Right on schedule, CBS has decided to ditch their new Friday night TV series, CHAOS, after just a few weeks on the air. The show stumbled in the ratings right from the start and never recovered. It’s no longer on the air but is it cancelled?
A dramatic comedy, CHAOS follows a small group of CIA misfit spies who make up the Clandestine Administration and Oversight Services (CAOS). In addition to taking on threats to national security, they also must take on redtape and typical government bureaucracy. The TV series stars Freddy Rodriguez, Eric Close, James Murray, Tim Blake Nelson, Carmen Ejogo, Christina Cole, and Kurtwood Smith.
As detailed here, CHAOS debuted to a horrible 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.53 million viewers. That was quite a bit lower than the season average of Medium, a series that CBS cancelled because of poor ratings.
In the second week, CHAOS fell even lower to a 0.9 rating in the demo and 5.73 million viewers. Last Friday night, bumped up ever so slightly in the demo, to a 1.0 rating and 5.683 million. Unfortunately, that was far from enough of a gain to save the TV series.
CBS has pulled CHAOS from the schedule effective immediately. This week, a rerun of CSI: NY will fill the timeshot — and probably get better ratings. Next week, the previously scheduled The Royal Wedding: Modern Majesty will air. Then, beginning on May 6th, new episodes of Flashpoint will take over.
The network has 10 episodes of CHAOS left sitting on the shelf. CBS hasn’t said if there are any plans to release the unaired installments. Though CHAOS hasn’t been officially cancelled yet, there’s no way that they’ll be renewing it for a second season.
UPDATE: A statement from CBS indicates that the show will return to the schedule at some point in the future.
What do you think? Why did the TV show do so poorly, even by Friday night standards? Will you miss CHAOS?

I love this show. Good writing. Love the actors. What is the matter with the execs. Can’t they give a show a chance to get a following. I hate all this getting to know the characters and then they are gone!
YES I WILL MISS THE Show CHAOS it was my replacement for smallvile ending and it wasnt the same old chessy stuff that is called “spy show” it had feel of ALIAS and UNDERCOVERS which i liked another show that got pull but by nbc.
ive notice CHAOS HAS BEEN RUNNING ON SATURDAY NITE AT 7 C , So im going to WATCH Till there no more
Love love LOVE this show. I saw a few short ads before the premiere (that’s why I watched). I loved it. Then It gets cancelled and remaining episodes are shown out of order on another night?!?
Sell it to USA! I won’t even need my remote. I can enjoy my quirky offbeat shows (and buy the DVDs) and CBS can do another show for the senior set.
thats what got me interested in the show was that commercials
I absolutely love the show! CHAOS has a wonderful balance of comedy and drama. It’s exactly what people look for in a good show, and CHAOS has mastered it. I believe that those statistics are unfair. Please, I beg of you, do not cancel this show for the sake of those who love it! There are people out there who watch it like me and my family who watch it and enjoy it. Isn’t that enough? It should be. If this great show has to be cancelled then I beg another station to take on this awesome show. If this… Read more »
f#$k me i was really getting into this show but dont suprise me another network cancelled the event to all about the $$$$ huh never about how good a show is shame on you cbs
ya i agree with you the network take off good show and last the crapy ones on
It seems I am always attracted to shows that have short-lived airings. CHAOS is witty, fast-paced, cleverly written, and incorporates humor, intrigue, and action. CBS had me ‘locked in’ on Friday nights. I can’t believe they pulled it after only 3 shows. It was not heavily supported with ads like Blue Bloods. I hope they reconsider airing it again in the fall!
I will surely miss it. I love the quirky combination of characters. There aren’t enough good, light hearted shows like it on the air. It reminds me of the old Get Smart tv shows.
Really enjoy the show, Chaos. I think the cast is incredible, and the writing is very good. Hope they reconsider this and give it more of a chance.
Loved the show!
They showed a new eposide of choas today at 8:00pm.
Of course, CBS has decided to cancel CHOAS – it is clever, entertaining, great show; CBS doesn’t even “do” good shows much less great shows! I’m writing USA and TNT today asking them to pick it up.
I loved it! It showed an off-beat, quirky, can-do, what-red-tape? team of spies. I especially enjoyed Tim Nelson (gentle, innocent, not-quite-bright Delmar of “Oh, Brother”) as Casey the ‘human killing machine.’ CBS is stupid, stupid, stupid. Remember when they yanked Moonlight which had the best heartthrob vampire ever and Pushing Daisies which was pure eye candy?

Various sources that I looked at said that CHAOS was cancelled. Was it just cancelled or did CBS pull it and didn’t cancel CHAOS?
Yes I will miss it. The chemistry is good for so many main chracters. NBC should take it. It would go nicely with ” CHUCK ” fans. They have a sense of humor over there @ NBC. CBS only cares about #’s not viewers. Don’t monkey with time slots and people will follow. Honestly, CBS has too many irons going at once. Either they want to go with short line idiot comedy ” predictable” or old tired worn out done before ‘drama’. Actors should not get their hopes up when they find out CBS will carry their piolet. But what… Read more »
The data they use to decide what shows should be kept is flawed! Shows place on Friday night should have much lower standards. The show is Excellent like tons of others that have been cancelled in recent years. I do not like CSI, NCIS, etc they are all the same. I always like the shows that are a little bit or even a lot different. No Ordinary Family, and many others I will miss very much along with CHAOS. At least we still have Leverage, Burn Notice, and the rest of the great summer shows to watch along with the… Read more »
