While a second season on ABC seems like a real long shot, ABC hasn’t officially cancelled The Gates (unlike say, My Generation). One of the show’s stars however has been told that there won’t be a second season.
The Gates follows a Chicago police detective (Frank Grillo) who moves his family to a gated suburban community to become the neighborhood’s security chief. They soon discover that their new neighbors aren’t as normal as they appear to be. The large cast includes Andrea Powell, Rhona Mitra, Marisol Nichols, Luke Mably, Travis Caldwell, Skyler Samuels, Chandra West, Colton Haynes, Janina Gavankar, Justin Miles, Victoria Gabrielle Platt, James Preston, Georgia Cole, Johnny Messner, Brett Cullen, Shannon Lucio, Devyn A. Tyler, McKaley Miller, and Louis Herthum.
Ratings expectations are lower in the summer months but the suburban supernatural series averaged only a 0.9 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and just 2.95 million total viewers. Though the ABC show has a devoted audience, there really just aren’t enough of them for a network series.
After weeks without news of The Gates’ status, Grillo recently tweeted, “I’m told from a friend at ABC that The Gates are closing. No season 2 Still unofficial but that’s the latest.”
After a big negative fan response, Haynes tweeted him, writing, “That caused an uproar haha. It is still not decided if #thegates is coming back or not. There is no official news as of now. Soon”
Grillo wrote back, “wow. Certainly did. Just passed on what we got yesterday. As I said. ‘Unofficial’ but as I see ABC’s ratings tank who knows.”
In any cast, it looks like two of the show’s executive producers have already moved on. Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo (who also co-created the series) have been hired by ABC, along with Greg Poirier, to develop a new summer series for the network. It looks like it’ll be a drama that revolves around a female spy.
What do you think? Is The Gates cancelled or will the series miraculously return for season two? If not, would you like to see the story continue in another form — books, comics, or something else?

I’m so disgusted by the Always Be Cancelling network. They get rid of a phenomenal show like The Gates that is well written, perfectly done, and has a growing fan base, but they continue with season two hundred, ninety-five of the bachelor!?? How exactly does that make sense?! It would be better to get rid of that crappy brothers & sisters mess and replace it with The Gates as a Fall show! Desperate Housewives is actually a good lead-in for it. The thing to do is move this to a network that cares about investing in superb shows! However, it… Read more »
“Craig”, my husband and I love The Gates. Never missed it. We also watch Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy, but hate all the reality shows. We sure hope they don’t cancel The Gates. It was different and we were anxious to see what would happen now that they added a zombie into the mix. I think the Nielson Ratings should be revised. No one ever asked what we watch, so how can there be a true counting of who’s watching what?
Well all I can say is it is cancelled….that is it for me and ABC. I will NEVER watch another show, news cast or anything else that ABC is affiliated with. So sick of putting my time into ABC show just to have them cancelled just as they are getting good.
Sorry ABC but, you are pushing your fans to far!
you know what ABC.. im never watching your network again. you all dont know how to market your shows. The gates was a brilliant tv show. and now you have cancelled it. i hope the shut down ABC. it would be nice if they just get rid of the whole network all together. not that it matters to you but im never watching your network again.
I really hope they bring it back for another season, however if not I agree with a previous comment of giving it to another station. Maybe the WB would take it as they have run many seasons of Supernatural and plenty of that is pretty far out there. I enjoy The Gates for the possible truth in it, I mean the characters and plots are way more believable than most vampire movies or shows. It just feels so much more realistic that it’s almost believable. The vamps don’t have creepy faces or the usual weaknesses. I like it as much… Read more »
“Jaded” may be on to something with the speculation that repeating each episode several times over the course of the week before the next episode airs might be a factor in the success of some of the cable networks’ series like “Burn Notice” or “White Collar”. Then again, when it comes to supernatural shows, the CW seems to know what it’s doing with “Supernatural” and “The Vampire Diaries.” Premature cancellation has been a hallmark of ABC for decades. When viewers protested the cancellation of “Battlestar Galactica” in 1979/80, all they got was a form letter thanking them for their interest.… Read more »
It was amazing to get one season out of ABC. The fact is that ABC attracts a certain audience that likes to watch shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, and reality show competitions. That kind of audience will not watch what I consider more interesting shows like Happy Town or The Gates.
Since it does look like “The Gates” will be canceled then again, I was an idiot who invested time yet again, into a show that took more than a summer (and it wasn’t even a whole summer) to build ratings. I was lucky that “Burn Notice” and “Royal Pains” were popular. I’m lucky that “Mad Men” is popular. Maybe cable networks invest more effort in their shows. Maybe the secret is to have these shows repeat several times before the new episode. Maybe the real secret is just to avoid ABC like the plague. They’re not called the “Already Been… Read more »
I totally agree, I hate how ABC cancels shows after 1 season! THIS IS CRAZY! I LOVED THE GATES!!!! DON’T BE IDIOTS ABC!!! GIVE IT A CHANCE! Yeah maybe ABC should stick with no suspense, because they don’t know how to make good shows.
What a shame if The Gates does not return A well-acted & well written show At least give it a chance I know a few people who had no idea what it was & I got them interested in it Some of the stuff on TV is so awful -how come that junk doesn’t get cancelled Phooey ABC
We are sick of ABC, cutting good shows just because of ratings. I agree that maybe rating should be a consideration, but not the ultimate reason. All The Gates needed was for some of the top execs to properly market the show. I’m tired of getting involved in a series only to have it cancelled. Happy Town had a good story line also, only to be cancelled. Whats up with ABC thinking? Is it greed ? I’m sick of them feeding us all these cheap reality show. Get back to good reputable shows.
I agree with everyone who criticizes ABC for quickly cancelling shows rather than market them correctly. The Gates was well written with a stellar cast and kept you in suspense each episode. sadly, these are the ingredients that spell disaster for ABC. Maybe they should stick with non-dramatic shows like Dancing with the (Laughable)Stars, One more home makeover show, or perhaps Teen Bachelor.
I’m sooo sick of watching shows on ABC only to have them canceled after 1 season!!! That is why they are my least favorite network. They’re lucky they have The Middle, Modern Family & Cougar Town.
I was looking forward to the second season, when I read about ,,The Gates” beeing cancelled. I really want a second season! I think ,if the Gates would come back, the ratings will improve ,because its not summer anymore and the chances of new people watching are really good. The actors are all very good, and the story Line is interesting, they deserve a second season /chance!
So ABC Network-please do something for your viewers and BRING THE GATES BACK!
ABC does not know how to market creative shows like this one. They never even picked up the ball with Happy Town, so dropping the ball was not an option. They also never gave last fall’s Eastwick a chance either. I just wish that ABC would put their cancelled shows for sale to give them a chance to live on. Other networks, there is always that small chance they go to another station. If a show gets the axe on ABC, it’s over for good, because they have never let their shows go to another station. I hope that they… Read more »
