At the TCA press tour, Michael Lombardo, HBO’s president of programming, spoke about the future of No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. Though it won’t be continuing as a TV series, there are plans to continue the story in the form of two movies.
No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency ran for seven episodes on HBO, from March until May in 2009. The comedy-drama was filmed on location in Botswana and follows Mma Ramotswe as she operates a detective agency. The cast includes Jill Scott, Anika Noni Rose, Lucian Msamati, and Desmond Dube.
This weekend, Lombardo said, “We’re talking to our friends at the Weinstein Company about the possibility of, and actually developing two scripts, possibly to do two movies. And if we can get the cast together and if everything can come together we’ve love to do it. So it’s alive.”
If they get the final go-ahead, the two HBO movies would likely be shot back-to-back. It seems they won’t be filmed completely in Botswana however.
It was reported last month that the show’s producers had relocated from Botswana to Cape Town. The Botswana government, hard hit by the recession, balked at the idea of subsidizing film production while South Africa doubled their rebate offer.
If the movies are actually made, they’ll be filmed mostly in Cape Town with occasional lensing in Botswana, the locale where the story is set.
What do you think? Are you a fan of No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency? Would you like to see it return as a pair of movies?

Just watched the last episode on DVD.
Great stories, acting and scenery.
More please
I am ready to see Season 2 of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency
I absolutely love the show and am sad there was only 7 episodes. Would love to see it continue and would watch the movies. The cast qas perfect.
I loved it very refreshing.
It was wonderful, great story and actors. Now I shall read the books. Please make those movies.
We were so disappointed to realize we had seen the last episode; please do continue this as a series or as the two movies mentioned in article by Wikipedia.
The world is totally upside down. This amazing series, beautifully written and with stellar acting; a high caliber, high quality program is cancelled, while all kinds of crap (Psych, any number of mindless reality shows) continue on and on. This just does not make sense. I was so sad at the end of this too short series—I wept for missing the characters.
Please continue this fantastic series. It doesn’t make sense to can a drama of such high quality and there is clearly an audience for subsequent series. You need to do it quickly so that the fabulous actors in the first series do not age to much!
I loved the series. I have hoped that HBO would get it together and continue the series, but that has not happened.
I loved the books, loved the tv series, and was very disappointed that the series was discontinued. It is a refreshing departure from the usual tv fare.
I recently discovered the No.1LDA books in my local library and have become so engrossed in the characters and their stories. I then found and watched the TV series only to find that Ep7 was the final. What a shame. Unless and until someone makes an inspired decision to continue this refreshing TV series I will have to be satisfied with reading more of these wonderful books.
Just discovered this series on Netflix. Thiroughly enjoyed it and sad it was cancelled.
I also watched this series through Netflix. I really enjoyed watching the series and was so disappointed to find out that there are no more seasons. The last episode left us expecting and wanting more. This show was very refreshing and entertaining. I love the fact that I could watch the show with my daughter and not have to worry about any foul language or inappropriate scenes. As one show ended I looked forward to viewing the next one. Now I have nothing to anticipate, although it ended as though we would get to see more. Sad to see such… Read more »
