Recently, we reported that TNT had cancelled Rizzoli & Isles. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, TNT chief Kevin Reilly discussed why he’s ending the popular procedural.
Rizzoli & Isles is currently in the middle of its sixth season and will end after a short seventh season this summer.
Speaking the Hollywood Reporter at the TCA winter press tour, Reilly said he pulled the plug on Rizzoli & Isles because the series has run its course:
If I came in and said, year two of Rizzoli & Isles, we’re pulling the plug on it, I would have probably gotten some [feedback]. They have not said no to me on anything and I don’t think they would have said no, but I think they would have gone like, ‘Really?! You want to do that?’ And, honestly, that would have been a stupid move. I’ve got a show that people love, that’s performed really well, why would I do that? Coming to the end of a seven-year run, it’s an easier decision. Everybody involved, from producers to talent, are like, ‘It’s been a good run. We’re going to be one of a couple cable shows that has made it to that 100-plus [episode] number. There have been very few cable shows that have made that many episodes. So let’s go out when we’re strong and not limp.'”
For years, Rizzoli & Isles has been one of TNT’s flagship series, bringing in good ratings and an average of around four million viewers per episode in season six so far. The series’ cancellation seems to be part of Reilly’s larger revamping of both TNT and TBS as networks with acclaimed original material.
Rizzoli & Isles is just the latest dumpee for TNT. In December, three of the network’s dramas were cancelled—Legends, Public Morals, and Agent X.
What do you think? Are you a fan of Rizzoli & Isles? Do you think it’s time the series end?
I think this is horrible. One of those few shows left that I so enjoyed. I just don’t know what else to say but shame on you TNT.
We are disappointed it was cancelled. It’s one of a few without all the language and nudity. The drama, stories and characters always fantastic. Just another reason to cancel satellite TV
Totally bummed about this series ending. One of my top 5 favorite TV series.
Well isn’t this an ignorant decision. R&I is a good show and could have continued with good ratings, but another “new guy” wants to change the course of TNT and TBS. Good luck with that. Won’t be watching either station for a loooong time!
I loved this show and tried not to miss it. Don’t let it go. You can keep it running with the new FBI storyline.
Wow no I do not think you should cancel so many possibilities dump everyone except Rizzoli & Isles and let’s take it to the FBI after all they can wiggle their way into all kind of cases you have a good thing run with it don’t cancel it.
One of the best shows on tv. They take great shows off and leave junk like lmpastor and many other shows on. I don’t think it’s run it’s course is a very good excuse (ie: NCIS & Law & Order)!
A wonderfully acted and superbly written show is being taken off the air, while reality shows with no entertainment value blossom and thrive. Go figure. Bring this show back!!!!!!!!!!! The time for removing it will be when people don’t watch it anymore.
Don’t cancel that’s one of the best shows I watch
It a shame good acting, great story lines. A series with humor and rare vulgarity , less sexual portrayal and nice language. Something I ca actually watch my older grandchildren . A rare commodity in film and TV series these days!! That’s a know I’m not a Mormon yet I am from Utah. Good luck with the whole Cast in. Their future, find something you’ll again enjoy
We will miss your superiority in acting!
Bring back Rizzoli and Isles it was so good
why are they canceling rizzoli and isles its my favorite shw i ever watched why why why do you got to cancel the show please don’t
What an idiot Kevin Reilly is cancelling R & I. Best show since The Closer and Major Crimes. Let another TV production company pick it up if TNT is sooooo stupid to not proceed with this gr8 show. Some people r unbelievable stupid to be in charge of TNT
One of the very few shows I watch. It is still a very strong show. I am going to miss it and wish you would reconsider or at least do a spin off in some way as in Major Crimes which is one of the others in still watch.
Maybe one of the much more successful tv execs from another network will see what kind of a great following this show has and add it to their lineup
