CBS has long had a problem finding the right sitcom to round out their Monday night line-up. Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, and The Big Bang Theory work well but the network needs a solid fourth player. As this season began, it looked like Accidentally on Purpose just might be the one. No longer. It’s been cancelled.
Accidentally on Purpose revolves around thirty-something Billie Chase (Jenna Elfman) after she breaks up with her boyfriend/boss (Grant Show). She has a one-night fling with a much younger man, Zack (Jon Foster), and becomes pregnant. Billie ultimately decides to keep both the baby and the guy. The series also features Lennon Parham, Nicolas Wright, Ashley Jensen, and Pooch Hall.
The TV show got off to a pretty good start with a 3.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 8.91 million viewers. On Monday nights, the first 15 episodes ended up averaging a 3.1 in the demo and 8.23 million viewers. That’s actually quite good but the network has very high expectations because the TV show is surrounded by their very popular comedies. The real test is to see how well the series will perform on another night.
After a hiatus, CBS brought Accidentally on Purpose to Wednesday nights. With The New Adventures of Old Christine as a lead-in, the ratings fell like a rock. The three original episodes averaged a 1.8 in the key demo and 5.72 million viewers. If there was any hope for the series, these numbers dashed them.
CBS has now confirmed that the sitcom has been cancelled and will not be returning for season two. CBS can afford to be picky in what sitcoms it keeps and has also cancelled Gary Unmarried after two seasons and Old Christine after five.
Fortunately, the network aired all 18 episodes of Accidentally on Purpose and viewers got to see Billie give birth. Unfortunately, they won’t get to see how she and Zack cope as new parents.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Accidentally on Purpose has been cancelled or did CBS make the right choice?

I LOVE THE SHOW SO MUCH. WHYYYY
Very disapointed the show was cancelled!!!! I would love to see more seasons the comedy was quick witted and kept me laughing. Great concept and great choice of cast! Please bring it back!!
I loved the show it was funny and witty! It was the only thing that I ever watched on CBS I feel that it would have been a great success of a show if they just gave it a chance. These big tv companies think they can be picky? why not let the public decide what they want to watch.
Loved it and want it back!!!!!
I agree !!
I LOVED the show!!!!! Please bring the show back!!!!!!!!
i have been looking for the show on demand i watched the show every week and was wondering when the new season would start this sucks big time
I am really disapointed that they are not bringing this show back for season 2!
I have to agree with Steven on this one.. You really can’t get into any shows these days, without the worry that one day it will just disappear. Its really irritating, and I can honestly see myself NOT watching anything new in the future because of it. I lost 3-4 shows from last season, one of which was a favorite. Then have already lost two brand new ones this season, just after two episodes! How do two weeks of eposides tell the so quickly that it will not be successful?? i dont get it. I really like this show last… Read more »
This was an AMAZING show, is there a chance they might bring it back?
I am also upset that this series was cancelled. My boyfriend and I make a sport of DVRing our shows, and watching our favorite comedies together when we have time together. We really liked this one. Jenna Elfman is great in this series, and CBS definitely should’ve given it another season. I wanted to see what would happen, and I am tired of worrying about being invested in a show and having it “under-perform” so it is cancelled. Thanks CBS. This was a lot better than some of your alternatives. Gary Unmarried and New Adventures of Old Christine were never… Read more »
I am soooooo sick of getting excited about a tv show and then it gets cancelled. I loved, loved, loved this show. I guess CBS does not want me to watch their network. This was the ONLY show I watched on this network. Bye, bye CBS…
cbs needs to remove thier heads from a specific place after cancling that outrageously funny show. the cast was amazing, they all had good comedic cemisty jenna is sooo funny! they kept me locked in, i watched every episode sometimes twice on demand .What a sad day in telivision……. nothing else they chose to replace compares.. i definatly think it could have reached that “friends” statis…
I loved the show! I watched it all the time on Channel 4OD cos I worked the nights it aired. Please bring it back! it was great! Complete laugh out loud sitcom!!!!!
I loved the show. It was witty and funny and it was refreshing when most of the other comedies on Monday night (HIMYM and 21/2 men) are getting a little jaded. Not a smart move from CBS.
I’m getting pretty fed up with the networks. They have the good sense to purchase some really great shows, people invest time and energy in getting hooked on them, we make them successful, but then, if they aren’t successful ENOUGH, the networks pull the plug. Considering that most people have DVRs, just put them on at another time — even the middle of the night, or stream them on the internet! It shows a complete lack of respect for the viewing audience.
