Talk about a letdown. The Rise TV show has been cancelled after just one season on NBC. The high school drama from Jason Katims, who knows a thing or two about shows like that, premiered on the Peacock Network on March 13, of 2018. Ratings for the first two episodes were good enough, but the series just couldn’t sustain its performance in the Nielsens, thereafter.
An NBC musical drama, Rise stars Josh Radnor, Rosie Perez, Auli’i Cravalho, Damon J. Gillespie, Marley Shelton, Rarmian Newton, Ted Sutherland, Amy Forsyth, Casey W. Johnson, Taylor Richardson, Joe Tippett, and Shirley Rumierk. The series centers on Lou Mazzuchelli (Radnor), who is the fictional analogue to Lou Volpe in the Michael Sokolov book, Drama High. Although he is committed to his students at Stanton High School, Lou knows he needs to shake things up, in order to rekindle his passion for teaching. To that end, he petitions to direct the school’s theater program, but soon realizes he signed up for a whole lot more than he originally expected.
Rise: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Rise averaged a 0.85 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.44 million viewers. Find out how Rise stacks up against other NBC TV shows.
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Rise TV series on NBC? If it were up to you, would it have been cancelled or renewed for a second season?
The talent in this show is remarkable. However, I commend NBC for cancelling this series. We need more shows on tv that contribute responsibility to our nation and society. While I realize that the issues portrayed on “Rise” are relevant, I don’t believe they should be romanticized on mainstream television. NBC’s decision helps us parent in a better way. “The strength of the nation lies in the homes of it’s people.” Abraham Lincoln
I watched this show every week it was different from most shows. It was real and had great acting. I do not understand why they would cancel this show. There are tv shows that stay on longer and are just terrible this was a great show and they should have a season 2
I was hoping for a second season. It was good to see a show with some spunk, for a lack of better words. The cast is amazing! After performing the play ‘Spring Awakening’, my only question would be where do you go from there and what would the story line focus on if it wasn’t the play? Yes, there were back stories, but possibly viewers were questioning ‘where do we go from here?’ I truly enjoyed the series and have to say it came across as a limited series such as those usually shown during the summer to fill in… Read more »
Many others have already expressed my thoughts about the quality and value of this show, so I doubt I could add anything worthwhile. I will say that I have been dismayed for all too many years over the cancellation of good programs, while cops, lawyers, doctors and super heroes dominate network schedules. The loss of “Rise” has finally tipped the scales for me. I am no longer willing to give new network shows a chance. They seem to forget that use of the air waves was originally granted to them as a privilege, not a right, and that it carries… Read more »
Sad to see this one cancelled. This show was well written and the cast of actors portrayed honest story lines. My husband and I looked forward to this show every week. The arts getting cut in schools and now on the airwaves.
I have to agree with the other reviewers. SO SAD to see a great sho w cancelled. It is “real” and awesome and depicts the life of teens so well. Anyone who has raised a child or just loves this age group is likely thoroughly disappointed as I am. For that matter, anyone who is past the high school years can relate to this show. NBC, so very disappointed in you. Maybe some other network will pick it up. I LOVE THIS SHOW and I’m in my mid 50’s
It’s been a long time since I last watched a tv show with such spirit, such good music and production… The main theme is art and its powerfulness but that doesn’t even begin to describe the subjects this show explores! There are characters’ storylines that deal with divorce, repressed homosexuality, single-parent families, teenage pregnancy, confusion about the future and so many more issues that could, for a lot of teenagers and young adults, be their whole life’s problems. This show brings all those issues to light, using theater as a mean, through which people find themselves. It sends the message… Read more »
This was superb, honest & needed. Shame on you, NBC for not honoring The possibilities of music, education of what is really facing our young people. I amber you will continue violence, action and thrillers. This show had this, too, but was “for real!”
I think this is one of the best new series of the year. We loved the show, the cast, story line, hooked on the first episode. I am really upset NBC is caving to pressure, and for what reason??? It is quality program, tastefully deals with sensitive topics. Seriously! There is so much trash Tv out there, and NBC can’t see the difference. This show demonstrates tolerance and understanding, growth understanding and acceptance. If NBC can’t see it , I hope there is a channel or cable station that does, and will pick it up. I will be watching to… Read more »
I loved this show. I cried during the last episode. To show teachers and some parents who actually put the kids first to try to give them something better to hold onto was beautiful. No one was perfect, but together they overcame so many odds. A shame a show that doesn’t put anyone down but instead tried to “rise” them up should be cancelled ☹️ I agree with the other like minded comments too.
So sorry to hear that this show is cancelled. My entire family loved it and we could enjoy it together. There are so many things on TV that highlight violence. This show was a breath of fresh air. Loved the music as well. I agree that NBC should reconsider.
Once again, I am reminded why I’m not a huge fan of television. A decent wholesome show about real life cancelled…and no Season 2. For shame! Guess there wasn’t enough sex, violence and foul language for today’s TV fans.
The best show on NBC gets cancelled? What a shame! NBC should be embarrassed that they cancelled this amazing show.
I totally agree
There is no logical reason to cancel this amazing show
Of course, another great show gets cancelled. If it’s not about zombies or violence you want to cancel. Please reconsider. There needs to be more shows like this dealing with real issues for young adults.
