There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

Love the UNIT, love the actors. Fun and entertaining to watch. As a white man I found it satisfying to see Haysbert portraying Jonas Blane as an in-charge, no-nonsense, competent black man without a “poor-me” attitude. His character is a superb role model any male white or black could strive to emulate. CBS bring it back with a weeknight time slot.
My husband and I can not believe that such a GREAT series as the UNIT is going to be canceled. There are such brainless shows on televison today, that to have the UNIT to look forward to was wonderful, exciting, encouraging!! The actors were the best, the wives were courageous. Please do something to continue it. All our friends feel the same way, we love the Unit!!! Keep it Please!!! CBS was a network I could depend upon giving my family great items to enjoy! Without the UNIT, you offer nothing equal!! BRING IT BACK PLEASE!!!!
I cant beleive CBS canceled The Unit. What a dis-service to those who served and are serving in the Military. Bet it is replaced by another mind-numbing reality show. Besides NCIS there is nothing on local programing to watch anymore. Great job CBS Way to go!
Who the hell told them that average viewership is around the age of 55 !!. I am 27 and I am non-American and I love this show very much. Most of the people I know who love watching the show are waaaay under 30! So I do not know where the hell did CBS come up with this shady statistic. And for god’s sake bring it back. This show is a decent one that teaches many values and traditions that cater to any viewer regardless of his or her background or ethnicity. I would rather see the Unit come back… Read more »
Can’t believe CBS cancelled The Unit. Guess they will put in on another reality show. No more of those for me. I have had it with them. You had a show with substance to it. Guess it was to good for CBS. Hopefully, one of the smarter stations will pick it up. Heck, they cancelled one of the longest running and best soaps, Guiding Light, on tv. Maybe, CBS needs to do the same as some larger corporations are doing, change upper management!
My family of four faithfully followed the Uint. We enjoyed the sitting down and watching NCIS, then the Unit. Eith the Unit gone, doubt we will tune into any CBS show. Hope the network well in the future, but you lost one family of viewers
ARE YOU F**KING CRAZY!!!! Why did you cancel the best show ever! If you kept it in a decent time slot and not preempt it every other week maybe just maybe we wouldn’t be having this conversation. How about get your head out of where the sun don’t shine and get the show back on!!!!!!
Semper fi
myself and my 2 daughters have watched the unit since it started. it is very disappointing that the show has been dicontinued . have a heart and reconsider.its one of a kind
This is a HUGE Mistake and a TREMENDOUS Disappointment! I have a group that got together every week to watch The UNIT…. I may go all cable and never watch CBS again…. BRING THE UNIT BACK, DAMMIT!
CBS YOU SUCK!!!!
The unit should not be cancelled it is one of the best shows on TV withgreat characters, acting and story lines. I looked forward to Sunday evening and watching the unit..I won’t be watching CBS anymore!!!!
i hate to see the unit cancelled. i have purchased every year of the unit plus watch them on tv!! what a shame!!
Never been one to follow a show week to week, season to season. This is a shame. Most everything else on TV is reality trash, reality trash, or just plain trash.
The unit IS the best show on TV. Most of my friends also watch it and we are all waaaaay younger than 55. If you are someone that loves intense drama, action, and real material that keeps you on the edge of your seat….this is it! I wont be watching TV anymore if this show gets cancelled….CBS must stand for Completely Blithering Stupid…..
**** you CBS
