ABC Family has decided to pass on ordering a second season of its freshman sitcom, Ruby & the Rockits.
In Ruby & the Rockits, former teen icon Patrick Gallagher (Patrick Cassidy) has been living quietly with his wife (Katie A. Keane) and their two sons, teenage Jordan (Austin Butler) and sarcastic preteen Ben (Kurt Doss).
Things change when Patrick’s former band-mate brother, David (David Cassidy), shows up with David’s previously unknown teenage daughter, Ruby (Alexa Vega). David doesn’t want to give up his show-biz life and leans on his brother to help raise his daughter, who’s a rising star on her own.
The show debuted on July 21st to 1.6 million viewers and 654,000 in the 18-49 demographic, making Ruby the second best sitcom launch in the network’s history. It even built out of the audience of fellow freshman comedy 10 Things I Hate About You.

Unfortunately, those numbers didn’t hold up and the sitcom lost steam in the following weeks. While the network has renewed 10 Things for another 10 episodes, ABC Family has decided to dump Ruby after one short season.
The final episode is scheduled to air on Tuesday, September 22nd. In the episode, titled “Smells like Teen Drama,” Jordan and Ruby compete for the attention of the same girl. Privileged’s Lucy Hale guest stars as Ruby’s best friend and Jordan’s new girlfriend. Meanwhile, Ben is being bullied at school. David and Patrick want him to fight back while his mother has a very different point of view.

I am very disappointed with ABC Family. “Ruby and the Rockits” was the first new show I have seen in a long time where I could actually sit with my 7, 12 and 14 year old and watch a program we could all enjoy. The TV programs today are aimed at an older audience, shows like this one are a dime a dozen. It’s wonderful that ABC Family wants to kill good Family shows. They have a hit on their hands that could rival Hannah Montana if nurtured properly, but instead they are ready to throw in the towel too soon. The franchise potential is astounding, the stories are very funny and family oriented, the vocals from Alexa Vega are amazing, and the chemistry between her dad, and her uncle’s family are wonderfully cheery while sometimes off beat. Big mistake!! I’m 45 years old and grew up with the Partridge Family. David Cassidy was my idol. ABC Family needs to keep this fun and fresh sitcom in their lineup!
God, what is WRONG with all the good shows being calcelled?!?!?!?!?! At some point, all of my favorite shows are always cancelled, and I’m freakin SICK of it! ABC Family has made one of the biggest mistakes of their lives by cancelling Ruby and the Rockits. Its practically the only show I watch on this channel, and by far the best out of the others. I am very dissapointed in ABC. This was a fun show. The only one I watch on ABC family. I am a big Cassidy family fan and enjoyed watching the show each week.
I agree that this show should be shopped around to another network.

I enjoyed the show for what it was. I’m sure if the season continued the actors would come out on their own. I think Patrick’s character was beginning to be more relaxed and not so stiff same with his wife’s character. David’s character was a little annoying – too much narcissism can be a bit too much for a 20 minute show. Adding a little tlc may have made him more lovable. I hope they find another network…it is a good family show. ABC made the wrong decision. Should have given it another season and then make the decision then.
I watched the very first episode whenit appeared in july my 9 year old enjoyed the show we watched it every week even when we did not make it home in time to see I recorded the episodes except the very last one that air 9/22/09. how can you see episodes that you missed are you going to air those only. Now if you want to cancel a show try the jonas brothers now that is stupid.
You can help save the show by signing the petition at twitter and commenting at the forums at ABC Family. Every voice counts. I don’t think they realize how much of a following this show really has, though the ratings had really hit the roof. A few scheduling conflicts hurt the ratings, but that’s to be expected at times. The shows were getting better! People were commenting all over the internet how they were discovering this funny new show.
Here’s a positive affirmation that speaks from the many fans, baby-boomers who could relate to the free-spirited, quirky family that struggle lovingly to integrate a new member of the family into their own. This show was gaining ground with the younger demographic also and had enough controversy to make it interesting to tune-into each episode. The talent amongst the family members predicted even more hysterically funny and brilliant episodes. ABC Family has made a bad mistake to cancel Ruby And The Rockit’s. I think the cast and producers should find another TV or Cable Channel to carry Ruby And The Rockits and keep this show going. I love this show.

It’s cute. Tonight (the last episode) was my first time watching it. Usually I’d keep flipping the channels, but it caught my attention and kept watching. Too bad it’s canceled. Give it another chance!
