After lots of ups and downs in the ratings, ABC has decided that the ride is over for Eli Stone. They’re not ordering any additional episodes for the drama, essentially cancelling the TV show.
Eli Stone follows a handsome attorney (Jonny Lee Miller) with an ideal life and promising future. He works for the law firm owned by prestigious attorney Jordan Wethersby (Victor Garber) and is engaged to Jordan’s daughter, Taylor (Natasha Henstridge). Eli’s life radically changes when he starts to experience strange hallucinations. Is he a prophet or sick? With the help of his brother Nathan (Matt Letscher) and an acupuncturist, Dr. Chen (James Saito), Eli learns the truth about his condition and starts to understand his new life. Other series performers include Loretta Devine, Sam Jaeger, Julie Gonzalo, Jason Winston George, and Tom Amandes.
Stone debuted in January 2008 as a midseason replacement series on ABC. The premiere attracted 11.83 million viewers and a 4.2/12 rating /share in the 18-49 demographic. The second episode fell to 9.38 million and a 3.6/10. The ratings continued to fall after that, hitting a series low of 5.88 million and a 1.6/4 rating/share towards the end of the season. It was a hit with some viewers and critics so ABC decided to stick with the series and renewed it for a second season of 13 episodes.
Season two debuted on October 14th and the numbers were higher than they had been at the end of the previous season — mainly thanks to its Dancing with the Stars lead-in. The season started with a high of 8.82 million viewers and a 2.3/6 rating/share in the demographic. The numbers have been sinking ever since and Tuesday’s episode fell to 6.36 million and a 1.6/4. Those figures look even worse when you consider that Dancing attracted 17.59 million viewers. That means that over 11 million viewers would rather change the channel than watch Stone. Consistently losing a large percentage of its lead-in audience is ultimately what’s killed the show about the attorney with visions.

ABC has decided against ordering any additional episodes of Eli Stone. Though they are not calling it a cancellation, there is little to no chance that the network will ever revive the show. The cast and crew are currently finishing up their 13 episode order and it’s not known if producers will try to give the show any sense of closure. Executive producers Marc Guggenheim, Greg Berlanti, and David Petrarca broke the news to the cast and crew earlier today.
For now, the series remains on the network’s schedule. If ABC pulls Stone before the remaining eight episodes have aired, the network will likely air them at a later date, post them online or, at the very least release a season two DVD set. Stay tuned!
As a private investigator, I love to watch Eli Stone. A very smart lawyer with great story lines, it is true entertainment. Boston Legal, on the other hand, started out good, but as the seasons have progressed have gotten way too political. Eli Stone, though, gives us that extra motivation to do what is right, and often encourages professionals in the legal industry to represent those who truly can not afford it.
ABC, you are making a HUGE mistake if you cancel this series.
I love Eli Stone. It is the the show I can’t wait to come on each week. It is well written and very entertaining. Please do not cancel this show.
Please do not cancel Eli Stone. I love this show, it’s light hearted, funny and very entertaining, I can’t believe that ABC is doing this AGAIN. First was Commander in Chief, canceled in the second season, then Big Shots canceled after the first season, why does ABC cancel all the good shows but keeps the crap running like “Brothers & Sisters”
I’m tired of ABC canceling everything, can’t you cancel one of the 20 CSI shows and keep Eli Stone?? or cut down on Reality Shows??
PLEASE DON’T CANCEL ELI STONE!!!!!
DON’T CANCEL ELI STONE!!!!!
I’ve been so DISAPPOINTED with the networks cancellation of truly entertaining and SMART programming. Eli is one of the few shows I really enjoy and look forward to each week. There is so much crap on TV these days… we need some alternatives, and Eli Stone is one of them. Be strategic! Don’t cancel Eli.
This is the type of show that Walt Disney Would have loved. Light comedy with
serious over tones of doing whats right regardless of cost, something ABC has
apparentlly forgotten. Please reconsider this action and think about the morality
this show offers its viewers!
I already sent an email reminding them of their history of great shows cancelled within one to two seasons (Sports Night – My So Called Life). ABC is notorious for this, and it isn’t like they have a bunch of great shows on the air now…According to Jim anyone. I just thank heaven for NBC and CBS with great shows given opportunities to thrive in the right time slots. (Criminal Minds, My Name is Earl). It is sad that the neilsons control everything, and how do they track DVR/Tivo results?
PLEASE don’t cancel Eli Stone! All the good family shows are cancelled while the sleezy reality shows go on and on. There is so little suitable for children and teens (and adults who don’t like near pornography, violence and gruesome crime stories). This is a wonderfully creative show that is totally different and it appeals to those of us with some amount of taste and intelligence. Why are we being ignored while the brainless Big Brother watchers get to watch that trash? Don’t cancel Eli Stone – PLEASE!!
I agree with above posts, I love this show. Unfortunately it aired on the same time slot that my then favorite show House was on on Tuesdays. I recently rented the whole first season and couldn’t stop watching it til it was done. The end of the first season was such a cliffhanger than when I learned it was “cancelled” I was angry! Needless to say when I looked into it I learned that there were still some episodes left that had already been made, but the eventual demise still upsets me. It’s too bad quality shows get the can… Read more »
My family loves this show!! ABC needs to really rethink canceling Eli Stone. It is so different from all the other shows on the air now and before. This show has great messages and even though, it is a TV show it gives us hope every week that just possibly we can learn something from Eli, and what he has gone through to be a better person. I am so sick and tired of all the CSI shows, and people being murdered on prime time. We usually watch ABC ,however, if you take off Eli Stone I will also do… Read more »
Best all around show and good for all of the family. I thought ABC was a family friendly channel. We need more shows like Eli Stone. Please don’t air anymore reality shows!
I just started watching Eli Stone this fall-after catching up on the first season on DVD-it
omg…..What the FxXX is the ABC doing? Why cancel Eli stone? i love this drama very much….FXXX abc..
ABC has made some big mistakes recently by cancelling shows that have loyal followers like Eli Stone, October Road, and Boston Legal. These were my three favorite shows on television. Why should I invest any time in the future in ABC’s programming when they are so short-sighted that they pull great programs after only one season. I’ll just say “no” to ABC.
first Boston Legal, now Eli Stone, Those were about the only time I turned on ABC…I am sick and tired of the mind numbingly STUPID reality shows, and garbage like “Pushing up Daisies” that ABC puts on, yuck yuck yuck…..Life on Mars is about the only thing left and I’m not sure I’ll keep to it now…..
ABC…take LOST and shove up your….. DVR. The boycott begins!
