Sorry, music fans. It’s officially the end of the road. As suspected last month, Roadies has been cancelled and won’t be back for a second season. While Showtime doesn’t rely on ratings like commercial channels do, this series failed to catch on with a large enough audience to warrant another season.
Created by Cameron Crowe, the Roadies comedy TV series gives an insider’s look at the reckless, romantic, funny and often poignant lives of a committed group of the backstage workers. They’re touring the United States with a successful arena-level rock band. The cast includes Luke Wilson, Carla Gugino, Imogen Poots, Rafe Spall, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Peter Cambor, Colson Baker, and Ron White.
The last episode of Roadies’ 10 installment run aired on August 28th. Today, Crowe took to his blog to talk about the series and to thank the cast, crew, and fans for their support.
The Last Load-Out
Thanks to Showtime and J.J. Abrams for the opportunity to make the one and only season of “Roadies.” My mind is still spinning from the giddy highs of working with this epic cast and crew. Though we could tell a thousand more stories, this run ends with a complete ten-hour tale of music and love. Like a song that slips under your skin, or a lyric that keeps speaking to you, we hope the spell of “Roadies” lingers. It was life-changing experience for all of us.
So much appreciation goes out to the sensational actors and crew who lived and breathed these stories and characters with their whole hearts. We became a family, our own music-loving troupe. Thanks also to the musicians who lived so comfortably in the world of acting. And thanks to all at Bad Robot, and Winnie Holzman, great collaborators all. Big thanks to our fans for watching and cheering us on. We’ll see you soon with a new project… and many of the same actors, I’m sure. Here’s a little glimpse of the last night of filming. This is what every day felt like.
Love,
Cameron CroweSpecial Thanks to our directors and magic-makers like (get ready for some names!)… Irving Azoff, David Nevins, Robin Gurney, Gary Levine, Gail Levin, Thomas Yatzko, Kathy Lingg, “Mighty” Clay Griffith, Kelly Curtis, Ben “Socks” Stephenson, Peter Roth, Joel Schwartz, Tom Schnaidt, Mike DeGrazzio, David Bilow, Elliott Eisman, Neal Preston, Jon Kasdan, Gavin “Hai” Kleintop, Greg Mariotti, Andy Fischer, Cara McKeown, Joel Sinensky, David Spade(!), Peter Schindler, Len Goldstein, Katie McGrath, Tom “100%” Mackay, Michele Anthony, Eric “We Gave Up European Dates with Neil Young!” Johnson, and of course huge thanks to the real bright-light Roadie who loaned us her name and her indominable spirit – Kellianne Murphy.
What do you think? Did you like the Roadies TV show? Why do you think that it didn’t catch on with a larger audience?
I just watched the season on Netflix.
I loved it. Very disappointed that it’s the end of this series. I think all the actors were great, usually there’s a character I don’t like and I loved them all.
Just like Carnivale & Firefly – best shows ever canceled prematurely. Meanwhile the common slop is fed to the viewing public with a giant ladle.
One of the best shows Showtime has sponsored. Everyone had something to love in ‘Roadies’. Be it the music, stories, poignant tales and struggles to survive
Great show, bring it back!
They need to bring back Roadies.
Just watched this jewel of a series for the third time .. i simply cannot understand why this wonderful show did nit run at least three seasons .
I can only hope and pray that somecwhere , some one sometime may revive , re imagine or continue this brilliant concept
This is such a pity. Its now 2020 and Ive just watched the series on Amazon Prime. It had such life. Such depth. Such humanity. And that final shot of Rafe Spall banging on the venue stage door, ready to sacrifice all for his new found life and love seemed to be a direct indication of more to come, an end of season ‘cliffhanger’. I’m very disappointed to read this page.
Season 1 is on TUBI which is free.
I was waiting for such a long time for Season 2 and believe Roadies would have been a hit series, if only given the chance to catch on with viewers. Very disappointed that Showtime once again showed no vision.
Bring it back! First series that had a great stoyline. Give it a chance to catch on.
I really enjoyed this series being a roadie for many different shows music mostly and now airshows. The music aspect of everything is always hyped up of course but truly this fit alongside of a good series in my opinion.I irkes me that whoever decide’s to cancel shows like this must be a royal stick in the mud that doesnt know nothing about what American’s will like or not..
I just finished binge-watching the series and think it was great. I was really looking forward to a second season. I hadn’t heard of the series until seeing the first episode on a flight over the weekend which prompted the binge. I think the reason it didn’t catch on may have been that it wasn’t promoted widely enough and possibly not in the right ways to let the public know what it was really about. I hope this is not the last word on a season 2 for such an entertaining show. Hopefully Showtime will have a change-of-heart or another… Read more »
Phil made the show, remembering a lot of rock history took me back to my youth and going to history making concerts. It could have gotten better in the second season with some more famous musicians making it great for music lovers. Sad to hear it won’t be back
It was a great show! Refreshing. Great characters. I will tell you why it didn’t catch on: because all shows these days need violence and some sort of dystopia to keep mainstream America interested. Bummed out…… I was really looking forward to season two.
Awesome series. Loved it. Why did it not catch on? possibly seen as a niche market.. a series for rock fan/music fans rather than the populace as a whole. which is a great shame as the stories and characters were great. loved it
