NBC is trying another Bear Grylls reality show. The Island will run for six episodes this summer. The peacock network previously partnered with Grylls for two summer shows — Get Out Alive With Bear Grylls and Running Wild With Bear Grylls — that ran one season each.
Here are some details about the new show:
NBC AND BEAR GRYLLS CONDUCT THE ULTIMATE TEST TO DISCOVER WHETHER MODERN MAN STILL HAS WHAT IT TAKES TO SURVIVE IN SIX-EPISODE ADVENTURE SERIES “THE ISLAND”
14 Ordinary American Men Will Embark on a Groundbreaking Social Experiment Into Whether Modern Man Has Lost Those Hard-Earned Pioneer Skills and Attitudes Needed to Survive
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — March 25, 2015 — NBC has ordered six episodes of the thrilling new man vs. nature adventure series “The Island.”
In the hourlong “The Island,” internationally acclaimed adventurer and survivalist Bear Grylls gives the modern American man the ultimate challenge. Can a man of today’s world survive on a deserted island without the luxuries, or even the basics, of contemporary everyday life?
“This experiment reveals, in a shocking way, whether modern man, when pushed, can still summon all the resolve, ingenuity and strength that traditionally made a man’s man — or whether our society’s cushioning has meant we have lost those hard-earned skills of our ancestors,” said Grylls. “This is the raw, unfiltered and uncensored story of 14 men, as told exclusively by them.”
“The Island,” based on the hit Shine TV-produced Channel 4 U.K. series of the same name, doesn’t include any of the usual reality show trappings. There are no prizes. No eliminations. No winner. No camera teams. The entire series is filmed by the men themselves. The six episodes will show what happens when 14 American men are abandoned on a deserted island with only the clothes on their backs, minimal survival tools and committed to filming every moment themselves.
These 21st-century American men, who are accustomed to a roof over their head, restaurants and the benefits of technology, are stripped of all the modern conveniences and are catapulted back to their roots. They must hunt for food, source water, erect shelter, build community and try to survive using only their strength, determination and know-how. All of the men, including a stay-at-home dad, trauma surgeon, firefighter and criminal defense attorney, have something to prove to themselves and each other. This experiment takes them to the very edge of human endurance. They will test their physical, mental and emotional limits and fight for their very existence.
“The Island” is produced by Endemol Shine North America and Bear Grylls Ventures. The original U.K. series was produced by Shine TV. Bear Grylls, Eden Gaha, Michael Brooks, Holly Wofford and Delbert Shoopman serve as executive producers of the new series.
What do you think? Do you plan to watch this new Bear Grylls show?
I thought the show was very good
I would love to take on the challenge – it would be a very fun , hard , challenge
If I had the chance to be a part I would jump at the opportunity
Would like to see more shows like this
Just watched the last episode. With the exception of Buck, Jim and Dakota, I’ve never seen a sorrier group of human beings. These men could barely survive a sunburn or hangnail. Not to mention playing to the camera; “Love you man!” And “Love you Bro!” After a few days they were in love with each other! Lol…Children of the eighties and nineties blew through crystal clear with their platitudes and cliches. The first part of the series told us in advance when a guy left the island, but first in true “Diva” fashion he screeches “Don’t let MAH babies see… Read more »
I watch the ” island” and it makes wonder how modern mankind could bear up with such a burden
I can hounestly say I really enjoy watching this show it keeps me on the edge of my seat sota speak and if I knew how to get a hold of some of the producers of this show I would love to take a whak at this stuff I’ve always kinda liked the outdoors and have learned a lot in my tome would love to give it a shot just once I think I could Gove it a really good shot……
I have been watching. I hope these men pull it together soon.. Seems time after 4 days still no shelter built, gathering of food etc. Spending alot of time talking and wasting individual talents/ideas instead of pulling together. 2 guys already gone from heat. Now that water has been found maybe they will plan ahead in case of STORMS…HELLO. I like Bear and show. Good luck. Hope the men surprise us all.. Oh yeah… The first man off island was a total tool…kinda saw that one coming. Can’t act that way in a harsh environment like that and expect to… Read more »
Better yet, strand all the reality show producers on one island and never go back to get them. That would be real viewing unlike these scripted shows which are a waste of time.
I watched the UK version last year. I thought it was very well done. Real drama ensued rather than the petty dramas of other survival shows. In the end the men bonded and survived. They all said they had been changed for the better.
Awesome news, I’m so happy. Can’t wait to start watching Bear.
You bet I’m gonna watch this show … Am I gonna like it, aye there’s the rub … No, for real I’ll watch the show and I really think I’ll like it. As long as the focus stays on the survival aspect of the story. I don’t want another “soap opera” show with a bunch of spoiled upper income brats worried about what the “other guy” is doing. My opinion, thanks …
I’m going to watch just to see if they all start whining like little boys… with no wives or mommies along to clean up after them! You just know there’ll be that one guy who thinks he knows EVERYTHING! Should be fun.
