NBC recently unveiled a new mini-series on Thursday nights — The Slap. How’s the show been performing? Is it a big enough success that the network will want to make a second season somehow or, is it a bomb that should be pulled off the schedule?
On The Slap TV show, a birthday celebration comes to an abrupt halt when a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. It’s a small action that ends up deeply affecting all involved. The cast for the mini-series includes Peter Sarsgaard, Thandie Newton, Uma Thurman, Makenzie Leigh, Zachary Quinto, Dylan Schombing, Thomas Sadoski, Melissa George, Brian Cox, Lucas Hedges, Maria Tucci, Marin Ireland, and Penn Badgley.
The eight-episode series debuted on February 12th to a very disappointing 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 5.13 million viewers. Things got even worse in week two with the numbers falling more than 20%. Last week, the ratings dropped again, falling to a disastrous 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demo with 3.67 million viewers.
It’s clear that The Slap is a big “miss” for NBC and, more importantly, it’s not giving The Blacklist any lead-in support in its new Thursdays at 9pm timeslot.
After tonight’s installment, the network will have four episodes left. While NBC will no doubt let viewers see the remaining episodes, it seems highly unlikely that they’ll leave it in its Thursday night timeslot much longer. A Saturday night burn-off or online release appears to be the most likely scenario.
3/6 update: NBC has cancelled Allegiance and shifted The Slap to the Thursdays at 10pm timeslot for the remainder of its four week run.
4/3 update: NBC has confirmed that The Slap has ended with eight episodes.
But, what do you think? Do you like The Slap? Do you think the network should keep airing it or pull the series prematurely? Why do you think it hasn’t caught on?
I have watched The Slap from the first episode. I love it. It is so true to life. I work with kids and ALOT of parents think there kids are angels. And this whole “you shouldn’t discipline your child” “they will be scared for life if you give them a swat on the butt”. I spanked my children when it was warranted and they turned out to be very normal ladies and gentlemen. My daughter now has a six month old and is going to make sure she knows her pleases and thank-yous and how not to interrupt adults when… Read more »
I think that NBC should leave the show where it is. The only reason I would keep watching is because it’s only a limited run. If I thought it was going to be more that 8 episodes I would not keep watching. I think the reason it hasn’t caught on is because none of the characters are very likeable or sympathetic. The main character who is cheating on his wife with their babysitter, Anthony Quinto’s character that actually dealt the slap, is a complete angry a$$h*l#, and the worst of all, the mother of the boy. She is still breast… Read more »
I like the show. I am interested to see how it ends. It really shows how you re-act or respond effects more then just yourself. Like a snowball rolling down hill.
If it is so dismal – why does another article say this: “The Slap” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 3.4 million viewers overall from 8-9 p.m. ET) grew +14% or 0.1 of a rating point week to week in 18-49 (0.8 vs. 0.7) to match its highest rating since the show’s Feb. 12 premiere (1.1). Last night’s telecast also grew +5% week to week in total viewers (3.867 million vs. 3.673 million), +10% in adults 25-54 (1.1 vs. 1.0) and +33% in men 25-54 (0.8 vs. 0.6). · “The Slap” will increase significantly in L+3 — The prior week’s “Slap” grew by… Read more »
That would be an NBC press release. Even their spin on the ratings make them sound awful.
I actually enjoy it .
I look forward to watching The Slap each week. As many have said, the actors are wonderful. The storyline is very intertwined which keeps things interesting. Family and friends dynamics at its Best .K eep it going!!!
I love the show!!!
I watched the Slap last night. I too feel the characters are being well developed. The older set is very believable. So loyal to the family. Then you have the middle generation not as loyal to each other (have been Americanized). Feeling more connection to an outsider~ so I’m interested on how it will play out..Will watch next week..
I am really interested in it!Never miss it and even rewatch it.Am really anxious about how it turns out!The problem is not the show itself it is the fact that the 2 opposite shows are well established.TBBT and GA have huge followings! It would be difficult if not impossible to beat or equal their ratings.Don’t throw away a great drama for that reason!Inormally watch Big Bang but now am rewatching it on demand!
The writers should be slapped for putting this drudgery on. The spoiled rotten brat and inattentive parents ruined the whole premise for me. This is what happens when parents let their kids run amok without supervision.
Theres more to the story than that before you trash a show you should watch it.
It’s interesting how many people aren’t willing to call Harry on his anger management. The boy has control problems originating in his parents, but Harry is an adult who can’t control himself either.
Sandy, I did watch it, that’s why I am trashing it.
My opinion.
I like Harry and his new lawyer. Lousy accents. If you’re going to make it “ethnic”, at least use ethnic people. Week two was terrible, but I assume it was for some “background” for the series. I think one season is enough for this conflagration. Why the bad viewership? Three words: “Big Bang Theory”. We all don’t have recordable devices to watch one show and record the other.
I watch almost no network television but will often give something a chance to see what it is like. I was disappointed by both “The Blacklist” and “Stalker.” This is a beautiful show. The characters are deep, the acting stellar and the story riveting. It is a pity that it isn’t catching on – I do not know anyone who is watching it and have no one to talk to about it (my husband doesn’t like dramas). Sadly, I am not surprised. I would hope that NBC would at least let us see the remaining episodes on TV (not the… Read more »
Its a great series. The characters are really interesting, and cover emotions and thoughts not explored often. Family dynamics can be very difficult, and this show shows it well, in a more interesting and thought provoking way. The first episode was the most intriguing. I want more, much more.
I missed the premiere but I just watched it on On Demand last night and I very very much liked it, the story line, the cast. Here’s hoping for its continuation.
I am enjoying this show. The characters are very interesting, Thursday night has a lot of good shows to watch and I watch and record them all. So; I am all set to continue watching the SLAP any day, any time.
I look forward to watching The Slap each week. As many have said, the actors are wonderful. The storyline is very intertwined which keeps things interesting. Family and friends dynamics at its Best .K eep it going!!!
