To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

Let’s list the top shows in America, shall we? Maybe we’ll find a pattern. House – a doctor who treats everyone like garbage, but women love him. Gossip Girl – superficial people who treat each other like garbage, but they’re still up for the naughty stuff. Hellcats – cheerleaders who treat each other like garbage, steal each other’s boyfriends, but they look really good doing it. Need I go on? Does America really need TV writers anymore when you can just park some hot girl and hot guy together and have them engage in some kind of superficial love-hate relationship?… Read more »
Can’t say I’m surprised at all. It was good, so Fox cancels it. If they cancel Lie to me, then I’m not watching Fox anymore. That’s a promise.
This is just terrible. The Good Guys was a show everyone could watch and get a kick out of. My husband and I taped the episodes and watched them multiple times. It’s sad this show lost out on a great future.
The ‘stache will always hold a place in my heart. We need more shows like this full of light hearted comedy.
I’m pissed.
I am very sad to see The Good Guys leave, but I understand Fox’s reasons. It was fun while it lasted.
Dan Stark Forever!
“What do I think?” I think this is typical of today’s television offerings. Insipid crap get carried on and on, while clever, funny, entertaining programs like TGG gets canceled. Part is the fault of Fox not being willing to buck the ratings, promote more, and revive the show (remember that little show nobody liked called Star Trek?).
I sincerely hope the cable networks will recognize the potential of this family-friendly fun program, but I’m not holding my breath. If the only season comes out on DVD I’ll most definitely buy it.
That sucks….
Fox never gave this show a chance. It was sentenced to do time on Friday nights pretty much from day 1. That was the plan all along. Blows my mind. Why even pay to put a show on TV if you’re not going to do whatever you can to help it thrive? In almost every aspect of life and business, America has forgotten everything. The things it used to stand for it now does not. The Good Guys was a show that knew it was corny and a relic of the 1980s. It wasn’t overtly risque or featured young model… Read more »
This was an excellent, truly funny show. I really think it would have been a huge success if it would have hired on USA or TNT. So sorry to see it good. Long Live Dan Starks!
Yes, I am beyond upset. This show was gaining interest. So many comments on the web about how people were discovering this show in later weeks, and getting “hooked!” I’d love if there could be a way to see what the “real numbers” are – not just Nielsen.
Here’s to hoping Bradley Whitford (the producer) will find another home for it. USA, perhaps?
On the flip side, if not, then he can shave the moustache, lose that extra weight he put on for the role, and go on to the NEXT great role!
Absolutely disheartened that this show is cancelled. It had great writing, great/unique story lines and fantastic acting, without relying too much on sleaze and sex (like so many current-day crap shows). Whitford was exceptional….bring it back in a survivable time slot, not “death Friday”.
thanks God … these shows now in days are so bad … waste of DVR space
loved the show, great sense of humor!
I will miss this show–it was so much fun!
You know what? **** Fox I am sick of them canceling every ******* show of theirs I get into. Unless it’s sports or American ******* Idol it gets canceled. This network just sucks when it comes to knowing what the fans want. Maybe if you ****tards gave it a better night or another season to develop a bigger fan base it would reward you! I mean hell you kept Til Death on the air for 4 years you’re telling me you can’t give this funny ass show another season? Signed, **** you Fox!!
Sorry, to hear that, but that is to be expected from anything Fox produces. This is just typical Fox killing good shows. Now they are moving Fringe to the death slot so that won’t be around long either.
