A couple months ago, NBC premiered a new legal TV series from David E. Kelley called Harry’s Law. The series started out decently in the ratings but has fallen quite a bit since then. Tonight is the season finale. Will it be back for season two or end up cancelled?
Harry’s Law revolves around Harriet “Harry” Korn (Kathy Bates), a cranky former patent lawyer. She’s abruptly fired from a big firm, forcing Harry to search for a fresh start. She finds it when she meets Malcolm Davies (Aml Ameen), a college student who desperately needs her help and ends up working for her. A young legal hotshot named Adam Branch (Nate Corddry) accidentally hits Harry and gives up his corporate job to join the team. With the help of Harry’s footwear-obsessed assistant, Jenna (Brittany Snow), they open for business as Harriet’s Law and Fine Shoes.
The NBC series debuted in January with a 2.2 rating in the prized 18-49 demographic and 11.07 million viewers. That was an improvement of nearly 50% in the demo when compared to the last original episode of Chase, the previous timeslot occupant and NBC has had a hard time filling that spot for quite some time. The second episode only came down 5% to a 2.1 rating and 10.43 million. Week three held steady. It was looking like NBC had a hit — or as close as the network seems to get these days.
Then, the fourth installment took a big tumble, dropping 19% to a 1.7 demo rating and 9.22 million. It stayed at that level for a couple weeks, popped up to a 1.8 rating, and has most recently been holding steady at a 1.6 rating. That’s pretty close to what Chase had been doing and that’s all but cancelled.
Tonight marks the twelfth and final episode of the season and Harry’s Law is averaging a 1.8 rating and 9.54 million viewers. It’s the 10th highest rated scripted series on the network, tied with Chuck. On the other big networks, the series would certainly doomed but NBC has lots of ratings problems.
In truth, based on the demo numbers alone, NBC shouldn’t bring back this series for a second season. However, though it ranks towards the bottom of the demo rankings, it’s the most-watched TV show on the network. Though that doesn’t count for much, considering the state of NBC, it may be enough to get Harry’s Law a renewal.
On the other hand, with David E. Kelley likely having another series on NBC next season — the new Wonder Woman — network execs might prefer that he focus on that one and let Harry’s Law go. If they don’t like the Wonder Woman pilot, that may be enough to save Kathy Bates and company.
NBC probably won’t reveal the fate of Harry’s Law until the advertiser upfronts on May 16th. We’ll keep you posted.
What do you think? Should Harry’s Law be renewed or cancelled? If it does comes back, how would you suggest they change it to attract more viewers?

I really like “Harry’s Law”. I’d rather see “Dancing With the Stars” or “American Idol” cancelled. Harry is one of the only shows on T.V. I watch!!!
Please renew this series !!! It is a bright spot in TV land ! My husband and I absolutely love it , and would not change anything .
I love this show…the acting is superb, the story lines aren’t bad and the comic aspect is great. It’s very entertaining. Please give it another chance.
My husband and I love this show. We look forward to watching it every week. There isn’t anything I would change. Love Kathy Bates. Please give this show another chance.
we love the show for lack of violence and are dissapointed we haven’t found it last couple of weeks.. whats with cancelling this great show its a keeper
WELL MY HUSBAND AND I SURE HOPE YOU SEE FIT TO BRING THIS SHOW BACK ON. IT IS ONE SHOW THAT MY HUSBAND AND I ENJOY TOGETHER AND WE DO NOT WATCH THAT MUCH TOGETHER. WE EVEN CENTER IT AROUND WHAT WE DO SO WE CAN SEE IT. WE ARE CRUSHED THAT IT WAS TAKEN OFF. PLEASE PUT THIS BACK ON THE AIR . THANK YOU.
Note: I’m so sick and tired of all those stupid Reality Shows that I hardly turn on the TV anymore. All the CSI and a few of the Law & Order, Closer, Blue Bloods and the Hallmark Channels is all we watch.
It is a wonderful entertaining show. We love all the characters. We alternate recording Harry one week and Hawii-five-O the next week. We like them both. All our family’s watch and record and a lot of our neighbors watch both of them also. Please don’t cancel the show. all of us have been upset that it’s no longer on.
Please don’t cancel Harry’s Law!!! I love, love anything from David E. Kelly and, this again, is one of my favorites. Kathy Bates is the best and each week is another great episode. I, too, watch this with my husband. There aren’t many shows that we both enjoy, so it is always fun to look forward to Monday night at 9pm on NBC. I’m sure that Kathy Bates will be nominated for an emmy (as she should be) and it would be a shame for it to have gone off the air. Please don’t cancel!!!
Great show, cast is excellent and story lines have been very original, imagine that.
I agree with the majority of comments!! This show is awesome…It’s smart tv. Kathy and the rest of this cast work so well in this show! It’s a hit at my house on Monday nights. My husband doesn’t watch much tv and he even looked forward to it. In fact the whole family loves it…..we really cover the demographic…..my daughter is 20 my husband is 50 his mother is 90 and I’m 45 …..bring it back, we love it!
It’s smart tv? Are you kidding me? It’s so cheesy and lame…
Let me guess.. you must be a soccer mom.. and lost a lot of brain cell by not working for 20 years..
That’s would be the ONLY excuse for calling it smart tv
Why do all the shows we like get cancelled? Please keep this show on TV. Maybe an earlier time slot would help.
my husband and i love kathy bates and all her supporting actors! its a great show. not too violent or immoral. keeps your interest with some good humor to boot. we live in the cincinnati area. Please dont cancel Harry’s Law!!!!!
keep the show. great writing. we look forward to watching each week. love kathy bates.
This is a wonderful show…why are there so many dumb shows on t.v.? As soon as there is a show that requires some thinking, it is removed…We lost The Practice, Boston Legal, which was terrific and now this?????
Well, at least CBS, thank goodness offers The Good Wife and The Mentalist, both winners…Thanks, CBS>>>>
