ABC won’t be making its official announcement until tomorrow but the axe has already fallen for midseason’s The Unusuals.
The dramady revolves around a dysfunctional but effective group of New York City cops. The series features the talents of Amber Tamblyn, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Joshua Close, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Kai Lennox, Terry Kinney, Adam Goldberg, Ryan O’Nan, Ian Kahn, Kat Foster, Heather Burns, Robert Funaro, and George Aloi.
The ABC show debuted on April 8th to a disappointing 6.83 million viewers and a 2.1/6 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers fell to 6.01 million and a 1.8/5. The network tried a different timeslot but the numbers were worse and subsequently fell to a terrible 4.74 million and a 1.4/4.
Though ABC really wanted to find a new cop drama, it became pretty clear that this one wasn’t going to be it. The network has opted to cancel The Unusuals rather than order a second year.
Their official schedule will be announced tomorrow but show creator Noah Hawley has already been informed that the show is dead.
He twittered, “Friends, just heard The Unusuals will not be back for a second season. Thanks for all your amazing support.” He later wrote, “It’s a tough loss.”
There are four episodes left in season one and ABC will begin airing them next week, on May 27th.

I am really sad this show will not be continuing. I loved the characters, their stories and the interestingly odd crimes they had to solve. It was very different then any othe crime drama and I really feel it would have caught on given some time. Keeping it going through the summer when all other series are just showing repeats would have been a great idea to grab new viewers. I wish ABC would reconsider this decision.
The good shows always take a while to build a following. This show offered a different way to look at the world, one where the cops were just as flawed as the world they work in. The cast is great together and the show is interesting. ABC should rethink their decision.
lst Eli Stone, Now the Unusuals. Who is running ABC? USA and TNT are going to overtake these big stations who are being ran by nitwits. They give their shows a chance.
Morons, this is exactly why abc is so pathetic You keep garbage like grey’s and the like. That dull repetitious crap that you can recite the dialogue before it is spoken. When you finally air something decent, you use a flawed rating system to axe it. Keep listening to the little weasels that tell what is good and keep your crap, I hope you drown in it. I am back to blocking abc.
Bad bad bad decision. This is (was) a great show. Great cast! Very different approach to a police department. Well written and well acted; of course ABC drops it instead of giving people enough time to find it and support it. What is the criteria for being the head of programming at ABC, you had to have been an ex-GM or AIG exec or what?
I agree with Matthew. Life on Mars was great I was excited to find a good new show. Now the same crap is happening to the Unusuals. It’s bull…
This is just such a terrible loss. The only show this year that my wife really loved and it’s gone. I can’t believe how stupid these networks are now days. This show was well acted, great plots, super-funny characters, just great. Breath of fresh air and it’s gone. So stupid. ABC should burn in hell.
I really liked this show, especially the characters. Will be sad to see it go.
It’s the best show period.
ABC sucks, this is another show I’ve really enjoyed on their station and they are canceling. Right now there isn’t much to watch and all that is on is game shows and reality and I’m not a fan of either. I love Moonlight, then the replacement for that one, and now The Unusuals. Who are these idiots from which they get their viewing information from, I bet they all love the reality crap shows and don’t watch much of anything else.
I love the Unusuals. My 28 year-old daughter loves the show. I’ve only watched two shows on ABC in years, the Unusuals and Castle. I was surprised to see these shows on ABC. I would have expected them on TNT or USA. Now, I wish they had been. The Unusuals would not have been canceled on either of those networks.
I don’t understand why you are canceling this show, we love it!!
yes, just like other networks abc screwed the fans of the unusuals,it was a breath of fresh air compared to all the csi’s&law&orders, never gave “unusuals” a chance if your banking on a show to work you at least have to give it 2 seasons, everything worked on that show, especially the season finaly, the porn case was hilarious, sorry abc not bringing “the unusuals” back means you dropped the ball(like nbc) dumbasses!
This is a great show with a great cast. When do the viewers get a say on what we get to keep and what goes. I’d be happy to tell you what reality shows you could dump. Why don’t we start with ALL of them. Does no one in Hollywood use their brains anymore and that is why you ask us to watch mindless reality tv?
Don’t blame ABC. Blame the people who refuse to tune in because they are watching the endless supply of mind numbing reality shows that clog the air waves. It’s probably cheaper and easier to buy the rights to a British reality show and to convince us that it’s what we want than to stand behind something that is intelligent and entertaining. Then again maybe we should blame the networks. They are the kings of the supersized society that we live in.
