At the TCA press tour, Michael Lombardo, HBO’s president of programming, spoke about the future of No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. Though it won’t be continuing as a TV series, there are plans to continue the story in the form of two movies.
No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency ran for seven episodes on HBO, from March until May in 2009. The comedy-drama was filmed on location in Botswana and follows Mma Ramotswe as she operates a detective agency. The cast includes Jill Scott, Anika Noni Rose, Lucian Msamati, and Desmond Dube.
This weekend, Lombardo said, “We’re talking to our friends at the Weinstein Company about the possibility of, and actually developing two scripts, possibly to do two movies. And if we can get the cast together and if everything can come together we’ve love to do it. So it’s alive.”
If they get the final go-ahead, the two HBO movies would likely be shot back-to-back. It seems they won’t be filmed completely in Botswana however.
It was reported last month that the show’s producers had relocated from Botswana to Cape Town. The Botswana government, hard hit by the recession, balked at the idea of subsidizing film production while South Africa doubled their rebate offer.
If the movies are actually made, they’ll be filmed mostly in Cape Town with occasional lensing in Botswana, the locale where the story is set.
What do you think? Are you a fan of No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency? Would you like to see it return as a pair of movies?

I just found the reruns of the series by accident and started watching it. What a cute, delightful series. PLEASE BRING IT BACK – or do the 2 movies..MUCH MUCH better than the JUNK THAT that is currently on TV now.
If the series continued I believe that more and more viewers would ‘find’ it and it would be a hit. The cast is glorious and the stories are wonderful and it would be such a waste to just cancel it and let it go. Please humor us and bring it back – you won’t regret it HBO.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the books and was pleasantly surprised that the TV series kept me as enthralled as the books. Of course, needless to say, I was saddened to see that this delightful show was cancelled. Bring it back any way you choose but bring it back. But, personally, I think if you continued the TV series, it would be a great success.
I love this show! Please bring it back in any form.
please bring this back. It is wholesome, funny, refreshing, and thought provoking. It is such a nice change from the frivolous or violent sludge that clogs up television.
I have read a couple of the books and just watched the first 2 DVDs of season one. I LOVED IT. The cast is amazing and the stories are wonderful – entertaining and funny. I would LOVE to see a movie with these actors.
Ok I don’t post online this will be the first. What is HBO thinking. I watched the DVDs because I love the books. What fine acting and scenery. Having been to Africa the show brought back fine memories. I may be wrong but with HBO I have trouble finding what dates and times my favorite show air. Well may be someone will read this maybe not due to the late post. Now to have a “cup of bush tea”.
Great show!! I just discovered it and watching it on DVD. Bring it back!
I just started watching the series. I’m in love with it from beginning to end. I laughed and cried because it was so good. Please bring it back!
I love the books and discovered the tv series was purely the icing on the cake. I’m very saddened they canceled the program but hope to see the movies soon.
I listened to the books on tape, which was wonderful. My Husband and I just finished the DVDs and fell in love with them. We would love to see more of this. I would love to get an e-mail if any more developments happen about a movie or second series. The cast were perfect. They could not have done a better job.
P.S. This was one perfect cast.
I”m keeping my fingers cross that there is either a second season or a movie.
I read all eleven books of the series…I watched the seven episodes which were
so sadly cut….I am left with re-runs. Please oh please, let HBO pick it up again…
and let there be a movie also!!!! Every friend I have (except one) is a big fan.
My husband and I have listened to all of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency on audio books and were thrilled to find the series on DVD and devastated to find that there is only one season. PLEASE BRING BACK with the rest of the seasons to cover all of the books. This kind of entertainment is so refreshing.
We’ve listened to the audio books and fell in love with the characters and the stories. We were thrilled to find the DVD series and have been disappointed to see the series end with season one. PPLEASE BRING BACK season 2 and continue to the end of the books. We would love to see in the movies too.
I just started watching this during reruns and am completely and totally in love with Precious and the cast. HBO how could you take off such a wonderfully entertaining show. Please bring it back. I think I will have to buy the series on DVD before that goes away too!!
