trauma. Maybe TNT or USA. Rabbit is a fabulous character and Cliff is such a good actor. I am keeping my fingers crossed for some good news about this show. It is such a different concept. Medical show, Emergency crew, helicopters, love interests, the works. We need this show.
I hope, hope, HOPE that NBC can see their way clear to keep Trauma. It’s the best medical show on right now (as good as “Trauma in the E.R.” on Discovery Health).
What can we do to get it renewed?
My wife and I look forward to this show every Monday evening….we agree that Trauma
focuses on the day in and day out experiences of those in this field…..it displays the type
of committment, dedication and proffessionalism that is lived out 24/7 in our communities throughtout this country….it’s about time we start having positive shows about first responders in law enforcement, fire and emergency medical response and get rid of those programs that revell in bring out the worst in people in these proffessions. NBC needs to give Trauma a second season. Last Monday’s show finished rather disappointingly.
i love this show. the characters are so amazing. boone and tyler make me laugh. nancy makes me yearn. rabbit makes me frustrated. glen makes me feel his pain. god i love them. i hope that this show gets another season….and if nbc passes it up, i hope another network sees it’s potential and will pick it up. however….like the person above, the only shows i watch on nbc are trauma and parenthood (which i heart even more).
I started out really liking greys anatomy, but the story has been awful lately and has made me look else where for new shows. I absolutely looooove trauma. I wasn’t sure about it at first and didnt catch it every week, but lately i haven’t missed an episode. I love tyler and rabbit in the show. But most importantly, I love that the show doesn’t just focus on relationships. Obviously there is some in there which there should be to build the characters up, but it actually focuses on the medicine part of the show. It is truly a medicine… Read more »
Parenthood has already been renewed for next season.
i’m so happy to hear that!
Trauma is a show that is perhaps too realistic for some romantics but having served in the profession of assisting my fellow man in the time when they need help and depicting the diverse charcters as well as the situtations gives you an alternative to the cookie cutter shows of the other networks. It’s what i always expect from NBC and as i still work a varied schedule i do record the show. However i will make it a point to leave the TV tuned to that channel when i am not available to view. A waste of our resources… Read more »
It’s just a shame that such a great drama had such poor ratings is in the verge of being cancelled Rabbitt was a pretty good guy when he wanted to be but he has to tone down on his attitude. I am crosssing my fingers for a second season.
I m totally 50/50. I could so see it go either way. On one hand networks like to cancel good shows on the other I might have done just good enough for them to order a second season and let it build. And for people that didn’t watch it the first season maybe the network could show reruns or atleast advertise the release of the first season DVD. So possibly the show could build. Just look at E.R. 15 seasons long, granted thats not Law & Order but still. Just take a chance will ya NBC????? As far as Curtis… Read more »
PS- NBC did little of nothing to promote this show. If more people knew about it I’m sure they would watch. Not much competition for that type of dramatic show in that time slot.
I really enjoy Trauma and I hope it is not cancelled. I especially enjoy Cliff Curtis as Rabbit-such a great actor playing a wonderfully dynamic character. Last night’s episode was such a cliff hanger; no fair to those of us who truly love the show and have followed it all season. I need to know what happens with Rabbit and Nancy!!! Please NBC bring it back!
I sure hope they decide to run Trauma for a second season. It’s my favorite show. It’s action packed and there’s always something new. Sure they might do CPR wrong on the show, but I’ve never seen a TV show where they do it right. There’s a lot of potential in this show. NBC should keep running Trauma to see where this potential leads.
This show is best thing since Third Watch and ER I’m watching in ireland thanks to sky tv’s million channels and i’m hooked !
Cliff Curtis just has to stay on my TV he is a brilliant actor
(Rabbit is my new Doug Ross!)
I love this show. I really wish that NBC would take the plunge and give it another season.
Dedicate a little effprt, keep the show in one place, and try a little advertising. The characters are good and the action is really great.
Trauma deserves a second season!! I am in the medical field and find this to be one of the best and most believable medical dramas made. It has a great mix of interesting characters who get better with every episode. Griffith and Curtis are outstanding actors. I want to know what happens to them all! So much better than reality tv crap. NBC don’t make a mistake and let this one get away. Lots of us DVR the show so the numbers of viewers aren’t reflected in the ratings. The olympic break also messed up the continuity of the show… Read more »
