Tonight, Numb3rs finishes off its sixth season with episode 118, “Cause and Effect.” Will the show be back next season? A decision hasn’t been made yet but lots of people are betting that it will be cancelled.
Numb3rs follows FBI Agent Don Eppes (Rob Morrow) and his genius brother, Charlie (David Krumholtz), who helps the authorities solve cases with mathematics. The cast also features Judd Hirsch (as their father), Alimi Ballard, Dylan Bruno, Navi Rawat, Aya Sumika, and Peter MacNicol.
The series debuted in January 2005 and has long been a successful player for CBS on Friday nights. In season one, Numb3rs averaged a 3.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and about 11.1 million viewers. They went up in season two, with an average of a 3.3 rating and 11.7 million viewers. Viewership has fallen since then however and last season, Numb3rs scored a 2.2 and 10.2 million.
This season, Numb3rs’ ratings have dropped further still — averaging a 1.8 rating and 8.26 million viewers each week. As a result of the decline in ratings, CBS (which is having a very good season) decided to cut back on the number of episodes and reduced their season order from 22 to 16 installments.

The official reason for the decrease is that CBS had too much programming and needed space to try out new series. Next week, Numb3rs’ timeslot will be occupied by a new show, Miami Medical.
CBS has maintained that the fate of Numb3rs hasn’t been decided yet but, considering the series’ production costs and ratings, it seems fairly certain that the show is done.
In fact, ABC and FOX are betting on it. The networks have already cast Morrow and Krumholtz in new pilots.
Morrow will star in a dramatic pilot called The Whole Truth for ABC, opposite Joely Richardson. He’ll play a fiercely competitive and successful defense attorney who is close friends with his equally talented courtroom adversary (Richardson). Whole Truth is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
Meanwhile, Krumholtz has been cast in a comedy pilot for FOX called Tax Man. The project’s being produced by Ron Howard and stars Krumholtz as an IRS Agent who’s trying to find nobility in his work. Judy Greer recently joined the cast.
If CBS does decide to bring Numb3rs back for another season, both Morrow and Krumholtz will be obligated to return. However, the other networks wouldn’t cast them in new pilots unless they felt it was a very strong possibility that Numb3rs would indeed be cancelled.
What do you think? Would you like to see Numb3rs return for a seventh season or is it time to say goodbye to the Eppes?

Please bring Numbers back! My husband and I watch it religiously. It’s by far one of the most intriguing and engaging shows out there right now . . . wonderful character development and great plotlines, not to mention the amazing chemistry the actors all have. They feel like family to us!
Please don’t cancel Numb3rs! It’s intelectually challenging and there’s nothing of this level on TV.
so they just want to drop 8 million viewers? really these f*cking nealson ratings are idiotic, who gets these neilson boxes hillbillies in the backwoods of the bible belt?
I mean seriously, Better off Ted, Chuck, Fringe, Numb3rs, wtf do they want to leave tv with another f*cking season of smallville oh and 90210!?!?!?!
My husband and I have enjoyed Numb3rs from the beginning. It’s a family oriented, right-fighting show that is rare to find on TV today. The focus on math and science in attractive careers is appealing also. Please do not cancel this show.
I used to love the show. But lately it is more drama and less of its hook of math. They also have too many quirky characters showing up like the new phycisist. Since their format is more cops and less math, I do not see that it is worth continuing. I would however love a continuation of the show in England with Charlie and his wife helping Scotland Yard and a returnto the math focus and the great little explanations they give!
If its not broke then don’t try to fix it. This is a great show. Please bring it back next season.
For the past several years I have looked forward to seeing a new episode of Numb3rs every Friday night. I just love the show and it makes me sad to think that I’ve seen the last episode. I didn’t see it coming until I watched the show. I knew something was up with the wedding, England assignment, David’s new job in Washington, Don’s proposal, etc. Too many changes in one episode. I was also a little perplexed to learn that it was the season ending. CBS PPPPPPPleeeeeeeaaaaasssssssseeee, Please, Please bring it back for at least one more season.
Why not cancel it, it seems they keep the shows that are bad and cut the shows that people like Numbers was different and an entertaining show. If it goes it will be more time I spend with off majog Networks. Seems ABC< NBC and CBS only know how to do clones and not supporting good and different shows.
Have enjoyed numbers every season and have watched each episode. Hope they will bring it back.
Our family loves the show: Numbers. Even my 11 year old daughter takes a nap after school so she can stay up “late” on a school night. It is truely a family show and we all hope they continue to have many more years of new episodes. Many of my coworkers and neighbors watch the show religiously each week. Please don’t cancel the show.
Charlie
Hey Chuck. 🙂
We all love numbers. It a great, drama and interesting show. Even my 11 yr old daughter takes a nap after school so she can stay up the one school night numbers is on. We all hope they continue new episodes for many years. Its truely a great family show.
If Nina Tassler is smart she will renew Numb3rs pronto. Does she really want to loose both Morrow and Krumoltz to other networks? Numb3rs is the most unique and innovative show on the air. It has tons of storyline left to tell. Be true to your word Ms. Tassler, if the episode order was really cut simply to make way for Miami Medical then renew Numb3rs and prove it.
Numb3rs is an intellectual drama and we need more of those. Besides the engaging diolgue and story lines, the characters are interesteing and (if you’re a fan) we’ve watched them develop over the last 6 years. David moving on, Don taking a desk job and prpoposing, and the new Mr and Mrs Epps heading to Cambridge leave many new story lines to develop. I will miss the show as it is engaging and makes you think! What’s next to go…..Criminal Minds! Maybe Scotland Yard can use Charlie!
Love Numb3rs, please don’t cancel it. Crime mixed with science – good combination.
I was devastated to hear that numbers might be cancelled. This show is the only thing going on a Friday nite. I look forward to it every week. The actors are like family to me. They interact so well with each other. I enjoy this show so much. Last night was horrible to see everyone going in different directions. They belong together so please do not cancel it.
