There won’t be a third season of Extant but this isn’t the end of Halle Berry’s relationship with CBS. The summer series has been cancelled but Berry is now executive producing a legal drama that’s in development for the network.
Extant, began when astronaut Molly Woods (Halle Berry) returned to Earth after a year-long solo mission in outer space. Her reunion with her family is thrown into turmoil when it’s learned that she’s pregnant. For season two, the cast includes Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Pierce Gagnon, Grace Gummer, and David Morrissey.
The first season of Extant underperformed for the network and averaged a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.15 million viewers. They brought it back but a lot of changes were made to the series. Unfortunately, they didn’t seem to help. The second season, which concluded last month, averaged a 0.7 in the demo with 4.70 million.
Despite the big declines in the ratings, there was talk of moving forward with a third season, mostly because of Berry’s star power. Ultimately the decision was made to end the show.
“I am so proud of what we accomplished on Extant,” said Berry. “This season seemed such a natural place to end Molly’s journey that I, along with CBS, felt it best served the story to leave it there. It was my first foray into episodic television, and I’m excited to continue my relationship with CBS, producing more compelling stories through my 606 Films production banner.”
In a statement, CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller, said, “CBS, Halle Berry and the producers have decided to conclude the ‘Extant’ story after last season’s exciting and fitting conclusion. Extant’ played an important role in expanding CBS’s lineup of original scripted programming in the summer. We are proud of the show’s success on the network, as well as its popularity on Amazon Prime Video. We also want to thank the incomparable Halle Berry for her commitment and support for the series, and look forward to working with her on our next project together.”
That next project is called Legalease and will center on a biracial lawyer from Chicago who follows a case to New Orleans. She ends up partnering with a good ol’ boy attorney while working in a biased justice system. It’s unclear if Berry will star in the new show or stay behind-the-scenes.
What do you think? Did you like the Extant TV show? Do you think that it should have been cancelled or renewed for a third season? Which season did you prefer?
As usual there is no reason to get invested in any new series because the network never follows through. Might as well wait till these shows hit season three or four before getting settled in. What a shame.
Sorry to learn Extant won’t be coming back. I was looking forward to may seasons of this excellent series.
I am really upset that they canceled Extant!!! I really enjoyed the show and couldn’t wait for it to come on every week. It kept me on the edge of my chair every week. I really liked all the characters. I should have know they would cancel it. They never leave the shows I like on!!! I’ve decided I’m not going to get involved in any new shows cause they always get cancelled!!! Anymore they have very little interesting new shows. I hate 99% of the reality shows and am sick of them. I pay a fortune to watch mainly… Read more »
Why????? I love that serie!! I hope the 3rd season, only one season more!!! Nae!!!!!
Liked the show extant. Not sorry to see it end. Nowhere for story to go. I would love to see Halle berry in another series with her new love interest detective from extant.
I liked him a lot.
MAKE A SHOW WITH A REAL Humanic robots LIKE bonic BOY
bionic…
Intelligent science fiction doesn’t typically have a long iifespan on commercial television. I liked the show but it did feel like it was getting ready to end and, in one of the rare instances of a show being dropped, the final show did not end on a cliffhanger and pretty much closed out the story nicely. It was interesting to watch the progressive switch from the aliens being the perceived and implied threat in Season 1 and the first part of Season 2 to the evolving Humanic robots becoming the threat in Season 2. Once the real big bad (AI)… Read more »
I liked the show a lot sorry it has been canceled
Loved the series!!! So sorry to hear it has been canceled:(
This show really went off the rails in the second season. Just one ridiculous plot twist after the other. I stopped watching it a few episodes in, then tuned in to the finale in the hopes of seeing Molly’s husband alive and well, but nope, they really did do away with him.
Wow!! I really loved that series. Can’t believe they are not bringing it back
EXTANT was a top-tier show with definite star power. The characters were deep and real, I just wanted more Sigourney Weaver from Berry, more The Comedian from Morgan and more Hailey Joel Osmont from the little A.I. kid. I tried my best to get into it, the premise was magnetic, but found I forced myself to watch every week. Not a good sign. Oddly enough, my two favourite characters were the husband (killed off) and Berry’s former boyfriend (also dead). EXTANT could have used some megalithic messiness like BLADE RUNNER or the techno-despair of LOGAN’S RUN. I would definately revive… Read more »
We really liked Extant and are sorry to hear there won’t be more. Well-acted, inventive, and not totally predictable sci-fi is rare, and Extant pretty much rose to the occasion. Great to see Halle, but all the cast was impressive. Lawyer shows are much less appealing to us (SO predictable!), but especially we’re bored to tears with shows that wrap up some single, wild story every episode yet string along a thin thread of some continuing plot with little hints at the end and beginning. WE want big stories that carry through many episodes and don’t require the distraction and… Read more »
Well said, I couldn’t agree more. Extant was a well written show, and I was really looking forward to seeing season 3. Bummed out, I am.
The second season was better than the first. It wandered less, and it improved over time. The series is cancelled just as its coherence and rythms were increasing interest. Too bad it is gone, but not as tragic as Wayward Pines.
Totally agree. Extant and Wayward Pines were the 2 shows I looked forward to the most.
I would have liked to see a 3rd season
Would like a third season too
