Last summer, CBS found ratings success with new series Under the Dome. This summer, they introduced Extant, a sci-fi series starring Halle Berry. Has it been a hit as well? Will the series be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled instead?
On Extant, astronaut Molly Woods (Berry) returns to Earth after a year-long solo mission in outer space. Her reunion with her family is thrown into turmoil when it’s learned that she’s pregnant. Others in the cast include Goran Visnjic, Pierce Gagnon, Hiroyuki Sanada, Camryn Manheim, Grace Gummer, and Michael O’Neill.
Debuting on July 9th, the series got off to a decent start and attracted a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.58 million viewers. In week two, the ratings saw a moderate decline which is not unexpected for a new series. Unfortunately, the numbers took a big dip in week three.

The ratings seem to have now leveled off and the show consistently draws a 1.0 rating in the demo with under six million viewers. Those are hardly impressive numbers for an expensive show with a movie star as the lead.
Last year’s Under the Dome was profitable for CBS even before the series aired, thanks to a deal with Amazon and others. CBS has a streaming deal with Amazon for Extant but it’s unclear if that will be enough to get this particular show a second season renewal.
Series creator Mickey Fisher says that he has big plans for season two but has assured fans of a satisfying finale if the show is cancelled. He believes the series has a 50/50 chance.
What do you think? Do you like the Extant TV show? Do you think it should be renewed for a second season or is one season enough?
10/9 update: Extant has been renewed for a second season CBS.
I love science fiction but this show is just rehashed old plots with nothing new to add. Let the show go to make room for something fresh.
My family enjoys watching this show more than any we have watched in years. We actually set that time aside each week as our time to watch the show and talk about what might happen next. I believe Mickey Fisher has done an awesome job with this series. There have been so many amazing twists that only great minds such as this group of producers could come up with. I would surely expect CBS to renew, and if not hopefully another network would buy the rights.
Husband & I aren’t big Sci-fi people but we have really e noted watching. Look forward to watching the show every Wednesday night. Really hope they get a second season.
Good show!! Keep it !
I see the 11 people that watched it want it renewed.
I love the series. I want a second season.
Absolutely give it a second season!!
I think its an excellent series. Please dont cancel.
Show is top NOTCH! Hubby n I love it. But how do watch the rest. Our channel 19 is cancelled!!! Directv!
Watch entire series on Amazon Prime, or on CBS’ TV.com, or bribe one of your neighbors. Show definitely needs to be renewed, after all, it is Halle and Spielberg, and show is definitel better than The Dome. Sort of like watching Heinz Ketchup come out of the bottle — anticipation. We need to see where the story goes, which is difficult since everyone has died.
They better bring it back so we will know what happens to this boy(???). We haven’t even seen him yet, just watched him walk away………
I think the show is excellent and has gained a wonderful momentum. Yes please to a season 2, and beyond!
Yes please continue with another season of Extant
I really enjoy the show. I think it”s great summer replacement. I hope it doesn’t”t get cancelled.
Keep it going. Love it!!!
Started out too slow! It is actually an excellent series and one of the best sci-fi stories I have seen in quite some time. I love sci-fi but most productions in recent years have simply not been credible with either story lines or visuals. This series didn’t really start getting exciting until about episode 6 -7 or whenever it was it started talking “offspring”. I also question the interracial component for prime time. America as a whole is STILL not as liberal as the hollywood people.
Interracial ? Get a grip. Captain Kirk kissed Uhura almost 50 years ago.
Somehow, America elected the son of an interracial couple as President.
Shame on you.
My comments were not intended to be a social commentary but rather an analysis as to why such an excellent sci-fi program does not have better ratings. I was merely looking at “possible” reasons.
I really think Science Fiction viewers can handle interracial Edd Morton. Star Trek has been plugging it for around 50 years. William Riker off Next Generation was after everything with or without a tail and Kirk is still trying to make it with everything that might be a female of some species and especially if its green. Personally, I think the show took to many episodes of dragging along to develop, and the cast mix isn’t optimal, but it will probably do alright with another season if the writing is good and keep a solid plot going that doesn’t go… Read more »
Oh come on Edd. It sounds to me that you are the one that isn’t ready for the ‘interracial component’. You can’t hide that. You wouldn’t have said it if it were otherwise. And you don’t give our society enough credit. This is a non-issue Edd. Get over it. It has nothing to do with the story line – as it should be. I love this show. Very good actors, story is developing well. I am truly hoping that this show doesn’t get cancelled like Dracula did on NBC. NBC made a big mistake. They dropped this excellent show and… Read more »
