FOX has announced that the three unaired episodes of Red Band Society will run on two consecutive Saturdays — January 31st and February 7th — but that will be the end of the series. There won’t be a second season.
A dramedy, Red Band Society revolves around the young patients and caretakers of the pediatric ward of the renowned Ocean Park Hospital in Los Angeles. The cast includes Octavia Spencer, Dave Annable, Griffin Gluck, Nolan Sotillo, Charlie Rowe, Astro, Zoe Levin, Ciara Bravo, Mandy Moore, and Rebecca Rittenhouse.
The series debuted in September to unimpressive ratings and the numbers got much worse in subsequent weeks. It was no surprise when FOX chose not to order any additional episodes. Traditionally, that’s a sure sign that a series will be cancelled but word is that FOX and ABC Studios each made efforts to keep it going.
Though Red Band Society’s ratings were too low to keep it on the air as a regular season show, the network wanted to keep it — potentially as a summer series. The catch is that that would have required a lower licensing fee. It’s a high-end series and budgets for summer shows are really tight. In the end, it’s not a big surprise that a deal couldn’t be worked out with the studio for FOX to keep it.
Execs at ABC Studios also really like the series so they tried shopping it to other outlets to keep the show alive. Ultimately there were no takers so the series is now dead.
Red Band Society will end its short run on February 7th with a pair of episodes. Hopefully the finale will give dedicated viewers some sense of closure.
What do you think? Did you like Red Band Society? Are you sorry that the show’s been cancelled? Would you have followed it to another channel?
I think I speak for those of us who are chronically ill when I say that Red Band Society was maybe the first show ever that showed what it’s like to be sick and live in that world from the patient’s perspective. It gave me hope as I’m sure it did for many others. It was and always will be a beautiful/honest/funny and extremely touching show and while I signed every petition there was to keep it going I will always be extremely grateful that it came about at all. We need to be validating shows like Red Band Society… Read more »
Yes, yes,and yes!!! Loved this show. So sorry to hear it is cancelled. Would have definitely followed it to another channel.
I LOVE this Show! Soooooo Sad to find out it is not being renewed! I can’t believe it didn’t have a bigger following! I know it had sadness, but it had hope and goodness to it too! Very sorry to see this show go off the air!
sorry to hear show is cancelled, excellent show, would watch it on another channel, a lot better show, than most shows on tv
So sad to see this off the air! I wonder if the ratings take into account how many others, like myself, who work during the time it airs and have to watch it on Hulu or DVR. Make no mistake, it was one of only a couple of must-see shows that I had to watch as soon as it was available.
Extremely upset about RBS not returning. . It quickly became my favorite show.. I was hooked from the first show.. it is a good clean show… hard to find these days… how can just plain trash make it but yet RBS not?? Not a happy camper!!
Very sorry to see this show go. So many topics that need to be open for discussion were brought to the forefront through situations and conversations by the wonderful young actors and actresses. I definitely would have watched on any other station.
Honey boo hoo quality is what sells.. Really ashame that a good quality show cannot make it, unless it’s criminal, attorney,or a reality show. It’s all about the numbers. I want to say RB was well casted and will be missed.
wHERE,S THE OFFICIAL REPORT THAT IT,S BEEN AXED. i THINBK THERE WILL BE A 2ND SERIES.
This show is amazing I feel like it’s a show that you just need to give a chance. Now a days it seems like channels don’t give a show a chance to grow and become something even greater! This show had the potential to be amazing.
it’s a great show that teenagers can relate to and adults as well, it’s a shame that it has been cancelled my wife and I would have followed it to any other station. this show is a lot better than most of those lame reality shows.
I think next to the walking dead it is the best show on TV can’t believe it is canceled
It is a good show but it’s unfair that there wasn’t any steady schedule for it. Unless you had it scheduled to DVR as is did you probably missed it. More often than not I didn’t know it was on until I saw that it had been recorded.
What a mistake! Such a difficult topic presented and discussed in a very meaningful manner. There are many, many people unfortunately dealing with these type of issues. It is a very irrelevant subject to view on television. Is this less important than some of the silliness that is presented on TV? Very sad, very sad. Kudos to the young actors that had to deal with such topics. They were amazing.
Sorry. The word was relevant.
Wow! Just read that Red Band Society was cancelled. Very Upset. My daughter and I really enjoyed the show. If Fox couldn’t make it work it would have been great on ABC family.
It was a terrific show. It is relevant to what is happening to teenagers today.
