There’s lots of data that the networks look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but the ratings are the main ingredient. (Wonder if your favorite’s already been renewed or cancelled? Visit our NBC 2011-12 show page.

A couple of notes about these charts:
The averages included in this chart are based on the final numbers, not the fast affiliate ratings that are typically reported the next morning. The final numbers become available about a day after the broadcasts or in some cases several days later. The charts will be updated as the new data becomes available.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers (not total viewers) are what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating versus one with a lot more overall viewers.
Demo numbers are reported by Nielsen using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). We used to report averages that way but it ends up being hard to see any movement week to week. It can also be a little misleading since a show with a 2.35 average and a show with a 2.44 average will both round to a 2.4 rating.
In these charts, we’re including the demo average rounded to the 10th (2.4) as well as the 100th place (2.41) in parenthesis so you can get a better idea of how the average has been affected by the latest episode’s demo rating.
The letter grades are relative (kind of like grading on a curve) and are based on the individual network’s demo performance (either scripted or non-scripted). All of the networks have very different gauges for success right now. (A successful show for The CW would get quickly cancelled on CBS.) Our system for coming up with letter grades isn’t perfect but it should still give you an idea of where the different shows stand.
*The grades for TV series that run on Friday and Saturday nights are weighted a little differently, to compensate for airing on little-watched nights.
What do you think? Are surprised by any of the ratings? Are any of your favorite shows in danger of being cancelled? Which should be doing better?
FYI, the Report card link on the right takes me to two year old report cards. You might want to update the links. Also, for some reason, the new ratings boxes that you are using have stopped showing up during the last week. Now I just see blank white spaces between what you right.
I’m working on new season posts as I write this. It’s been awhile since I’ve done a new one but it hasn’t been that long so I’m not sure what’s going on. I’ll look into it. As to why you’re not seeing the charts, I’m not sure about that either. I’ve just checked on my tablet and another laptop and they appear just fine. Maybe try refreshing the page? Does that help?
Great! Why the hell you cancelled Chuck it was the best show I have ever seen.I hope you will do 6 season.
My girlfriend and I are looking to purchase season II of The Firm via ITune, but we do not know when the next season will start, so we can purchase the whole seiers. Please advise me when it will start again.
Thank you,
Carlos Rivera
The show was cancelled. Season one is all there is.
GREAT!! Many of my favorite shows have been cancelled:
The Firm, Harry’s Law, Missing! Iam 72 years old and have been an avid movie and T.V watcher all my adult life and I love these shows. What is it about the T.V. networks and the corney sitcombs? I will not be watching NBC in the 2012-2013 season and hope their new shows go bust!
Wow, NBC does it again! They cancel good, deceint shows. The FIRM was awesome yet they have canned it. What a shame! It is a big pain that everytime you turn around you have switched time slots. I do not think it was the show that was the problem, I think it is the fact that NBC makes everything confusing. We DVR the FIRM every week and look forward to getting to sit down and watch it. The finale was great but now we don’t know if we will be able to get to see what happens. I hope another… Read more »
Hated tv this 2011-2012 season because they kept switching time slots on us then cancel the best shows such as: Harry’s Law and The Firm. I think they need to give The Firm a fair shot for a 2nd season and a better time slot. I still miss 24!!!
Save Harry’s Law….everyone I know watches it, I am 68 years old, thus I
must not be in the right age group to count, or any of my friends. But, I
also purchase things, work & spend money….
Save Harry’s Law please
why would you keep a high rated, good, funny, wonderful show on like Harrys Law when you could tune into kids having babies and getting rewarded by being on tv? No brainer- SAVE HARRYS LAW.
My husband and I love the Firm and Harry’s Law. Please don’t cancel them.
All my family watches these 2 shows.
