Although CMT cancelled its Sun Records TV show after just one season, the song may continue. The Memphis Flyer reports producers are pitching season two to Amazon and The CW. A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, Jonah Lees, Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
In Sun Records, Sam Phillips (Murray), shepherds young musicians Johnny Cash (Fonteyne), Elvis Presley (Milligan), Carl Perkins (Dustin Ingram) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Christian Lees). These up-and-coming white musicians combine hillbilly country music, with the ’50s R&B sound of African-American artists like Muddy Waters, B.B. King (Castro Coleman), Fats Domino, and Ike Turner (Holliday).
According to the report, Memphis Film and Television Commission boss Linn Sitler said Kevin Kane, president of the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, paid the rent on the show’s soundstage here for another month, to give the producers time to pitch the show to other outlets. Here’s more:
CMT already paid for scripts and outlines for season two of the show, Sitler said. So, they are “ready to go” for a second season. She said she has her “fingers crossed” for the meetings with the other networks, though she said “it may be a long shot.”
About $9 million is already set aside in the state budget for season two and season three of “Sun Records.” However, if the show is not renewed, that money all goes back to Nashville in a pot set aside for other film and television projects across the state.
Sun Records hails from Thinkfactory Media. Leslie Greif executive produced the first season with showrunner Gil Grant. Barry Berg served as co-executive producer and Herb Nanas and Colin Escott served as producers. The series is based on the book, Million Dollar Quartet, written by Floyd Mutrux and Escott. CMT confirmed the series cancellation, back in May.
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV show? Would you follow it to The CW or Amazon for a second season?
I still talk about this show today- Wish there was a network that would pick it back up! Television is a way to escape for some people. We don’t need EVERY show to incorporate current events to be entertaining.
Loved the first season. I look forward to seeing season 2 and beyond on Amazon. !
Yes please we want season 2 of sun records. Its gritty and true life. Fans of sun all over the world want to see this.
It was a great show about real American history which is why it won’t fly on CW. You can rewrite the history so CW won’t want it since they can’t cram gay storylines in there ti entertain only themselves. Hopefully Amazon would pick it up. Such a shame to waste.
100% agree the show is fantastic. Wasn’t aware of the reason.
Please keep Sun Records alive, it’s tge best show in years
I enjoyed it very much it was just a time thing . I think it was just on to late .
We need more Sun Records
PLEASE, find another home for this series. The reason it was concealed was not because of poor quality. I think one of the reasons was that it was not promoted properly. Thank you
I would really like to see a second season of Sun Records. I have watched the 1st season 4 times already and still enjoy it very much. I have lived in Memphis for a short time now and I’m very intrigued with the music history of Memphis and how it all started. Now I know that there is a lot more to cover with the other seasons that I would follow any station to watch them. Please hear my plead Amazon and CW.
I love the show!! I would watch another season.
I would love to see a second and third season of Sun Records I absolutely loved it amazing actors great story lines it had me hooked from episode 1 so please bring back Sun Records thank you.
Sun Records is one of the best series I’ve ever watched. Was very upset when I found out it was canceled so if another station picks it up or a streamer I will follow it wherever. CMT made a stupid choice when they canceled this show
YES!! I am currently watching the 8 episodes. I discovered it while watching Walk The Line, the Johnny Cash movie. I LOVE it. Perhaps it’s because I grew up in the 50’s loving these singers and it’s great seeing their history in the beginning of their lives. If more people knew about it, it would be a hit. There are too many rock ‘n rollers out there for this to not be a success.
YES!!! I just finished all 8 episodes and want to see MORE!!!!!! PLEASE bring it back somewhere!!!!!
Please show more episodes I would sure tune in it’s the best series I have watched in a while
