While a second season on ABC seems like a real long shot, ABC hasn’t officially cancelled The Gates (unlike say, My Generation). One of the show’s stars however has been told that there won’t be a second season.
The Gates follows a Chicago police detective (Frank Grillo) who moves his family to a gated suburban community to become the neighborhood’s security chief. They soon discover that their new neighbors aren’t as normal as they appear to be. The large cast includes Andrea Powell, Rhona Mitra, Marisol Nichols, Luke Mably, Travis Caldwell, Skyler Samuels, Chandra West, Colton Haynes, Janina Gavankar, Justin Miles, Victoria Gabrielle Platt, James Preston, Georgia Cole, Johnny Messner, Brett Cullen, Shannon Lucio, Devyn A. Tyler, McKaley Miller, and Louis Herthum.
Ratings expectations are lower in the summer months but the suburban supernatural series averaged only a 0.9 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and just 2.95 million total viewers. Though the ABC show has a devoted audience, there really just aren’t enough of them for a network series.
After weeks without news of The Gates’ status, Grillo recently tweeted, “I’m told from a friend at ABC that The Gates are closing. No season 2 Still unofficial but that’s the latest.”
After a big negative fan response, Haynes tweeted him, writing, “That caused an uproar haha. It is still not decided if #thegates is coming back or not. There is no official news as of now. Soon”
Grillo wrote back, “wow. Certainly did. Just passed on what we got yesterday. As I said. ‘Unofficial’ but as I see ABC’s ratings tank who knows.”
In any cast, it looks like two of the show’s executive producers have already moved on. Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo (who also co-created the series) have been hired by ABC, along with Greg Poirier, to develop a new summer series for the network. It looks like it’ll be a drama that revolves around a female spy.
What do you think? Is The Gates cancelled or will the series miraculously return for season two? If not, would you like to see the story continue in another form — books, comics, or something else?

My husband and I loved the series and made sure to record it when we couldn’t watch it. I also love that ABC has full episodes to watch when you miss one and that it’s free unlike Shoetime etc. Awesome cast, great story line, and of course the last episode left us all wondering what is coming next! A book series would not intrique me as I fell in love with the cast and want to see more of them. We need season 2 on ABC!!!
dont cancel the gates. loved it! no more women cop or spy shows. gates was original and would love to see more
I love this show. I hope they do not cancel this. I have watched all the episodes. This is a great story. Please give us an ending. The last show left us hanging, wanting more. Sincerely Cathy Owens
We would really love to see The Gates return for a 2nd season; however, the network has no staying power/commitment to series development. ABC, like its broadcast counterparts, need immediate gratification for a commetment… much like todays societal marriages! The series would probably do much better & have better staying power if it was on one of the edgier cable channels. The Gates got better with each episode with good character development emerging right up to the finale! The only character that got very little development was Sarah. she could have been an integral part of the children’s characters &… Read more »
This show is soo good. Was left wanting more after finale. Sundays are just boring now. Really! How many CSI’s or Law and Orders do we nee? Keep this show going. Cant wait to buy it when it comes out!
another thing i seen the moves new moon, those were stuped, lame . the gates had it all.
please bring it back .loved it the best one on t.v. moon light was another good one , it s off . the best vampire showes. i now everone that watched loved it. also it burns me that they, the stares never seen them in peopel or intervews on t.v. dont let it go .
I love this show!! Dont cancel it!! I’m getting very tired of everytime I get into a show …it’s cancelled…not okay!!
Daughter and I loved the show- it was our thing to have that time together each Sunday night but the time slot was waaaay too late for success- BRING IT BACK- Very classy
Please bring the show back. Love it. The actors are fabulous.
I loved this show, and so did my 4 year old daughter!! I really wanted thi sshow to do well, but I do agree that putting it on at 10p.m. on a Sunday night didn’t set them up for success. Still keeping my fingers crossed that this will be renewed. As for yet another spy show, I am sick of those. This was something unique. Even though there have been other vampire shows, this one had everything.
Ya know this sucks really bad…ya find a show that has a really good plot, and great actors, and then ABC wants to cancel it….Now they are thinking about promoting a show revolved around a female spy…I mean come on how many Covert Affairs do we need on the tube…ABC needs not even waste their time on that show, cause USA has them beat wth Covert Affairs…. I mean Don’t we have enough shows on TV about spies and cops, and FBI agents….I loved the suspense and the fact that it was set in real life suburban america and how… Read more »
Bring it back! My younger sisters (17 & 22) got me (33) hooked on this show a couple episodes in- I hate that most good shows aren’t given a chance to gain an audience. And what about the time slot? 10pm, Sunday? Were they trying to screw the show right from the start? What are they expecting? It’s on really late for people like me who have to get up at 5am to start the morning commute- but obviously most people aren’t willing to be groggy Monday morning! so sad.
I love the show. It’s one of the most original shows I have seen in a long time. It did come on at the same time as HBO’s “True Blood” so I think a lot of people that would watch that sort of thing were already tuned into HBO. “The Gates” is by far much better & done with more class.

Even though the series was a “slow start”, I came to like it. I think the networks need to give some of these shows a chance. They should allow the series to return for a 2nd season and see how it does.
They did the same with Moonlight, and they should have given that series a chance also.
