Today, ABC airs the final episode of their daytime series, The Chew. Last month, the network announced that the cooking-themed talk show had been cancelled after more than 1,400 episodes. Will you miss it? Was this the right decision?
Launching in September 2011, The Chew replaced the All My Children soap opera after its 41 years on the network. A talk show that incorporates cooking and lifestyle-related segments, the series was initially hosted by Mario Batali, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly, Daphne Oz, and Michael Symon. Oz departed the show after six seasons and Batali left following sexual misconduct allegations in December 2017.
ABC decided to cancel The Chew in order to expand their Good Morning America series to three hours. NBC’s Today show has had a third hour (with various titles) since October 2000. The current incarnation is Megyn Kelly Today.
While the third hour of Today typically followed the regular program’s two-hour broadcast, hour three of Good Morning America will air separately, in the afternoon. The new hour of GMA is expected to be taped and not presented live, as the regular program is. ABC is making this move as Today has been taking the lead in various demographics in the morning ratings race.
If ABC had wanted to expand GMA to three hours, couldn’t they have replaced either The View or Live with Kelley and Ryan? That was unlikely to happen since both perform better in the ratings than The Chew. In particular, The View has been growing its audience and has been seeing its best ratings since the 2014-15 season (a rarity in today’s landscape). Meanwhile, The Chew has been in last place, ranking 13th out of 13 daytime series.
While ABC may have high hopes for a third hour of GMA, they no doubt have an uphill battle ahead. Daytime audiences often don’t like change and some viewers still hold a grudge against The Chew for replacing All My Children. Time will tell if the new hour of GMA will fare any better than The Chew did.

Definitely Not. A third hour of GMA … Is too much. Like Megan Kelly is too much. These hosts make mega $$$ and that is bothersome … Especially, when I think of the View and the vitriol these puffed-up, self-righteous women portray.
SoooooSad!!! Clinton, Carla, & Michael have gone above & beyond carrying this show. They are the CHEW! They are the best Team of TV Hosts ever!!! The chemistry between the 3 of them is so Refreshing to see & they are the Real Deal as Down to Earth People, Honest, Funny, Great Teachers, Extremely Talented, Open-Minded & Very Charismatic. All of the people behind the scenes are AWESOME as well. I guess The Chew was too much of a family oriented show for the ABC viewers who are more into sensationalism such as sexual harassment, ME TOO movement, etc. Just shows the mentality of your viewers and those at ABC who make the decisions to cancel an entertaining show such as The Chew! The cast of The View are empty headed frustrated females who obviously need to get a life and for Megyn Kelly, gotta give her credit for convincing ABC that she could get the job done which obviously failed. NO I will Not watch GMA or possibly other ABC Shows. Very disappointed. Most fun daytime show along with learning much about cooking. Better than many cooking shows. Loved the hosts interractions. Thank you to Carla, Michael and Clinton. Tired of many of the reality shows that are like soap operas. ABC has lost my support!

I will not watch the third hour of GMA! I want the Chew back. We need a wonderful show that actually you learn from and makes you happy instead of crap with commercials!
The Chew is such a refreshing show. Funny, informative and just makes you feel good. Should never have been cancelled. I would cancel the View before the Chew
Noooooooo…absolutely love this show. I record it every day and watch when I can. Most entertaining and informative recipes. The comraderie is great and will miss so much. Why don’t they take off the stupid reality shows and leave the great shows alone?????
This is a huge mistake, 3 hours of GMA? I barely make it through the first hour! I am so going to miss Clinton, Michael and Carla!!
Never watched GMA. In Los Angeles, at noon, The Chew was it in my home. Cancelling The Chew for a third hour of GMA? Bad move ABC.

No. The Chew should NOT have been cancelled. We have more than enough shows like “Today” and GMA and I seldom watch them now. I loved the interaction of the crew. I liked Daphne and didn’t want her to leave, but she did. In the last couple of seasons Mario seemed to be bored with the show and the rest of the crew. I’m sorry that he left under the circumstances.
