Syfy has confirmed that there won’t be a third season for Stargate Universe. The science fiction series has been cancelled after two seasons and 40 episodes.
The first half of season two finished airing on November 30th. The second 10 episodes are expected to air in the Spring of 2011. Unless the cable channel comes up with a replacement, this will mark the first time since 2002 that a Stargate series hasn’t aired on Syfy (previously known as the Sci-Fi Channel).
Stargate Universe follows a diverse exploration team who is unable to return to Earth after evacuating to a Ancient spaceship that’s headed to a distant part of the universe. The cast includes Robert Carlyle, Louis Ferreira, Brian J. Smith, Elyse Levesque, David Blue, Alaina Huffman, Jamil Walker Smith, and Ming-Na.
Here’s the official statement from Syfy…
Syfy will end its original action-adventure series Stargate Universe when the show returns with the final 10 episodes of its second season in the Spring of 2011. The Stargate franchise — consisting of Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe — has aired on Syfy since 2002.
Syfy has a slate of new sci-fi/fantasy scripted projects lined up for 2011 including the series premiere of Being Human on January 17, the recently green lit one-hour drama series Alphas and the much anticipated Battlestar Galactica prequel pilot movie, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. Warehouse 13, Eureka and Haven will also return with new seasons next year.
It’s unclear if the final 10 episodes of Stargate Universe will give closure to the series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that SGU is coming to an end? Do you think the ongoing storylines will be resolved?
That really stinks. This was one of my favorite shows.. in fact, this is the show that got me watching other shows on syfy.. will they do this to my other shows? Maybe, I’ll think twice about watching other syfy tv shows if they cancel this.
I’ve already given up NBC shows because of them doing the same thing.
SGU is the most interesting show on television today. I could understand why SG-1 ended after 10 seasons, but SGU has the ability to make it that far as well. SYFY is throwing away a loyal fan-base with both hands.
Well, once again, as soon as I get into a series and look forward to new episodes, the powers that be decide to cancel it. It’s no wonder I have been turned off of TV the last 5 years. For every 5 series I begin to watch, maybe 1 will survive (very frustrating). I too found SGU to be new and different and intense. Really, what is there to watch for Sci Fi? Nothing! This series definitely would have done better if it would have broadened the audience (made it more available to the general audience) and not just on… Read more »
Glad Stargate Universe is gone. Hated the main character and his dirty teeth. Just watched the last five episodes of Caprica. Now that was great. Wish they would continue up to the Battlestar G beginning. how did the Cylons take over and what happens to Lacy and the whole cast. I was a big fan of BC from the original series. Big mistake to stop with the middle missing.
I have never commented on any subject on-line, but this time I must. SGU has a gritty/ believable /true -to-life story line that the other SyFy programs cannot match. Whoever owns the SyFy Channel must be using a Consulting Firm from Outer Tajikistan to do their market research! I agree with the earlier commenter who said that this is a Science Fiction Channel – so what are they going to replace SGU with another Vampire/Wolfman Teenybopper series? Or more ridiculous wrestling crap? Idiots!
I thought SGU took the frachise in a good direction. It really is a shame that syfy is determined to undermine everything that made the SciFi channel great. The SG franchise was the main standby and a favorite of many. Same deal with BSG-way to ruin a possibly great and lucrative series. Whoever is running the show now really does’nt understand the audience. I mean wrestling for science fiction fans….seriously? Why don’t the powers that be actually give the programing job to someone who actually understands the audience? You want ratings the start catering to those of us who made… Read more »
SGU is a great show, I don’t understand with all the infernal dross they cave SYFY movie originals that when they finally have something that has people tune into their station they cancel it. I personally love this show. I think it’s better than all the other only because it actually a seemingly possible twist to the franchise. How can people expect the same o’l same o’l. Finally a show that kade me want more after every episode. I only ever watched the SG’s if nothing else was on. I actually anticipated this show. Please don’t cancel. At least let… Read more »
Im almost ready to quit watching TV. This will just accelerate my decision.
This is a big disappointment. SGU is really quite interesting with good in-depth character development. There’s a dearth of good scifi shows these days. They should re-think their decision and promote this show more.
This show should have been called Stargate Galactica, because it was a incredibly lame attempt to clone BG. They should have cancelled this show after season 1. There was not one likeable character and The Gate was the only thing that remotely reminded us that this was part of the Stargate franchise. Unfortunately they have forever ruined the Stargate franchise with SGU. Loyal SG1 and SGA fans like me were so distraught at this horrible little show that many of us haven’t even tuned in the Sci-Fi channel since before they changed their name. No one – not even the… Read more »
I can’t believe they would cancel Stargate Universe. I love this series. The sets were amazing, the acting was very good, and character development was good. It’s a Sci-Fi channel…what are they going to replace it with – more vampire series?
**** those dumb asses. Bring back Stargate U, idiots.
Well I liked the realistic approach that SG-U had, I was a big fan of SG-I. The show was just too down, and if you did not see the first show, you would not understand about the stones. The show was kind of hard to understand, for a new comer watching the show. The show also was too realistic, making war statements, that was kind of the down fall, of Star Trek Enterprise. The fact that the show could not, survive on its own characters and had to rely on cameos from the original SG-I show, was kind of sad.… Read more »
