After big drops in the ratings, it looked like So You Think You Can Dance might be cancelled last year. FOX renewed the program but the focus has shifted to young dancers — So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation. Will this change bring in a bigger audience or will the ratings drop lower? Will it be renewed for a 14th season? Stay tuned.
Hosted by Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance is a competition that pits dancers (now ages 8-13) of various backgrounds against one another to become “America’s Favorite Dancer.” They are partnered with “all-star” dancers from past season. Nigel Lythgoe, Paula Abdul, and Jason Derulo return as regular judges. They are joined by 13-year-old judge Maddie Ziegler (Dance Moms).
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
9/13 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The 12th season of So You Think You Can Dance averaged a 0.94 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.24 million total viewers.
Note: Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you still like the So You Think You Can Dance TV show? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a 14th season? Is the “Next Generation” format working?
Watched every season, but not one episode this season. I just thought this was a bad idea.
Please cancel this horrible version of the show. It is not impressive it is like kiddie porn. To think of the all stars dancing with these really young children its stomach turning, and it’s also ruied the opportunity of people who have trained their whole lives are ready to start their career. Please bring back the old format of 18 and up or 17 it up even.
Wow…the ratings keep dropping every week. It’s time to pull the plug, this season is awful and boring.
They should go back to the original format. Season 12 wasn’t good because they changed the format to Street vs. Stage. I’ve been a loyal fan since season 1 and after watching the first episode of the Next Generation, I refuse to keep watching. Their ratings started going downhill when they started making changes to the judge panel and then the show itself. The loyal fans loved it for 11 straight seasons!! Why change it after that long??
Season 12 was a dissapointment, but still ok. I’ve watched a tiny bit of a couple shows this year. It’s just awful. They’re ratings have been much worse these last 2 years, perhaps they should not have changed things so radically season 12 and they’d still have one of the top shows of the summer.
This is very sad format this, while it’s good to inspire our youth into dance, and not sitting behind technology, this year I’ve tried it and quit all at the same time, so if your back next year I give it another try
This used to be my favorite show. No longer. I tried watching the new format and it is even worse than I thought it would be. Get rid of Paula and Jason and bring back Mary. They really jumped the shark.
My sent amines exactly Kathleen! She brought a certain positive energy to the show which has been lacking since she left! This used to be my favorite show, but now I’d rather watch The Bachelorette!!!!
Not even bothering to watch this year – not interested in watching little kids dance. Bring back the older dancers, ditch Paula and bring back the guest judges like Christina Applegate and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. There was a reason I watched this show year after year – every season until this one.
I love those judges
They drove it to the edge of the cliff last year. Now, they pushed it off. Bring back the format of the early years. Judges, choreographers, and early format. Or, it’s lights out for Nigel.
Get rid of that ridiculous kid format, Paula Abdul, and Jason. No stage vs street. Just go back to the way it was and bring BACK Mary Murphy.
Nope. Not interested in the kids nor the street vs. stage format. Don’t think it will survive even with the addition of the new judge. Maybe..but who knows? IF you make it, hopefully next summer will be the original format it began with. Otherwise “it was nice while it lasted SYTYCD” (minus street vs stage and now the kids).
This format change does nothing to fix the issues that led to declining ratings. Cute won’t cut it for long with an audience that craves top talent like the prior years have given. Love this show but no interest in watching talented but not seasoned kids.
Season 12’s rating were bad because the format for last year was bad. This year’s approach is the wrong solution and will likely lead to the show’s cancellation. They needed to go back to the format in season 11.
I also predict this will get the show cancelled. Very disappointed as it was one of my favourite shows, but I have no desire to watch kids! I could watch Dance Moms for that!
and I predict this will get them cancel!
This show is a very big loser……… It will be off the air next season!
Perhaps the “next” SYTYCD can be about dancing animals.
This WAS an amazing show. As everyone has stated already, the judges WERE on target, amazing, nurturing and entertaining, the camaraderie sublime. Among the BAD reasons already mentioned to do this with kids is that kids are still developing. With the original format we were presented with dancers that were already very well accomplished and each week pushed the professional dance movement forward and set a new bar weekly. This new format will and is failing rapidly. Jason does nothing for the shows credibility either.
