Last week, after the poor debut of FOX’s Lone Star, TV show creator Kyle Killen asked people to give the series a chance and hoped for a “stunning upset” in the ratings.
Sadly, that didn’t happen and the ratings for episode two dropped even lower. It was no surprise when FOX pulled Lone Star from the schedule and cancelled production.
Killen has had some time to reflect on the events of the past couple weeks and has written another post about Lone Star. He expresses gratitude for the chance to make the show and to the many viewers for their support. He also talks about the possibility of Lone Star moving to another channel but understands the chances are remote at best.
Here are some excerpts. You can read the whole post here.
So here’s the thing. We made a good show. Not Shakespeare. Not MASH. But something I was proud of. I can’t really speak to anyone else’s reaction, I can only be honest about my own. We assembled a staff, a cast, and a crew that I think was committed to telling interesting and thought provoking stories and who were excited about where we’d planned to head. And now it’s over. The part of me that feels awful that these people are now out of work wishes they’d done anything other than join this show. The part of me that’s so excited about what we did can’t thank them enough for signing on and making it happen.
As for the show’s future, if you read the news you know what I know. We’re actively looking at other homes for it, but those situations are rare. Imagine trying to just jam the engine from a Toyota in a Chevy and you get some idea how hard it is to take a show from one network to another. These things are custom jobs and what looks simple on the surface requires an incredible amount of engineering underneath. Whether we’ll pull something like that off is anyone’s guess. But we’re certainly trying.
Lastly, I literally don’t have the words to thank those of you who participated here and on twitter and facebook and, you know, the real world, in supporting the show. I’ve been in the habit of writing incredibly inane things in this space for some time and have to say that I was blindsided by the scale of the reaction to my last post. Of all the incredible and unexpected things to come out of this entire process, those last few days were perhaps the most incredible and certainly the least expected. I feel like we tried to get a write in candidate elected president together, and while we were completely and utterly destroyed when the votes were tallied, I’ve never felt such an odd and full connection to a group of people I’ve never met and likely never will. Given all that, ‘Thank you’ seems woefully insufficient to convey my gratitude. Perhaps I can just mow all your lawns for the hell of it.
What do you think? Do you agree with Killen? If you had your way, which channel would pick it up?

My husband and I are so very disappointed that Fox has cancelled this wonderful new show. It was such a change from most of the junk that is on TV today….I can’t believe it is over. Please do all that you can to find another network to pick it up!!!!!!
I loved the show and was looking forward to catching every episode. It was a nice change from all the reality junk shows. I’m tired of watching the trash jersey shore, dancing with the who’s and all the other non sense shows. The only reason I think the ratings were so low was because of Monday Night Football. Probably should not have tried to compete against that audience. Just my two cents.
My wife and I really enjoyed this show. So disappointing that Fox pulled this after only 2 episodes. We are the target audience for this show, encouraged other people to watch as well. Unfortunately for FOX. they just lost a very key marketing audience of households that make over $250,000 a year and like to enjoy tv that doesn’t involve a murder or reality for a change. Bad move. We will not be back to invest in another series that gets cancelled too soon. Good luck with your teenage market.
I loved the show and think that it was cancelled way too prematurely! I hope that it moves to a cable station. This is why I never watch ABC, NBC CBS FOX etc — you can start to get into a show for a season and then — that’s it. it gets cancelled. Fox should have changed the time slot.
Might be a fit for USA Network. Slogan: “Characters welcome.”
All the shows for intelligent people get axed.
I gotta admit, I loved the show for the same reason I loved HU$TLE, LEVERAGE, The RICHES, White Collar, Burn Notice, and COVERT AFFAIRS……..I could relate to them! The show had promise, and good character development. A veiwer could truly be drawn into the lives of the characters of the show. (And, like the previous comments before me, I tweeted, and twittered, and FaceBooked my tongue off about how great the show was….only to have it cancelled……..smooth move, FOX!) I swore you guys off for the longest time when you cancelled Dark Angel, and Bird of Prey….looks like you pissed… Read more »
I think the show was good too.But lets get real, its what they do to good shows.
I loved Lone Star and can’t believe it was cancelled. Every time a show requires that viewers use their brains a little it gets canned by the network. The scheduling of this show doomed it from the beginning. I say move it to FX or AMC and let those of us who enjoy using our heads to watch a television show have it back.
I loved this show and the lead actor was mesmerizing…..
sorry to see it gone and I would follow it on any channel
I thought the show was great and was hooked!!!!! I was tired of all the reality shows and was looking forward to watching a good show. Very sad thats its not on anymore.
i loved the show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so tired of networks cancelling my shows!!!!!!!!!!!!! that really stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree it was a great show. I hope another network picks it up
I have mixed feelings about the main character as he decided to pursue both lives. Taking the “real” job and seeing how he would try to right the wrong with his previous “marks” was admirable, but going back to the other life and marrying the girlfriend was a bit confusing considering what he was looking to accomplish. If he wanted something real, running a dual life is not a good start. Two episodes were not enough to see where it would go, but I was really on the fence after both episodes on whether or not to invest more time… Read more »
I watched episodes 1 & 2 and I was hooked. Great show. Very sorry to see it cancelled. I would definately watch it on another channel.
I loved this show! It was one of my favorites for the new season. I never write in to talk about tv shows, but I was so upset when I found out it was cancelled that I had to say something. I hope they will not give up on this show and move it to another channel. I’ve told so many people about how great it was, only to find out it is not on tv any more. Very disappointing!
