Going into the fall season, CBS’ Vegas series was one of the new TV shows with the most buzz. Many people were expecting it to be one of the hits of the season. Has it measured up? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
Airing on Tuesday nights, Vegas takes place in the Las Vegas of the 1960s and revolves around Sheriff Ralph Lamb (Dennis Quaid), a former rancher, and his clashes with Vincent Savino (Michael Chiklis), a Chicago mobster who moved west to set up his operation. Others in the cast include Carrie-Anne Moss, Taylor Handley, Sarah Jones, and Jason O’Mara.
The show debuted back on September 25th to a 2.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 14.85 million total viewers. While the viewership was strong, CBS was likely expecting a much better demo number — especially considering the show’s high-profile talent, positive reviews, and the show having a strong lead-in like NCIS: Los Angeles.
In week two, the ratings dropped 20%, to a 2.0 rating with 12.11 million. In week four, they dropped another 20%, to a 1.6 rating with 10.8 million.
The numbers have remained fairly steady since then and the 15 episodes that have aired thus far have averaged a 1.7 demo rating with 10.9 million viewers.
While that demo might be enough for a show on NBC, it’s not likely good enough for CBS. Right now, Vegas is one of the network’s lowest-rated weekday series in the demographic which advertisers favor. Vegas has a lot of total viewers but so do many other CBS shows.
Last season, Unforgettable occupied the same timeslot and performed better than Vegas — averaging a 2.3 demo rating and 11.3 million viewers. It was cancelled.
The network ended up making a deal with Sony TV to bring Unforgettable back for a short season this summer and both sides likely made some financial concessions to make that happen. Word is that most of the supporting castmembers have been dropped. A deal like that is not likely to happen with Vegas.
Unless the ratings start to climb, it doesn’t look very likely that Vegas will be back for a second season.
On the positive side, the series will be back on March 19th and there are seven new episodes yet to come.
What do you think? Do you think CBS should cancel Vegas to make way for a new show? Or, should they renew Quaid and company for a second season? If you were running the network, would you change anything try to attract higher ratings?
Vegas is great show with a great cast.CBS is making a huge mistake and CBS please give Vegas another chance.
I love the show. I sure hope that it continues for a few more seasons.
Also, if the numbers aren’t good enough for CBS but good enough for NBC then give it to NBC.
I agree Bobby… I also think if it does not make it.. Make it a movie, besides they did do casino and goodfellas…. 🙂
leave this show on . if you want to remove shows , remove one of the ncis shows . if this show is not on cbs , i will peobably drop cbs ! leave vegas just as it is .
Please keep Vegas. I love the story line and the clothes and the cars and the culture of that period are great to watch.
Keep VEGAS. This is one of the best shows on TV. The period costumes, cars and scenery are excellent. The actors fit their parts superbly. The plots are exciting. The only correct answer is to continue the VEGAS series!
Vegas is a great entertaining show with super actors–hope it isn’t cancelled-its just too good not to be renewed. CBS can well afford to give this great show time to grow an audience.
I don’t know one person watching the show that doesn’t love it!CBS would be making a huge mistake not renewing this show!Vegas has a wonderful story line, excellent actors, and totally entertaining!!!
I agree 🙂
I liked the first three or four episodes, but I don’t think the writers are handling two or three sub-plots per week very well. The dialogue can be corny and unbelievable. I’d give the show a 6 on a 0-10 scale. Disappointed.
Love the show Vegas! Don’t let the network cancel it. Hopefully changing its day and time slot will entice additional viewers.
Vegas is a well-written show that should definitely be renewed for a second season. I am so sick of all the reality shows. Vegas makes for fun and interesting entertainment. Please give viewers a chance to enjoy this show for another season.
This is my favorite show I hope they don’t cancel on excited every week to see it, so original
This is an incredibly exciting show with a stellar cast! Please do NOT cancel this fabulous show. We hope it continues for many more seasons! We live in Las Vegas and love the show VEGAS!
Totally agree
This show has class and is a definite keeper. Great cast & excellent scripts.
Vegas is one of the most unique and refreshing shows on television right now. Different from other shows. It kills me that they worry so much about the people in their 20’s and 30’s. I know of very few in that age demo who watch much Network TV anyway. Why don’t they focus on the age groups who do. Vegas is a great show! Great actors, acting and storyline. It’s fun to see how Vegas might have been when it first started
this is a hot show. CBS should not cancel
