A couple months ago, NBC premiered a new legal TV series from David E. Kelley called Harry’s Law. The series started out decently in the ratings but has fallen quite a bit since then. Tonight is the season finale. Will it be back for season two or end up cancelled?
Harry’s Law revolves around Harriet “Harry” Korn (Kathy Bates), a cranky former patent lawyer. She’s abruptly fired from a big firm, forcing Harry to search for a fresh start. She finds it when she meets Malcolm Davies (Aml Ameen), a college student who desperately needs her help and ends up working for her. A young legal hotshot named Adam Branch (Nate Corddry) accidentally hits Harry and gives up his corporate job to join the team. With the help of Harry’s footwear-obsessed assistant, Jenna (Brittany Snow), they open for business as Harriet’s Law and Fine Shoes.
The NBC series debuted in January with a 2.2 rating in the prized 18-49 demographic and 11.07 million viewers. That was an improvement of nearly 50% in the demo when compared to the last original episode of Chase, the previous timeslot occupant and NBC has had a hard time filling that spot for quite some time. The second episode only came down 5% to a 2.1 rating and 10.43 million. Week three held steady. It was looking like NBC had a hit — or as close as the network seems to get these days.
Then, the fourth installment took a big tumble, dropping 19% to a 1.7 demo rating and 9.22 million. It stayed at that level for a couple weeks, popped up to a 1.8 rating, and has most recently been holding steady at a 1.6 rating. That’s pretty close to what Chase had been doing and that’s all but cancelled.
Tonight marks the twelfth and final episode of the season and Harry’s Law is averaging a 1.8 rating and 9.54 million viewers. It’s the 10th highest rated scripted series on the network, tied with Chuck. On the other big networks, the series would certainly doomed but NBC has lots of ratings problems.
In truth, based on the demo numbers alone, NBC shouldn’t bring back this series for a second season. However, though it ranks towards the bottom of the demo rankings, it’s the most-watched TV show on the network. Though that doesn’t count for much, considering the state of NBC, it may be enough to get Harry’s Law a renewal.
On the other hand, with David E. Kelley likely having another series on NBC next season — the new Wonder Woman — network execs might prefer that he focus on that one and let Harry’s Law go. If they don’t like the Wonder Woman pilot, that may be enough to save Kathy Bates and company.
NBC probably won’t reveal the fate of Harry’s Law until the advertiser upfronts on May 16th. We’ll keep you posted.
What do you think? Should Harry’s Law be renewed or cancelled? If it does comes back, how would you suggest they change it to attract more viewers?

My husband & I lOVE Harry’s Law! Of course, we were already great fans of Kathy Bates. PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL IT!
My husband & I LOVE
My wife and I loved the first episodes but began to lose interest when it started looking more like an evening soap opera. We’ve never seen a show who’s writers lost focus of a successful story line so quickly. The first episodes were not only entertaining, they were also poignant because they addressed issues that were socially and culturally meaningful; issues that the mainstream audience know exist but are helpless to correct. Are there actually any adults left in the United States who believe justice can’t be bought? Of course not. No, Wait! Yes, there are! Those who can afford… Read more »
I really enjoy this show. It’s a refreshing twist on the legal profession showing their vulnerabilities and not always about their legal prowess. I like the chemistry between the characters as well. I hope NBC decides to keep this one going for a long time. I look forward to seeing more Harry’s Law.
I think this is a great show! I hope it will be renewed. It is as good as shows such as Ally McBeal, Boston Legal, and Eli Stone, all shows that are now gone. I wonder if the fact that the show also aired on Saturday caused the Monday night ratings to be lower than they would otherwise be. It is the best show on NBC! Further,it seems to me that CBS’ Two and a Half Men airing right before the time slot for Harry’s Law might make it tough for NBC to get a large share of the viewers… Read more »
I don’t like most shows and seldom watch TV. But then I saw Harry’s Law. It was so refreshingly different. Love Kathy Bates. I looked forward to Monday’s and was so disappointed to see it no longer on. Both my husband and I hope the network will give it a go for another season.
Harry’s Law kept me sitting on the edge of my seat week after week. I am so tired of comedies and reality shows. It was refreshing and held my attention. Every show I have enjoyed is being cancelled. Shame on you NBC….there are a few adults left in this world that care about shows with substance! After while TV won’t be worth watching. It’s a new show and not a remake of something old. It’s not CSI anything! I gave up Castle on ABC for Harry’s Law and so did a lot of my co-workers. My partner does not watch… Read more »
I want Harry’s Law back for anther season. The concept is new and interesting. The location of the office and the quirky grouping of people who come together at this office is what I always wanted to see on TV. The real people in this world coming together with the eliment of good and bad showing up in each of them, the egos clashing but yet melding together to a final resolve. I laugh, I think about the situation in front of me and I an able to see both sides and then the hard core law is right there,… Read more »
Please bring Harry back. This was easily the best show running. Fresh and lively writing with intelligence and wit. What are the powers at be thinking to cancel one of the greats.
I think they should renew it…there demographics may be wrong about the age group that watches (probably appeals to the 40-60 year olds. It’s a great show, Harry (Kathy Bates) is gutsy and funny. We need a few more “good” shows on TV.

My fave show. Look forward to Mondays. Please, with all the crap out there in reality, just give us this one pure form of entertainment acted by a great actress. Who picks the shows anyway? I worry about children with remotes! Please do not cancel this safe, entertaining & engaging show. Allow intelligent TV to survive!
